Un equipo de investigadores británicos y alemanes ha identificado los restos fósiles de un gran bosque húmedo que hace unos 90 millones de años se encontraba situado en el continente antártico, cerca de lo que hoy es el polo sur. Se cree que el nivel de los océanos era entonces unos 170 metros más elevado que el actual, y la temperatura media en los trópicos alcanzaba los 35ºC, cuando hoy solo supera por poco los 18ºC. Mientras estudios anteriores habían determinado que el contenido de CO2 en aquella época era de unas 1.000 partes por millón (ppm), que hay que comparar a las 415 ppm actuales, los autores de este trabajo indican que era aún mas elevada, de unas 1.120 a 1.680 ppm.
