The Stanford Prison Experiment

from Blue Murder Club

This week Carrie chooses our subject and it is one of the most famous examples of a science experiment going wrong. In the 1970's a Psychology professor at California's Stanford University spent one summer carrying out an experiment into the study of authority. 20 volunteers were paid to play the parts of prisoners and guards and were randomly separated into these two roles. Within a couple of days the experiment had gone very dark as the 'guards' began to take punishments too far and 'prisoners' began to feel the experience was all too real. All in the space of six days the experiment was shut down and as the results began to leak out into the public domain, quickly became infamous.  Contact us and support the show:For one time support Buy Me a Coffee:Blue Murder ClubLink to all things Blue Murder Club including all of the Socials - We look forward to hearing what you think about usbluemurderclub | Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok | LinktreeEvents:London 2026 | The Ultimate True Crime Event | CrimeCon UK - Get a tasty discount using our code BLUE and Crimecon even do a payment plan to spread the cost!
