In this episode, the Tomboy Tarts, Persis and Raven get babysitting advice from Singapore's funniest moms Jasmine Han and Shelly Holly. We find out what is like to survive, and not perfect motherhood from these wine loving ladies and how they get away with writing an "explicit" motherhood book. Rated P for Poop! As ex-Shield agents on the run, Tomboy Tarts Persis and Raven are forced to go undercover as security guards at a pool party. The over-enthusiastic Raven wants to issue a Pool Party violation ticket to Jasmine Han & Shelly Holly until Persis realises that they are the authors of "I am not Perfect, I'm a Mom" book. In between getting babysitting advice and being hit by a slime bomb, first-time authors Jasmine & Shelly talk about how they meet and why they write the book. Over copious amounts of champagne, we discuss about about surviving and not perfecting, motherhood, neurotic mums, challenges of writing an "explicit" motherhood book and poop. Lots and lots of poop. Persis decides that she wants to do a truck getaway with the slime bombs and things literally go to the shit from there. How will these Tirade tomboys get out of this stinky mess? Listen and find out on a grossly funny new episode of the show! IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: 1. GUEST BIOWe find out more about Jasmine Han and Shelly Holly, the two co-authors of the funny and explicit motherhood book, I am not Perfect, I'm a Mom. They share with us how they first met and what motivates them to write this not your typical parenting book. 2. NEWS HIGHLIGHTS - Hollywood's golden couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner annouced their divorce after 10 years of marriage and it's freaking everybody out big time. - In Alaska, residents of Fairbanks reported seeing several terrifying foot-long eel-like fish scattered around town. - Twitter explodes after a woman named Sarah O'Connor accidentally tweets ultimate 'Terminator' reference. 3. I'M NOT PERFECT, I 'M A MOM Modern-day parenting is tough but there's a lot of fun to be had in raising kids too. We discuss about about surviving and not perfecting, motherhood, neurotic mums, challenges of writing an "explicit" motherhood book and lots of poop. 4. RAPID FIRE In this rapid fire round of questions with Jasmine and Shelly, we ask them what they will do if they swap bodies with each other. Who are their favourite TV moms? What is the funniest thing their kids have said to them? Find out in this hilarious segment. ABOUT JASMINE HAN Jasmine Han was educated in the US, and is the co-owner of SLAP Dance Studio, where she is a pole dance and striptease instructor. She met her husband in a pub that she used to run, got knocked up, got married, and moved back to her hometown of Singapore, where her family lives. She is a working mom with two kids (and no helper), and wants more kids. Connect with SLAP Dance Studio for the latest updates on classes. ABOUT SHELLY HOLLY Shelly Holly hails from Texas, and she met her husband on Match.com. She recently relocated to Singapore because of her husband’s work, and became an expat mom. She has come to realise that for every culture, there are different ideas as to how children should be raised. She has one kid, no helper, no car, and no paycheque. ABOUT I AM NOT PERFECT, I 'M A MOM Most motherhood books tell you how to be the perfect mom and how to raise the perfect kid. This is not one of those books. This is a collection of light-hearted, true stories about the bizarre experience of pregnancy, attempting to avoid public tantrums, making it through the terrible twos (and ones, threes and fours) and trying not to punch the husband while he is trying to be “helpful”. Jasmine Han & Shelly Holly, both moms with three young kids between them, regale us with their humorous collective experiences about surviving, and not perfecting, motherhood. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: 1. GUEST BIO We find out more about our guests Kristine "Kitty Woman" Hassell, who is the social media manager for GeekGirlCon - an annual convention held in Seattle that celebrates and honors the legacy of women contributing to geek culture and Ryan, the sub-editor for justsaying.asia, passionate DC Comics fan and comic book writer. 2. Connect with Kristine Hasselle on the GeekGirlCon Facebook page or as @GermanCityGirl on Twitter and find out more about this years GeekGirlCon. RYAN Ryan is the sub-editor for justsaying.asia who grew up on Marvel and then moving over to Superman and then thinking flying was a pre-requisite to being an actual superhero. Unfortunately, Ryan found out that that wasn't one of his specialties as he grew up and quickly realised that there were other superheroes in the DC Comics universe that required no special aviation or flying skills. Connect with Ryan at justsaying.asia. GEEK GIRL CON ORIGIN STORY GeekGirlCon celebrates and honors the legacy of women contributing to science and technology; comics, arts, and literature; and game play and game design by connecting geeky women world-wide and creating community to foster continued growth of women in geek culture through events. The first inkling of GeekGirlCon took form at San Diego Comic-Con in 2010. Mixed into days of programming focused on superheroes, blockbuster films, and popular television celebrities was a panel called “Geek Girls Exist.” Despite this panel being scheduled at the same time as the popular Scott Pilgrim panel, the room was packed. This panel dedicated to female geeks and nerds motivated a huge audience to come together and celebrate geek girls. Harnessing the momentum, these women and their supporters connected via social media and started tossing ideas around. They began to coalesce into an organization and a purpose. After many, many hours of hard work and planning, on October 8, 2011, the first-ever GeekGirlCon opened its doors at the Seattle Center’s Northwest Rooms and the EMP Museum. The two-day convention was a huge success. Nearly 4,000 people celebrated the female geek, including 400 attendees under 10 years old. The convention showcased 70+ hours of programming supported by 50 volunteers and 30 staff members (also 100% volunteers). Leading up to the convention, GeekGirlCon put on more than 50 events to connect with other geeks, raise needed funds, and build a strong community. Today this grassroots-led, all-volunteer organization is growing. Now close to 40 strong, the staff works tirelessly to elevate the profile of geeky women across all types of geeky activities through social media and a multitude of events, including the annual GeekGirlCon convention. An extension of Tomboy Tarts, Tomboy Tirade (pronounced Tomboy Tee-rahd, the way we like to say it), is a no-holds comedy chat podcast with a whole lot of geek and humour thrown into every episode. Hosted by the co-founders of Tomboy Tarts, Persis Shanker and Raven Lim, the first episode was produced in June 2013 to a small audience of supportive friends and family. Over the next year, the creatively quirky funny podcast has become Asia’s biggest, all-female English comedy chat podcast. Tomboy Tirade is not your typical petite Asian girl next door podcast show. It can get pretty curvy, loud and opinionated as Persis and Raven break down the world’s trendiest topics of the moment in a fun and dramatic way. Unlike most podcast shows that will send you to the ‘Sleep Zone’, Tomboy Tirade is produced like a half hour situational comedy TV show with thematic storylines, breaks and jingles between chat segments. It’s banter overdosed on caffeine. SUBSCRIBE TO TOMBOY TIRADE ON ITUNES & STITCHER OR DOWNLOAD THE SHOW FOR FREE!

