This Week in Tyranny: A $60M Birthday Cage Match, an ICE Homicide Cover-Up, a Wall Through a Park

This week in tyranny: while President Trump marked his 80th birthday with a UFC cage match on the South Lawn of the White House, his administration spent the week documenting, in its own reports, the human cost of its detention machine.The UFC event, billed as part of the country’s 250th-anniversary celebration, drew more than 4,000 guests. The UFC said it covered the cost, but the National Park Service stated in a court filing that taxpayers are out more than $60 million, with seven federal agencies involved. A Trump-family crypto company added a $250,000 bonus pool, and a commercial pilot landing at Reagan National filed a federal safety report over the event’s lighting. The same week, a court ordered the President’s name removed from the Kennedy Center.A Government Accountability Office report on Camp East Montana, the largest immigration detention facility in the country, found that a detainee, Geraldo Lunas Campos, died in a guard restraint ruled a homicide, and that the contractor never provided required use-of-force and death reports, with evidence “missing or destroyed.” The report also documented a lost loaded firearm, a detainee escape, tuberculosis screening by questionnaire, and detainees with diabetes and HIV left without treatment plans. DHS described the facility as “upgrading.”In Pittsburgh, a medical examiner ruled the death of Daphy Michel, a Haitian asylum seeker released by ICE into freezing weather, a homicide, the kind of post-release death ICE recently stopped reporting.
