The Wisdom Journey - Will the Real Disciples Sign Up (Luke 14:25-35)

Share a commentA crowd can look like faith from a distance, but Jesus knows the difference between curiosity and commitment. As we move through Luke 14:25-33, we watch Him stop a moving mob and, in effect, post a warning sign: following Him will cost you comfort, status, and control. If you have ever felt pulled between family expectations, personal ambition, and obedience to Christ, this passage puts the tension into plain words and refuses to soften it.We walk through four clear challenges Jesus gives to anyone who wants the name “disciple.” First, He demands first place, using strong language about “hate” to expose what we prioritize when choices get tight. Then He talks about carrying a cross, not as a poetic metaphor, but as a willingness to accept shame and rejection because our life is no longer our own. We also clarify what this is and is not: not a checklist to earn salvation, but the lived reality of those who truly follow Jesus. To make it practical, Jesus uses two vivid illustrations that sound like everyday wisdom: a builder who counts the cost before starting a tower and a king who measures the odds before going to war. Discipleship is not a rush of emotion; it is a thoughtful, durable decision. We close with His summary call to renounce all, which means our expectations will change as we learn to say goodbye to anything that competes with Christ. If you want biblical teaching on the cost of discipleship, Christian priorities, and what “take up your cross” really means, press play.
