El primer transistor, que vio la luz en 1947, medía de varios centímetros y constaba de una pieza triangular de plástico, con conectores de oro, en contacto con un cristal de germanio situada sobre una placa metálica. Todo el conjunto estaba inmerso en un entramado desordenado de cables y alambres que le daban un aspecto de escultura surrealista. Pronto, el transistor se convirtió en el elemento básico de los circuitos electrónicos y tuvo un ascenso meteórico. A medida que pasaba el tiempo, los técnicos lograban diseñar dispositivos más y más pequeños, gracias a los cuales se pudieron construir microprocesadores más potentes y baratos. Esa miniaturización permitió el desarrollo de ordenadores personales, portátiles, teléfonos móviles, tablets, etc. Actualmente se logran integrar hasta 2.000 millones de transistores en un centímetro cuadrado.
