Pain, disappointment, anger, desire, past experiences, and the opinions of others can all become so loud that recognizing God’s direction becomes difficult.In Conversation VII of The Theology of Quietness, Berry Mwamba explores the relationship between quietness, discernment, and recognizing the voice of God.Elijah experienced God answering by fire on Mount Carmel. But at Horeb, God was not in the powerful wind, the earthquake, or the fire. Then the noise died down—and Elijah encountered the gentle whisper.Yesterday, fire. Today, a whisper.God cannot be reduced to the way He moved before.Samuel heard God calling his name, yet initially did not recognize who was speaking. His story reveals an important truth:Hearing is not always the same as recognizing.Jesus in Gethsemane shows us another dimension of discernment. He honestly expressed His desire—“take this cup from Me”—yet surrendered that desire to the Father:“Not My will, but Yours be done.”Sometimes quietness is the place where our desires finally become surrendered enough for us to hear something different from what we wanted God to say.Habakkuk adds another powerful lesson. After bringing his questions before God, he takes his position and waits to hear what God will say.Perhaps one of the disciplines of quietness is learning not to answer our own prayers before God answers them.Not every urgent feeling is direction.Not every desire is revelation.Not every coincidence is confirmation.And spiritual maturity may sometimes make us more careful—not quicker—to say, “God told me.”Scripture matters. Wisdom matters. Godly counsel matters. Humility matters. THE THEOLOGY OF QUIETNESS — CONVERSATION V: WHEN HEAVEN SEEMS SILENTWhat do you do when you pray, wait, listen—and God seems silent?In this conversation, Berry Mwamba explores the mystery of God’s hidden movement and the truth that quietness does not mean inactivity.Between the cross and the resurrection, there was Saturday.Friday was loud. Sunday was victorious. But Saturday looked like nothing was happening.Jesus had been crucified. His body was placed in a tomb. A stone covered the entrance. His enemies even secured the tomb with guards.From the visible realm, it looked finished.But God’s plan had not stopped.Scripture declares that God raised Jesus from the dead. The risen Christ later proclaimed that He holds the keys of Death and Hades, and Philippians declares that God exalted Him and gave Him the name above every name.The guards could secure the tomb.They could not stop resurrection.And that truth speaks directly to the quiet seasons of our own lives.Sometimes, pressure increases before deliverance becomes visible.Doubt becomes louder.Anxiety grows.Loneliness deepens.Another obstacle appears.Another “guard” seems to stand in front of the promise.But increased pressure does not mean God has lost control.Joseph experienced years of quietness in prison before suddenly standing before Pharaoh.Paul and Silas worshiped at midnight while the doors were still closed and the chains were still attached—before suddenly, the prison shook.Jesus remained silent before His accusers, showing that quietness can be restraint, confidence, and strength.Isaiah declares:“In quietness and in trust shall be your strength.”Maybe you are living in a Saturday season—somewhere between pain and restoration, prayer and answer, promise and manifestation.Stay faithful.Stay prayerful.Stay obedient.Stay quietly confident.Because the tomb may be quiet…but God is still working.The prison may be quiet…but God is still working.The guards may still be standing…but no guard can stop resurrection.Saturday does not mean Sunday is not coming.

Elijah discovered that God was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper. Jesus Himself repeatedly withdrew from the crowds into solitary places to pray.Perhaps separation is not always rejection.Perhaps some quiet seasons are invitations.In this conversation, Berry Mwamba explores The Invitation to the Quiet Place—the spiritual purpose of separation, stillness, and intimacy with God.The quiet place can expose what noise has been hiding.
