The Truth About Porn Addition with Joshua Shea | Kharisma Daily EP 100

from The Kharisma Podcast · host Kharisma M

In this epic and milestone episode 100 of the Kharisma Daily Show, Kharisma delve deep into how porn addiction destroys men’s brains, libido and relationships with Joshua Shea, Pornography Addiction Expert, Author and Certified Betrayal Trauma Coach. Approximately 50% to 99% of men and 30% to 86% of women consume porn. Sex researcher Alvin Cooper has suggested these high rates are due to the "triple-A engine" effect—accessibility, affordability, and anonymity. According to a survey by the Kinsey Institute, 9% of respondents who view porn had tried unsuccessfully to stop. What constitutes a normal amount of porn consumption varies from person to person, making it difficult to define dysfunction. Pornography addiction is not officially recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), but many researchers consider pornography consumption dysfunctional for some people. Other terms suggested include "sexual compulsivity," "hypersexuality," "dysregulated pornography use," "problematic pornography use," and "compulsive sexual behavior disorder." According to scientific understanding, pornography serves as a "supranormal" stimulus, triggering the normal reward mechanisms in our brains at an elevated level, creating a perception of heightened pleasure compared to ordinary arousing stimuli. However, prolonged exposure leads to desensitization, requiring more novel stimuli for the same level of arousal. This often results in a spiral towards more explicit and increased consumption of pornography. In certain cases, men can develop a psychological addiction to porn, adversely affecting their sexual and social lives, and, in rare instances, causing debilitating consequences. This addiction has been associated with anxiety, diminished self-esteem, and a compromised sense of identity for the male addict. Furthermore, it can induce feelings of isolation. The negative impact extends to the female partner, who may experience shame and inadequacy. Beyond individual consequences, porn addiction can strain a relationship, causing sexual issues, eroding trust and safety, fostering a sense of rejection, and fundamentally altering how women perceive their addicted partners, shifting from a "good" to an "inherently bad" view.
