Step into a street in modern Bangkok, Colombo, or Yangon. You might see a digital billboard streaming a dhamma talk, a monk with a smartphone, or a festival merging ancient chants with modern sound systems.Theravada today is anything but static. It is a living tradition, shaped by global movements, national identities, and the everyday choices of millions of people. In countries like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, Theravada forms the religious majority. According to census data from the early twenty-twenties, over ninety percent of Thais, eighty to ninety percent of Burmese and Cambodians, and about two-thirds of Sri Lankans identify as Buddhist, mostly in the Theravada tradition. Monasteries anchor village and urban life, organizing rites of passage, festivals like Vesak, and the rhythms of daily devotion.
