Hace dos siglos, en 1816, el naturalista alemán Lorenz Oken creó el género Panthera para agrupar a todos los félidos con manchas. Un siglo más tarde, en 1916, el zoólogo británico Reginald Innes Pocock revisó la clasificación de este género y, basándose en ciertas características del cráneo, lo redujo a cuatro especies: el tigre (Panthera tigris), el jaguar (Panthera onca), el leopardo (Panthera pardus) y el león (Panthera leo), que ni siquiera tiene manchas, aunque sus cachorros sí las tienen. Análisis genéticos recientes indican que el leopardo de las nieves, antes catalogado como Uncia uncia, también pertenece a este género, por lo que su nombre científico es ahora Panthera uncia. El fósil más antiguo del género Panthera es Panthera principialis, que vivió en Tanzania hace 3,7 millones de años, durante el Plioceno. Más información en https://cienciaes.com