This will be Australia 's 6th appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, having only missed the maiden edition in 1991. The national team that is also known as The Westfield Matildas, has twice reached the quarter-finals in 2007 and 2011. The Matildas start their FIFA World Cup campaign against the USA on the 8th of June. Can the Matildas tip World Cup scales against USA, Sweden and Nigeria in the Group of Death? 4. CHALLENGES FACING WOMEN FOOTBALLER AND OTHER PROFESSIONAL SPORTSWOMEN. Sportswomen face sexism on many turns from close scrutiny of their looks to not getting the respect for what they do. A point which is illustrated by the Women’s World Cup being played on turf, something the male players would never be expected to do. Tomboy Tirade Episode 48: Agents of G.E.E.K
"This week's episode is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Persis and Raven find themselves as agents trying to escape S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters during an attack from some nasty Asgardians, along with Matt and Pete, hosts of the Phantastic Geek podcast, who are also agents secretly working for a sub-section of S.H.I.E.L.D, also known as G.E.E.K. Listen as we talk Agent Carter, Avengers: Age of Ultron and more." The Tomboy Tarts, Raven and Persis once again, find themselves in a precarious adventure, this time with Matt and Pete, hosts of the Phantastic Geek podcast, as S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters are compromised by Hydra to allow for some nasty Asgardians, loyal to Loki to attack. Along the way, Raven and Persis find out that Matt and Pete are also secret agents working for a sub-section of S.H.I.E.L.D, also known as G.E.E.K. and they lead the Tomboy Tarts to a secret underground exit to find a way to escape. As they trudge through dark corridors and tunnels to find an escape, here's what went down this week: 1. GUEST BIO We find out more about how Matt and Pete came together as hosts of The Phantastic Geek podcast and recall their close encounters on the podcast with Ming Na-Wen and Clark Gregg, who play Agents Melinda May and Coulson from the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series. 2. NEWS HIGHLIGHTS - The success of the female Thor series. Apparently, first four Thor female-edition comic books have sold more than any male Thor comic books in 2012, proving that girlpower is more profitable. - there's also a secret Marvel movie about a lesser-known character called Crash Ryan that's in the works right now and we'll wait to see if this relatively unknown Marvel character's film will be able to hold steady at the box-office. - For Incredible Hulk fans who want to see a stand-alone Hulk film, the news is that it could or couldn't happen, only because the comic book character hasn't exactly had the best box-office run in ages and also because Marvel Studios and Universal still have to trudge through gazillion contracts in order to settle rights issues. How long that would take is anyone's guess. Meanwhile, expect to still see Bill Bixby hitchiking his way through episodic adventures on the 70s Incredible Hulk TV series now syndicating on the Syfy Channel. 3. AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D vs AGENT CARTER Then, it's time to clear the air on the Agent Carter vs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D argument. Who wore their spy better? Peggy Carter or Agent Coulson and his band of merry S.H.I.E.L.D vigilantes? Matt, Pete, Persis and Raven weigh in on the the intricacies of the two TV shows so far. 4. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON As the Asgardians close in, the Agents of G.E.E.K along with Agents Raven and Persis must find their way to Agent Coulson's bus before it's too late. In these trying moments, they decide to talk about Marvel's latest blockbuster, The Avengers: Age of Ultron. (Not much spoilers really, so you can listen safely) Things then start looking really dismal but Agent Pete finally leads the group to the workshop where 'the Bus' is waiting to pick them up or leave them dangling off a rope? Listen to this exciting Marvel-themed episode to find out. Phantastic Geek is a pop culture podcast, hosted by Matt and Pete where they bring you the best of pop culture via articles, podcasts, videos and more. "The comedy duo Persis and Raven, runs a comic shop this week in this comics themed episode of the Tomboy Tirade." It’s a slow sales day, even as the comic book shop is slowly overrun with customers turning up in superhero costumes. But first, the Pawn Star Wannabes have to channel their Kevin Smith and decide if Patrick ‘s zombie baby dolls are a good bargain for the shop. Things never stay quiet for long in the wacky world of Tomboy Tirade. Are those customers your typical cosplayers or do their superhero costumes look too realistic even for fanatic fanboys and fangirls? How did a typical day at a comic book shop explode into a Marvel versus DC superheroes showdown? Here's what went down this episode: 1. NEWS HIGHLIGHTS a) WHERE HAVE ALL THE WHITE ACTORS GONE? - Entertainment news site Deadline came under fire after claiming that white actors were having a hard time getting jobs as shown by all the hiring for TV pilots of "ethnic" actors. Editor Nellie Andreeva appreciates diversity, but “whoa;" she wrote, it was overkill. b) IS ENTHIC CASTING A FAD? - This is following by a half-hearted apology , which excused the intent of the article as to examine if the "uptick of TV pilot casting of people of color" over white actors was just a "fad”. c) NEW WONDERWOMAN COSTUME - Erik Larsen, creator of Savage Dragon and one of the founders of Image Comics, does not like the Wonder Woman costume and took to Twitter to express his opinion. “I’m tired of the big two placating a vocal minority at the expense of the rest of the paying audience by making more practical women outfits." 2. SHE MAKES COMICS - We speak to Producer Patrick Meaney about the making of “She makes comics”, what it is like being on the road to promote it and the audience response to the documentary. She Makes Comics is the first film to bring together the most influential women of the comics world and features interviews Ramona Fradon, Trina Robbins, Joyce Farmer, Karen Berger, Kelly Sue DeConnick, G. Willow Wilson and Gail Simone. 3. QUICK FIRE WITH PATRICK MEANEY - It’s time for our infamous Tirade Quickfire session with Patrick! Is he a superhero or supervillian under the mask? Listen to find out! FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PATRICK MEANEY Patrick wears many hats – he is a writer, producer, director and editor, all rolled into one. Tomboy Tirade Episode 45: Fifty Shades of Singapore
