"The Vulcan Hello"

I wonder if a Vulcan Hello is anything like an Irish Goodbye. Instead of leaving without telling anyone, would it be arriving? You know, for how many people there are that still have never heard of this series, it seems to fit. However, is having your arrival unknown mean that it is unwelcome? If a Star Trek series falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
