Nobody – Episode 4: The Weight We CarryWelcome back to Nobody.I want you to do something with me.Nothing complicated.Just imagine you're standing at the edge of a hiking trail. On the ground beside you is a backpack. It looks normal enough. You put it on.It's heavier than you expected. But you shrug. You start walking. After a mile, your shoulders ache. After five miles, your back hurts. After ten miles, you're exhausted. Then someone asks you a simple question."What's in the backpack?"You stop. You unzip it.Inside are rocks. One rock says Rejection.Another says Shame.Another says Fear.Another says Regret.Another says I'm not enough.Another says If they really knew me, they wouldn't love me.And then you realize something. You've been carrying those rocks for so long......you forgot they weren't part of the backpack.Maybe you've forgotten they aren't part of you.Every one of us is carrying something. Some baggage is obvious. Some is hidden so well that even we don't know it's there. We think we're angry. But underneath the anger......is hurt.We think we're controlling. But underneath the control......is fear.We think we're perfectionists. But underneath perfectionism......is the desperate hope that if we never make a mistake......maybe no one will reject us.Emotions rarely travel alone. They're layers. And if we only deal with the top layer...We never discover what's underneath. When we're kids...We don't decide what goes into the backpack.Other people put things there.A careless comment from a parent.Being picked last.Being laughed at.Being told to "man up."Being told you weren't smart enough.Pretty enough.Athletic enough.Successful enough.Maybe someone walked away.Maybe someone stayed......but made you feel invisible.Children don't have the ability to say..."That isn't true."Children absorb. And those beliefs become stories.Stories become identities.Identities become lives. Here's what's fascinating. Most of us become experts at protecting wounds we've never actually healed.Think about that.Someone hurts us once...And we spend twenty years making sure it never happens again. We avoid vulnerability. We avoid commitment. We avoid difficult conversations. We avoid asking for help. Not because those things are dangerous. But because we're protecting an old scar. The tragedy is...The prison eventually becomes more painful than the original wound.I read something years ago that changed the way I think. It said..."The body keeps the score."That hit me.Because emotions don't simply disappear.Unspoken grief has a way of becoming tension.Chronic stress.Sleepless nights.A short temper.Anxiety.A racing mind.Sometimes our bodies are carrying conversations our mouths never had.Have you ever noticed how one small comment from someone can ruin your entire day?Someone criticizes you.Someone ignores you.Someone questions your work.Objectively...It isn't that big of a deal. But your reaction is enormous. Why?Because they're not touching today's wound. They're touching yesterday's.It's never just about the comment. It's about every comment that came before it.Every rejection.Every disappointment.Every moment you felt unseen.Old pain echoes louder than new pain. One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is this:"If I don't talk about it, it doesn't affect me."But silence isn't healing.Silence is storage. The pain doesn't disappear. It waits.Sometimes for years. Then one day...Someone says the wrong thing.Life takes an unexpected turn.A relationship ends.A job disappears. And suddenly everything we've buried comes rushing to the surface.People call it overreacting.Maybe it isn't.Maybe it's overdue grieving. Here's something I've learned the hard way. There is a difference between carrying pain......and carrying identity.Pain says..."I was hurt."Identity says..."I am broken."Pain says..."Someone rejected me."Identity says..."I am unlovable."