Feathers are ruffled as the Tirade tomboys serve up a comedic roast of wacky proportions! Persis and Raven are waiting their turn at a local comedy roast. Unfortunately they are up against the wildly popular comedic duo of Crispy the Talking Cock and Cindy his human sidekick from Singapore. The Tirade tomboys need to get rid of their competition. But now? They decide they first have to know their enemy by "warming up their dinner", so to speak. Crispy the Talking Cock and Cindy have a daring new show coming up in April, Singapore Stripped, where they strip away Singapore’s artificial, shiny façade to reveal its comical dark side. Our first news highlights was Vladimir (Voldermot) Putin, who refused to comment on why he suddenly disappeared for 10 days, where he canceled a trip to Kazakhstan, shelved a treaty signing with South Ossetia and skipped out on a meeting of top officials from Russia's domestic intelligence service, the FSB. Naturally the internet went into overdrive, including on Tirade, which involves tanks, Borat and Vodka. Jeremy Clarkson was fired from BBC and landed straight into comedic roast pit. Is BBC killing its golden goose? Why are grumpy old men like Clarkson so popular in UK? What does BBC really stand for? How does an assault becomes a "fracas" when Jeremy punches his producer? On Aug 9, Singapore is planning a big birthday to mark its 50th anniversary of independence. Now 7 August has just been declared as public day so that half of Singapore can cross over to Johor to annoy our neighbours. What is the national bird of Singapore and why does Crispy bear a grudge against Malaysia? We get a sneak peak at Crispy and Cindy's new show as they roast one by one, Singapore 's top tourist spots such as Marina Bay Sands, The Singapore Zoo and Orchard Road. Fries and soda not included. Then it is time for Crispy and Cindy to go on stage and they killed it. Threatened, Persis and Raven decide to take drastic action and create their own "fracas". How are they going to get out of this mess? Will they be burnt to a crisp? Stay tuned for a crispy new episode of Tirade, ruffling your feathers 2 April on iTunes, Stitcher and Libsyn! Tomboy Tirade Episode 44: The Asian Insurgents
The Asian Insurgents are coming as the Divergent sequel, based off on the Veronica Roth books, hits theatres this week! The Tomboy Tarts, Raven and Persis once again, find themselves on the run. This time they are factionless, fleeing out of dystopian Chicago on a train. They bump into the Disoriented Comedy faction members, Jenny Yang and Atsuko Okatsuka, who are also on the run and looking to escape a city at war. Jenny and Atsuko share their story on how Disoriented Comedy came about and how they forged a pretty cool comedic partnership and their upcoming nation-wide tour with the rest of the Disoriented troopers. Then we talk about the Asian American comedy revolution in the USA – why Fresh off the Boat, an autobiographical new comedy series based loosely off of chef Eddie Huang’s life, has changed the game and reaction sentiments to the show. Then it’s time to take Jenny Yang’s best-loved Buzzfeed video series on YouTube ‘Ask an Asian’ and place our guests on the spot (with spicy sauce of course). Watch the video below! Nobody wins except the newly formed Asian Insurgents as Jenny, Atsuko, Raven and Persis take a final stab at escaping. Will they succeed? You’ll just have to listen to find out! Disoriented Comedy is the first-ever nationally-touring stand-up comedy showcase that features the fresh and diverse voices of Asian American female-identified comics and the diverse friends who love us. In cities throughout the country, Diso¬riented Comedy creates a unique lineup of nationally-touring talent with local, up-and-coming Asian American female comics. While the tour's focus is on showcasing Asian American female comics, Disoriented Comedy's productions feature unique comics of diverse race, sexuality and gender not often seen on mainstream comedy club stages. Seeking a suppo¬rtive network of comed¬ians, and a desire to build audiences and community, Los Angeles-raised Atsuko Okatsuka and Jenny Yang and Seattle-based founding co-producer Yola Lu created “Dis¬oriented Comedy.” This first-of-its-kind comedy show debuted in Summer 2012 to a sold-out audience of nearly three hundred comedy lovers in the historic David Henry Hwang Theater in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. The sold-out tour has taken the fresh voices of Asian American female comics to colleges and universities such as Wellesley College, Pomona College and Loyola Marymount University, and standing-room only shows in Seattle, Washington, San Francisco, California, and the Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica, California. The troupe are now holding a show March 26, called the Family Reunion so if you're in LA, go check the show out. Tickets are priced at USD$10 plus service fee. We were told you'd need to hold your pee in a bottle. :) More details below. You can connect with Jenny and Atsuko on the Disoriented Comedy Facebook page and on Twitter. Tomboy Tirade Episode 43: Adventures in Archaeology
