Trauma 3: Triggered

from Therapist Tierra · host Therapist Tierra

What does it mean to be "triggered?" According to Verywell mind, this term has been casually used to refer to the experience of having an emotional reaction, usually to some type of disturbing content in the media or in another social setting. Triggers vary from person to person and can be either internal or external. An internal trigger comes from within. It can be a memory, a physical sensation, or an emotion. For example, say you're in a friend’s home and you smell a fragrance that is reminiscent on a time in your life when you witnessed your Mom being abused. Your heart starts pounding. You could have feelings such as Pain Muscle tension Memories tied to a traumatic event Anger Sadness Loneliness Anxiety Feeling overwhelmed, vulnerable, abandoned, or out of control External triggers come from the environment. They can be a person, place, or a specific situation. Think about September 11th 2001. The anniversary of that date could trigger individuals who were personally impacted by that event. Things like The specific time of day The specific location of the twin towers or the pentagon The smell of the jet fuel Therapist Tierra Disclaimer: This is a personal podcast.
