Tomboy Tirade Ep 24: @The Comedy Improv f. Joanna Sio

The Tomboy Tarts are back with another episode of Tomboy Tirade, Asia'a ONLY all-female comedy chat podcast (for now). As you know the Tomboy Tiraders hope to start a trend here in Asia where more girls will step up to the podcast podiums and bare their hearts, souls and vaginas and we have been working hard ourselves attending some comedy shows and improv workshops around town and this week we catch up with our improv master and one of Asia's leading stand-up comics, Joanna Sio. Joanna Sio, runner up at the 2012 HK International Comedy Competition, become the first female comedian to achieve this accolade. She is both a standup and improv comedian and has performed live in the Netherlands, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia and Singapore. An intelligent and witty comedy writer, Joanna will leave you in stitches as she jokes about everything from marriage to what Chinese people eat. Which means free dim sum for our listeners this week as we improv our way through the episode. It's not exactly 'Whose Line Is It Anyway' but we try our best to waddle our way through classic improv exercises like an original Tirade improv creation 'Wait a minute! You Call this the News?!' where we are given a minute to come up with a ridiculous news story from the top of our heads. It is then followed by a quick Q&A with Joanna about the improv scene in Asia and Singapore as well as why improv is better than anti-depressants. :) After that we're back at it again at the improv playground with a game called 'Scenes from the Fedora Hat' where Persis, Raven and Joanna make spontaneous associations with a certain scenario or situation. When that game breaks down, the ladies move onto 'The ABC Game'; an improv favourite where everyone has to throw out a sentence, based on a letter in the alphabet, related to a specific location or scenario. When that goes nowhere, it's time for the last improv exercise, 'Questions Questions....So many questions' wher Joanna and the Tomboy Tarts must get through a specific scenario for a limited time, asking themselves only questions. However, Joanna ends up disappearing into a mysterious portal never to return and Persis and Raven have no choice but to declare the show over with a 'Missing Guest Alert' that involves a very suspicious black cat. Anything can happen in this improv-tastic episode so come on over and give us a listen! We won't bite!