"This week, Persis and Raven embark on an Indiana Jones style of adventure of their own. Joining their quest for a 2500-year old missing lamp is travel blogger writer, and history geek, Candice Walsh. But the stakes are high, as they are not the only ones coveting the precious artifact. Can the zany trio survive Soviet spies, time travel and nasty bugs in this zany new episode of Tomboy Tirade?" The tomboys are in Greece but a beach holiday is far from their minds. With help of an ancient map that Persis had conveniently “borrowed” from the Metropolitan library, they are on hot a trail to unearth a mystery lamp. While excavating a top secret site, they run into Candice Walsh from Newfoundlands, Canada who is living the dream and the travel blogger behind the “Candice Does the World”. She offers to help with the digging that makes Raven very happy. Persis remains skeptical of her motive. The year has just started but many avid travelers have already looked ahead and planned ahead for their vacations. For those who can’t make up their minds, there is the Lonely Planet ‘s list for the top 10 countries to visit in 2015. Singapore tops the list, which is a big surprise for Raven. Candice did not have high hopes for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which she only visited because she won the trip to in a lucky draw but it turns to be unspoiled paradise and now she wanted to visit the neighbouring Serbia. Persis is attracted to Ireland and Candice talks about her experience about going there to find her roots, which involves seaweed baths, drunken Riverdance and 10 days of epic fun in the surfing town of Silgo. The discussion turns to Airbnb that has run into trouble with a few countries lately. Candice is a big fan of the service, having gotten some really good deals including a stay on a Greek island and opportunities to interact with the locals. The tomboys want to hear about Candice travel adventures last year where she spent the first half of the year in Europe. From New York, she flew to Greece and traveled to Turkey, Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina before rounding the year off with a Caribbean cruise. Candice discusses her first overseas trip, why she is passionate about ancient Greece history, her relocation plans to Berlin later in 2015 and shares her experiences working on in vineyard and olive farm in Greece. Behind the glamour, traveling for a living is a lot of hard work. How do you sustain yourself while traveling or make your dream trip without breaking the bank? The trio discusses travel hacks, managing your budgets, online resources, how to get the best deals, Aktarer Zaman who is sued for sharing cheap flight loopholes, nomadic Matt and his new book, “Travel the world on $50 per day” and how people can get “high” from traveling. Then it is fun part, the Rapidfire section with Candice where we find out about her “spacious” experience in Amsterdam, most memorable food experience, dream vacation spot and whether she would get a second travel tattoo. After all the tedious digging, the trio uncovers and locates the missing lamp! But alas, as it always does here on Tomboy Teee-rahd, things took a complicated and disastrous turn as the Soviet army strikes and Raven decides to take matter into her own hands. So what happens in the end? Well you’ve got to listen to find out, right? About Candice Walsh Candice Walsh is a redheaded Newfoundlander who travels and writes and the brains behind the popular travel blog Candice Does the World. Her travels have taken her around Canada and the world with stopovers in Greece, South America, Iceland, Ireland, South Africa, Jamica, Jordan, to Turkey, Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the a Caribbean. You can connect with Candice on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Or sign up for her mailing list. Go on, say hi, ask her about traveling, tell her she is beautiful or all three :) Of course, while you're doing that, don’t forget to check us out, the Tomboy Tarts! Tomboy Tirade Episode 42: The Oscar Odyssey Awards
In this tyre-screeching 42nd episode of Tomboy Tirade, the Tomboy Tarts, Persis and Raven, are planning to illegally gate-crash the Oscar Odyssey Awards, a cheaper, China-made version of the Academy Awards, with their friends and accomplices from Canberra, Australia, the Silver Screen Queens, Katie Malloy and Melissa Savage. Persis and Raven travel in style in Ellen Degeneres’ limo to the awards venue. Along the way, Persis reveals that Ellen Degeneres’ limo is packed full of surprises, from a built-in toilet to a mobile vet clinic run by every animal’s favourite doc, Dr Doolittle who lives in one of the limo’s glove boxes. As the Tomboy Tarts approach the awards venue, paparazzi are gathering all over the place but thanks to their crazy limo driver, Nitro’s stunt-driving skills, the girls manage to evade them. Not surprisingly, Raven gets car sick and pukes all over the place, just as they discover that the Silver Screen Queens were already at the awards, trying to sneak in, quite unsuccessfully backstage and are now on the run from security. Nitro screeches off and manages to eventually drop the girls off at a quieter part of the awards venue parking lot at Backstage D before unexpectedly getting into a hit and run with Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhall and an angry cat. To avoid being caught, they escape, unseen backstage where they shred the month’s Oscar news and controversies from the surprisingly lack of diversity in this year’s Academy Awards to the increasing Americanisation of the awards resulting in the dearth of appreciation of films from the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and Asia in the main categories of awards. After that, Persis trawls the backstage corridors to get an interview with Sanif Olek, whose film ‘Sayang Disayang’ was Singapore’s official Foreign Film entry in this year’s Academy Awards. Sanif reveals how the film was made, his challenges while making it and the inspiration behind the film. After that, it’s time for Persis to rejoin Raven, Melissa and Kate at the awards show as they review some of the nominees in the main categories of the awards this year before it all goes to pots when Dr Doolittle, who escapes