Approximately 50% to 99% of men and 30% to 86% of women consume porn. Sex researcher Alvin Cooper has suggested these high rates are due to the "triple-A engine" effect—accessibility, affordability, and anonymity. According to a survey by the Kinsey Institute, 9% of respondents who view porn had tried unsuccessfully to stop.What constitutes a normal amount of porn consumption varies from person to person, making it difficult to define dysfunction. Pornography addiction is not officially recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), but many researchers consider pornography consumption dysfunctional for some people. Other terms suggested include "sexual compulsivity," "hypersexuality," "dysregulated pornography use," "problematic pornography use," and "compulsive sexual behavior disorder." According to scientific understanding, pornography serves as a "supranormal" stimulus, triggering the normal reward mechanisms in our brains at an elevated level, creating a perception of heightened pleasure compared to ordinary arousing stimuli.
