La esquizoidia, o psicopatía esquizoide, fue aislada por los mismos famosos creadores de la psiquiatría moderna. Desde el comienzo fue creada como una forma más leve de la misma contaminación hereditaria que es la causa de la susceptibilidad a la esquizofrenia. Sin embargo, esta última conexión nunca pudo confirmarse ni ser negada con la ayuda de análisis estadísticos, y en aquel entonces no se encontró ningún examen biológico que fuera capaz de resolver el dilema. Por razones prácticas, hablaremos de la esquizoidia sin hacer más referencia a esta relación tradicional. Los textos nos proveen descripciones de distintas variedades de esta anomalía, cuya existencia puede ser atribuida a los cambios en el factor genético o a diferencias en otras características individuales de una naturaleza no patológica. Esquematicemos pues a las características comunes a las subespecies. Los portadores de esta anomalía son hipersensibles y desconfiados, pero prestan poca atención a los sentimientos de los demás, tienden a asumir posiciones extremas, y están ansiosos por vengarse ante la menor ofensa. A veces son excéntricos y extraños. Su escaso sentido de la situación psicológica y de la realidad los conduce a sobreponer interpretaciones erróneas y peyorativas de las intenciones de los demás.