his glove-box veterinary clinic and takes over the wheels of Nitro’s limo, gatecrashes the awards show, while accepting his award. Who crashes and burns during this star-studded ceremony? Well, you’ll have to tune in and find out, won’t you? IN A NUTSHELL: Tomboy Tirade Ep 42: The Oscar Odyssey Awards f. Silver Screen Queens & Sanif Olek Teaser | The Tomboy Tarts travel in Ellen Degeneres’ limo to the Oscar Odyssey Awards and meet Dr Doolittle Guest Intro | Say hello to the Silver Screen Queens who are on the run from security. News Highlight 1 | The lack of diversity at the 2015 Academy Awards News Highlight 2 | The increasing Americanisation of the Oscars, the death of the Australian film industry and the ‘apology award-makeup rule’ practised so blatantly at the awards. Sanif Speaks | Persis chats with veteran Singapore filmmaker, Sanif Olek on his feature debut, ‘Sayang Disayang’. The 2015 Oscars Predictions Outro | Dr Doolittle gate-crashes the Oscar Odyssey Awards. Meet Sanif Olek! Holding Persis and Raven hostage, Adele and Kate force the ringmasters to bring them back to their circus. Tomboy Tirade Ep 38: Battle's Eve@Lonely Mountain
It is the one last journey for Tolkien and fantasy fiction/movie geeks into Middle Earth with Peter Jackson's final installment of 'The Hobbit' trilogy and the Tomboy Tarts, Persis and Raven journey this fascinating ancient universe with Tolkien/Fantasy experts, the podcast crew of 'The Riddles In The Dark & Predictions Game' as we head to Lonely Mountain on the eve of the Battle of Five Armies on our own adventures. Persistia, ancient guardian of relic magic and Ravenous, warrior sword maiden from Tomboy Tarteesia journey to Middle Earth to find out what is going on at the foothills of the Lonely Mountain on the eve of the Battle of Five Armies, a war sparked by Thorin Oakenshield's need to defend his dwarf kingdom of Erebor. As they seek rest at The Prancing Pony at Bree, they bump into Corey Olsen, (The Tolkien Professor), Trish Lambert and Dave Kale, co-hosts of The Riddles of The Dark & Predictions Game, a bounty hunting group of vigilantes and experts of Middle Earth. There's no love lost between the Tomboy Tarts and Riddles in The Dark as they recall the time when they both whooped each others butts in previous misadventures but just as things heat up, a common and very dark enemy rears its ugly head, Sauron's Ringwraiths - who make an unexpected visit to this little town. From Bree, the unexpected fellowship escape to Weathertop where they spend some time talking about news highlights which include the rumours that next on the studio's list of possible Middle Earth films will be The Silmarillion. We talk about whether Christopher Tolkien and the estate will release the rights to the book, which his father left unfinished with mesmerizing stories of Middle Earth's origins from the creation of the Ainulindalë - The creation of Eä (Tolkien's Universe), The Valanquenta and more including the tales of Beren and Luthien and Túrin Turambar,. Tolkien Professor, Corey Olsen thinks Christopher would have to be stone cold dead before that happens but one can only hope. In our second news highlight at Weathertop, we predict whether this last film on Middle Earth will tank at the box office since expectations will be very high on this film to tie up all the loose ends of this trilogy and the Lord of the Rings franchise. The discussion is tripping up at Weathertop with it's cool and light breezes until a nasty little snitcher we all know as Gollum sneaks up on us and Persistia whistles for The Great Eagles to come rescue them from Gollum's evil and sneaky clutches. The Great Eagles drop them off at the borders of Mirkwood and Thrandir's Elven Kingdom as the discussion continues about what will happen in this last film, "Battle of Five Armies" but armies are already marching towards Lonely Mountain and the troup don't want to miss out on the excitement of battle and gaining the Arkenstone from Smaug's lair. The Tomboy Tarts set the Riddles in The Dark podcast unknowingly on a triathlon to Lonely Mountain and upon arrival, the bounty hunters realise they don't have the key to the secret side door. Darn it! But Persistia and Ravenous turn up with the key and unlock the door just in time before the last light of Durin's day. In the dark tunnels of Lonely Mountain, everyone gets into the thick of it wondering what the future of Middle Earth will be on TV or cinema. Some predict that a TV series showcasing the adventures of a young Aragorn could be a possibility while others predict that there might be a reboot of the LOTR series on film, a sort of 'Star Trek: Next Generation' series. Yuck! Finally, it's time to play a rapidfire questions game before everyone realises that Smaug has woken up from his sleep. Terrified, everyone wonders if they will escape Lonely Mountain without being turned to ashes. You don't want to miss out on the last EPIC episode of Tomboy Tirade of 2014! "This week, the tomboy knights set out on their winter quest to slay a dragon and save the world. Along the way, they run into legendary swordsman Sir Samantha Swords, a modern-day renaissance woman and a Medieval martial arts expert. Can the tomboys prove themselves worthy of the King Arthur's court or will they be burn into a crisp? Join us on this epic journey, filled with fantasy and adventure, coming your way December 6 on Tomboy Tirade!" A long long time ago, two tomboy knights Sir Raven of Torchwood and Sir Persis of the Ring embark on a quest to slay a dragon and save the world. Well, kind of. Wanting to be part of the Sir Arthur's Round Table, they decide to look for a dragon to slay. Along the way, they run into lengardy swordsman Sir Samantha Swords who is on her way to hunt down a wayward dragon that has burnt down five villages and is terrorising the common folk. As it was a long walk to the dragon's hiding place, there is plenty of time for these tomboys to engage in topics relevant to the medieval period, such as Game of Thrones. As the whole world knows, Game