The Situation in Myanmar | News
from Seeking Refuge
On February 1, 2021, Myanmar's military seized control of the government in a coup. Since this happened, there has been massive civil unrest and military violence in response to the protests. Over 200 anti-coup protestors have died so far. The Burmese military has been the force behind the ongoing ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya, Karen, and other minority ethnic groups in the country, so this coup has horrible implications for the persecuted minorities in Myanmar on top of the risk of dictatorship and violence that the military coup poses to the country as a whole. Since we recorded this story yesterday, there have already been more deaths, including a 7 year-old girl who was killed in her home: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-56501871 We encourage you to keep following this story on your own, and we will try to keep you updated on the major developments.
