At the Station of St Balbina on the Aventine, Lent sets before us the widow’s unfailing oil and the martyr’s quiet endurance. In contrast to the pride of the Pharisees, Holy Mother Church calls us to hidden fidelity, sacramental grace, and visible Christian witness.