of Thrones will return to our screens again next Spring. Filming for Season 5 begun in July and the production has been making headlines since. In August, game of Thrones producers have been forced to seek a new location to shoot a planned nude walk by Lena Headey's Queen Cersei. Just last month, 86,000 people responded to a cast call request for 600 Game of Thrones extras in Spain where the series is currently being filmed. So it looks a lot of exciting things going down for season 5 so... what we can expect? Which of your favourite character will die next? What does the Historical European Martial Arts community feel about the depiction of sword fighting and other forms medieval combat in the show? What is the the difference between actual medieval fighting and the dramatisation on the screens? Credit: Photo by Rey Alabastro with green armour by Shari Finn After denying about their involvement in a Wonder Woman film all this while. Warner Bros. is now looking for a director for their film and they want it to be female. We discuss who could be up for the gig, including Kathryn Bigelow and Joss Whedon. Is this enlightening move by Hollywood to reach out to its female film community and diversifying the playing field? Or is it a sexist move that implies only a female director can helm a movie starring a feminist icon? By this logic, should Captain Marvel be directed by a woman as well? Then it is back to find about more about historical European martial arts and its background. There is a resurgent interest now where technology has enabled fans all around the world to form their community and movement. Increasingly, women are joining the movement and picking up martial arts. Who are the famous female fighters in the modern day European martial arts movement? Samantha advices beginners on how they can pick up martial arts and be part of the community. A big Lord of the Rings fan, Samantha shares with us how she found her dream gig working as a props maker and a costume/armour assistant in the Hobbit movie where she constructed armour and weapons for the characters in the movie. Besides The Hobbit movies, she has worked in special effects for productions such as The Hobbit, District 9, Chronicles of Narnia, Superman: Man of Steel and Elysium. Photo Credit: The Offering publicity shot by Steve Unwin Finally, Samantha reveals how she would slay a dragon. But as usual with the bumbling duo, things takes an unexpected turn. Tomboy Tirade Ep 36: The Great Geek Crusade!
Ahhhh! It's a perfectly beautiful Tirade Thursday in Singapore. The birds are chirping in the parks, babies are all peacefully sleeping in their strollers, music from Mozart fills the air. What better way for the Tomboy Tarts, Raven and Persis to spend their day off, indulging in chocolate eclairs and reading a comic book eh? But o no! Things always go horribly wrong for this dumbass duo as the island is suddenly torn apart at its seams by a freak tornado that blows them right into their comic book - one that was once written by the Geek Crusade, Singapore's biggest online geek community. Nicholas and Gillian, founders of the community and the Tomboy Tarts talk about the comic-book obsessed Fall TV lineup on US television where Constantine, Gotham and The Flash battle it out for coolest comic book TV series of the year. We also talk about Keanu's so-called tanking movie studio career which has ironically made him a star in other ways, thanks to his latest action flick, 'John Wick', a film that hits hard at the core of what action movies are supposed to be; raw thrills and spills and has given rise to a new genre of cinema everyone's calling 'New Action'. Then everyone must make it to the next page of the comic book before the page flips to talk about the ultimate entertainment war taking place in the world of Hollywood blockbusters - yes, it could only be the Marvel vs DC tussle. Who wins? Who loses? And why? Then, everyone continues to escape more flipping comic book pages to end up on its last page where everyone talks about the growing trend of tomboy heroines in films. Why the sudden interest in making blockbuster films helmed by female action heroes? We dissect it all this week, with a dose of slapstick, tongue-in-cheek humour minus Kim Kardashian's ass. And of course, the ultimate question: Will everyone be able to find their way out of this 2D comic book world concocted by Geek Crusade? Find out in a totally geek-a-licious episode of Tomboy Tirade! Blowing into iTunes and Stitcher 13 November! Geek Crusade is Singapore's biggest online geek community and it's home for the geeks of Asia Pacific. Tomboy Tirade Ep 34: Horror in New York City [Halloween Special]
It's a dark and evil Halloween night in 1930s New York as psychic tomboy detectives, Persis and Raven are on a demon possession case when they lose control of the situation and are forced to flee. In the shelter of a dark alleyway, the detectives gather themselves but not before an ominous message from the world's most evil force, Necessary Evil, comes through on their radio. The message is clear: New York City and its inhabitants will be destroyed and their souls sucked by Necessary Evil if they don't surrender their souls. Determined to save the day, the detectives try to find their way back to headquarters (HQ) but not before they meet a bunch of lost circus freaks from London, AhhGee, made up of Andy, Grax and Michael Bell, who are trick or treating on this foul night. Raven and Persis take some necessary precautions to ensure these circus lads aren't demons themselves and as all's well that ends well, they start talking about cults, including the Cult of Apple and One Direction. As the group try to make their way to HQ, they chance upon a strange clinic where more than just consultations happen as they chat about their favourite hospital shows, assessing the reality quotient (and ridiculousness at times) of such dramas. But the discussion is cut short when they realise that the clinic is simply a place for a vampire cult that feed on the blood of fresh corpses. A showdown happens where Raven saves the day with her sunglow flares and realising that there is no time to head back to HQ, they make their way to Battery Park where the Necessary Evil showdown will be taking place. Next, at an old abandoned theatre, the group decide to take a break from demons to watch a film (the only one on the roster) "The Killer That Stalked New York" but end up chasing zombies instead. It all ends explosively for AhhGee, Raven and Persis and Necessary Evil at Battery Park and another case is closed for the Tomboy Tarts. Or is it? Tomboy Tirade Episode 30: Wardrobe Malfunction with Joanne Kam
