St Giles teaches the freedom of the soul that seeks God rather than human applause. Fleeing wealth, reputation and worldly security, he discovered that true holiness is formed in the hidden heart where the law of God is written. His life also reveals the contrast between virtues that humility conceals and sins that repentance must bring into the light. The Twelve Holy Brothers, commemorated with him, embody the same renunciation through martyrdom: both hermit and martyrs proclaim that Christ is worth more than anything this world can offer. As Augustine died during the Vandal siege of Hippo, the earthly city was collapsing around him while he prepared to enter the City of God. St Bernard of Clairvaux became one of the most influential voices of twelfth-century Christendom not through office, wealth, or political power, but through holiness, prayer, intellectual discipline, and freedom from worldly ambition. Drawing upon the Mass In medio Ecclesiae, the homily presents Bernard as monk, reformer, theologian, counsellor of popes, controversialist, and deeply Marian saint, while also acknowledging his limitations and failures. His enduring relevance lies in his insistence that authentic Christian authority flows from conversion: prayer before speech, repentance before correction, contemplation before action, and love of God without measure. The miraculous snow upon the Esquiline Hill prefigures the mystery of the Incarnation: heaven descends, the earth opens, and the Saviour springs forth from the immaculate soil of Mary. The Finding of Saint Stephen teaches that truth may be buried, but it cannot be destroyed. She Knew the Time of Her Visitation: Saint Anne was the faithful mother who recognised Mary as a gift entrusted by God and returned that gift wholly to Him.
