It was recorded in one take using a lot of fingernail and hammer-ons to illustrate the existence of a guitar solo there. The band liked the part and it was kept. When this song started out its life it had the working title of Sponge, which the band would say in more and more preposterous ways until nobody could remember why they were saying it. It was created at around the same time as another Ug Brothers song, also in the key of Gm, that had the working title of String. When this song was first created, it had completely different words and the vocal melody was what became the second half of the guitar solo. There are several key changes in this song: the verse section is Gm-Bbno3rd-Dm7-Cno3rd, Gm-Bbno3rd-F-C; the chorus is Em-Fmaj7-Am9-Bb(-5); the solo section is Dm-Bb-F-C, Dm-Bb-F-Am-C. Shortly before the words for this song were finalised, Dave went to a party where he met a girl whose name was Grace. Natalie added the word ‘like’ to the line ‘One on one’ although no such simile was intended by the author.
