But at Horeb, God was not in the powerful wind, the earthquake, or the fire. Then the noise died down—and Elijah encountered the gentle whisper.Yesterday, fire. Today, a whisper.God cannot be reduced to the way He moved before.Samuel heard God calling his name, yet initially did not recognize who was speaking. His story reveals an important truth:Hearing is not always the same as recognizing.Jesus in Gethsemane shows us another dimension of discernment. He honestly expressed His desire—“take this cup from Me”—yet surrendered that desire to the Father:“Not My will, but Yours be done.”Sometimes quietness is the place where our desires finally become surrendered enough for us to hear something different from what we wanted God to say.Habakkuk adds another powerful lesson. After bringing his questions before God, he takes his position and waits to hear what God will say.Perhaps one of the disciplines of quietness is learning not to answer our own prayers before God answers them.Not every urgent feeling is direction.Not every desire is revelation.Not every coincidence is confirmation.And spiritual maturity may sometimes make us more careful—not quicker—to say, “God told me.”Scripture matters. Wisdom matters. Godly counsel matters. Humility matters.
