The Romans Series Part 20: The Everlasting Love of God
from The Simple Gospel Church · host The Simple Gospel Church
Romans 8:31-37 After speaking on important and significant themes – freedom from condemnation; redemption; sonship and adoption; predestination and foreknowledge – Paul ends this chapter with the most important subject of all: God’s Love. We will examine these verses by looking at the different categories of questions He asks and answers here: God Is On Our Side (31) The “us” here – and in this entire teaching – refers to the group of people that Paul has spoken about from verses 18-30. It is not a generalist assurance of backing for all of humanity but a rather specific one for those who are: in the process of suffering, eagerly waiting for adoption (the redemption of the body) and relying on the help of the Holy Spirit. God Will Never Hold Anything Back from Us (32) The “all” here is a comprehensive one that is similar to that of verse 28. It should not be interpreted as God being committed to fulfilling all our wishes, whims and desires. It is a divine commitment to make available to these people everything that they need to live a life that is pleasing to God. The Devil’s Primary Weapons Have Been Taken Away (33-34) When dealing with God and man, the devil has one primary weapon of operation for each party. He uses DECEPTION to get men to stray away from God and uses ACCUSATION to state his case against man before God. Both of these have been defeated by Christ on the cross. No More Separation (35-39) The love of God through Christ is eternally constant. It does not change irrespective of circumstances and it transcends the universe itself. Verse 35 runs down a list of circumstances that the believer will be exposed to. Verses 36-39 act as a summary of the universe itself.
