Tony Cunningham of Ramsbottom United – Episode 22

Last season Ramsbottom United, after a very emotional season in which the club saw 8 players, the coaches and the manager leave the club, barely escaped relegation in what came to be a long battle to the end of the season. We chat about how Ramsbottom United remains funded when we know that funding football clubs is difficult at any level, for example 13 years back when ITV Digital went bust taking with it a lot of money that was promised to clubs. This is where Ramsbottom United tries to be different, in that it keeps costs low, and in doing so, keeping itself debt free, some people would argue that this isn’t the way to go about it, but Harry is confident that it’s worked for nearly 50 years, so why change. Speaking of Harry, this year is chairman Harry Williams’ 50th season! When he formed the club back in 1966 there were 11 clubs in Ramsbottom as well as Rammy United, now however, a bit like Highlander, there is only one. Jack Wolfenden is 82 but still works at the club every day. And on match days he sells programmes and collects the balls, juggles and fire breathes! (ok I made those last two up.)