This week, Persis and Raven try to search for their missing guest Joanne Kam in her dressing room but fall through the rabbit hole instead and ended up on the wrong side of her wardrobe. Narnia it’s not, but the hapless duo discovers a whole new world of sequins, fabulous clothes, killer heels, cool shades and lots and lots of hairspray, ruled by none other than the one and only Joanne Kam herself who is indisputably the comedy queen of Malaysia. Going by her stage moniker Joanne Kam Po Po, Joanne is one of the funniest and best loved comedian on the Malaysian stage with her girl power and acid-tongue brand of humor. Since her big break in the legendary Boom Boom Room on both sides of the causeway, she has established her self as a comic with attitude and character, complete with fabulous costumes. For the past decade, she has been pushing the comedy envelope while being actively involved in the local television, theatre and standup scene. The talented, multi-tasking performer is also a theatre producer, sex columnist for the Malaysian Esquire and runs her own events and entertainment company, Earlier in March, she returned to the stage again with her own show Super Kam 2: The Second Kam-ming, the sequel to her acclaimed Super Kam show staged in June 2012. Joanne is currently a radio DJ on Malaysia's Red FM 104.9 "The Really Really Late Breakfast show" and you can listen to her from 2 – 5pm on weekdays. It’s all about the sex, baby, this week on Tirade’s “sexiest” episode as of yet. How is it like to row around in a vagina shaped boat? Why is Japanese artist Megumi Igarashi ‘s 3-D data of her vagina more offensive than hentai? Why does the society worship the penis but is so terrified of the vagina? The 50 shades of Grey trailer has been released recently but nobody is impressed. It’s as sexy as a … corporate video. The Tirade hosts learns the secret to Joanne’s showgirl make up and how she got her start in comedy & devloped her distinctive style. What is the clubbing scene like in the 90s Kuala Lumpur before the infamous “black out”? What is the difference between the audiences in Singapore and Malaysia? The hilarious and larger-than-life Joanne shares how she deals with detractors, the double standards for male and female comedians, advice for aspiring comedians, what is like being a sex columnist and whether Malaysian men make good lovers. All good things have to come to end, even sex, but Joanne Kam is not letting the Tirade tomboys leave that easily. The diva has plans which involves looking for new assistants to help her shine the sequins and dust the feather boas. Will Persis and Raven escape from her glamourous clutch or will they be buried under her fantabulous wardrobe? Find out in a brand new episode of Tomboy Tirade where wardrobe malfunctions and hairspray is aplenty! Joanne is also on social media. Like or follow her on Facebook and Twitter. Check out the full video of Joanne's talk at TEDxKLWomen, including how she got to where she is today, her background, her 5 pillars of success, her personal mantras and what stand up comedy can teach us all. Also a HUGE, MASSIVE shoutout to a favourite talented, young musician we have been listening to the last 2 years, Bearhead/Alexander Aultman who has generously allowed us to use some of his music on this week's awesome music jingles between stories of our News Highlights. The first track after the 3D vagina kayak story is a track called 'Echo Love' (Beat Battle 68) followed by Darker (fast version). Go check out Bearhead on Facebook and Bandcamp. Tomboy Tirade Ep 29: Ride n Seek Borneo with Jaime Dempsey
It's a tough Sunday for Tomboy Tarts, Persis and Raven, when their Harley Sportsters break down on a highway in Borneo. Great! What's next, eh? With no signal on Persis' phone, it looks like our resident tomboys are done for until Raven spots a secret biker's bar hidden in the oil palm trees ahead. As they make their way in, Raven and Persis decide to take some precautions just in case - Raven shows off her Oriental swordsmanship skills while Persis does it Indian spicy style with her customised pepper spray. When they gain access to the bar from some big, brawny biker guys, played by John Rapp and Chris Brake from The Chris Brake Show, guarding the entrance, the tomboys get massively frisked and manhandled by bouncers when Raven's sword sets off the alarm. Jaime Dempsey, from Ride n Seek Borneo saves them from the nasty bouncers and all's well that ends well (for now). Jaime Dempsey takes on Borneo in Season 2 of the Ride n Seek bike travel show on History. Jaime Dempsey is the bubbly, blonde American Biker girl and host of Ride n Seek, a bike travel show on History and History HD. Carrying on from Season 1 where Jaime began an epic road trip through West Malaysia, this time she explores both the mainstream and “off the beaten track” locations and activities in East Malaysia and Brunei. In this challenging season, Jaime's trip will cover over a thousand kilometres of distance stretched over 30 days. Her motorcycle's mobility allows her to go places few tourists have ever been... in fact some may even be new to Malaysians! Listen to the show on Podomatic. At the bar, over beers, Persis and Raven ask Jaime about how she got her gig as host of the show, what the highlights of this season are, biker tips for women, how she got into riding and safety advise when riding in Malaysia. Some of the stories featured this season include: Exploring a mysterious tunnel in Kunak, Sabah dug by the Japanese during World War II. Training and sparring with Sabah's MMA champion, Ann "Athena" Osman in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Participating in the "Feeding the Dead" ritual in an Iban longhouse in Spaoh, Sarawak. Tomboy Tirade Ep 28: A Writer's Block with Jason Tanamor
This week, Persis and Raven find themselves struck in the limbo space feared by all authors - the infamous writers' block where they run into their guest of the week, Jason Tanamor. Jason Tanamor is editor and founder of Zoiks! Online - an online magazine site that offers the best in music and standup comedy. Over the course of his career, the established writer has written for major publications such as Yahoo! & Cinema Blend and interviewed some of the biggest names in entertainment such as Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club); comedians Tracy Morgan & Hal Sparks and musicians Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) & Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers). Jason is also the author of four books and his latest novel is Hello Fabulous!, a funny story about a straight and boring guy who continually gets mistaken for a gay and fabulous guy. Oh, and there’s a huge flamingo, too! The novel takes place in Moline, Illinois, a city that Jason Tanamor is very fond of. As the comedy duo waits for Jason to rediscover his writer's mojo, they review a potato salad Kickstarter, learn about a performance artist called Milo Moiré who recently laid eggs from her vagina to a disinterested public in the nude as well as invesigate the curious of the American exchange student who was struck in a vagina sculpture in Germany and had to be recused by 22 firefighters. Jason recounts how he got into writing and talks about interviewing comedians who are not funny in person. Jason reads an excerpt from Hello Fabulous! and reveals the amusing real life event that inspired Hello Fabulous. Then Tomboy Tirade takes a funny, light-hearted look at sterotyping, how Asians don't age & look alike and the Western Mascline Ideal vs the Asian men. Could we overcome writers' block for good? Associated Press will be using robots to write articles in the future and this does not go down well with Persis. Then Persis and Raven finally got written out of the writer's block and straight into Gay Pride parade action from Hello Fabulous! with hilarious results. You can also follow Jason on twitter: @jasontanamor and listen to the Zoiks! Online podcast on iTunes. Tomboy Tirade Ep 27: World Cup Brazil Fever!
Brazil fever takes over the Tomboy Tirade pitches this week! Tara Rushton, host of Fox Sports Australia's A-League live preview show, Kick Off! and Nelson Tan, Singapore entrepreneur, actor and ex-Singapore League club, Tampines Rover's goalkeeper join Persis and Raven on this new World Cup 2014 special in Brazil. Our story begins at a match between Chile and Netherlands where far, far away in a washroom, Persis struggles with late-night irregular bowel movements, while Raven gears herself up to referee the match. As Persis' constipated situation continues, Raven gives up and heads off to the pitch, leaving Persis to wander around the stadium for a bit before spotting her guests for the week, Tara Rushton and Nelson Tan. As the match plays out on the field, at the stands, the trio dribble straight into the news highlights of the week which include England's early exit from Brazil. Everyone wonders what exactly is England's problem. Is it a bloated football scene or Steven Gerrard's inability to captain a fragmented team to victory? What does this all mean for England's future in international football competitions? Listen to find out. Then we take a bite out of Suarez's incorrigible blood-sucking tackle and take a few digs at how the World Cup stage has become an increasingly violent and aggressive competition as we throwback to some other equally infamous foul moments from World Cups past. Next, World Cup predictions are in order as everyone takes a stab at who they think will take the World Cup home this year, followed by some burning questions from the fans about the World Cup. Meanwhile Raven is dying of boredom out on the pitch. The goal-less match is putting our Tomboy Tart to sleep. As Persis turns green with envy at Raven's referee gig, she still has to mete out a World Cup quiz to Tara and Nelson before it all goes to pots when one of the players from Netherlands accidentally kicks a ball at Raven and throws her into a football coma. The whole stadium is in uproar! Persis panics as Raven, spouts gibberish while Nelson calls for the medics and Tara suggests spraying her. It's chaos as football fever officially sets in this crazy summer on Tomboy Tirade. OUR GUESTS THIS WEEK ARE TARA RUSHTON & NELSON TAN!!! Tara Rushton is currently FOX SPORTS AUSTRALIA'S host for Kick Off, the live Australian Football League (A-League) preview show. She reports from the sidelines of the A-League as well as the European football season. This former model, actress and television host was also ex-host of Singapore's EPL show, Tiger Goals in 2012. Her passion for sports and journalism began from a young age. Tara is a sporty lassie herself and quite the athlete herself, enjoying travelling, music, reading and working out in her free time. What can we say except that football runs through Nelson Tan's DNA (seen here in an orange jersey). This actor, entrepreneur and ex-Tampines Rovers goalie enjoys his time on the pitch which keeps him fit, active and close to his favourite sport. Nelson now runs a successful logistics business and when time permits, he takes weekends out on the pitch to lend his goalkeeping skills in friendly games. Nelson also enjoys acting and has appeared in many Singapore television shows, commercials and films. Unfortunately, before they can celebrate, Persis and Raven die and go to Apple Heaven after Persis' computer explodes while watching a World Cup match. Bugger!
