Een nieuwe aflevering van Trending gemist? Bijna tachtig jaar na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt de samenwerking tussen Europa en de Verenigde Staten herijkt. Donald Trump heeft in zijn eerste termijn bewezen dat hij niet per se een vriend is van de EU en ook niet per se van de NAVO. Één ding is zeker, bij zijn tweede termijn zijn er voor Trump minder verrassingen en kent hij zijn lessen uit zijn eerste ambtsperiode. Voorheen waren Amerikaanse presidenten voorstanders een stevige band met Europa. Hierdoor konden beide partijen welvarender en sterker worden. Trump ziet de EU echter als belangrijke concurrent en heeft zelfs gedreigd met tariefmuren van 10 of 20%. Voor producten uit China wil hij tariefmuren tot wel 60% invoeren. Brussel heeft sinds afgelopen zomer gewerkt aan een antwoord. Eerst wil de EU Trump een handelsakkoord aanbieden. Hoe staat het er nu voor en welke scenario's kunnen we verwachten? Ron Lemmens ging tijdens deze aflevering van Trending in gesprek met schrijver, journalist en podcastmaker Kemal Rijken. Samen met journalist Chris Aalberts reisde hij in de weken vooraf aan de verkiezingen door de Verenigde Staten. Ze maakten daar o.m. in samenwerking met HP de Tijd de podcast 'Verkiezingen in Amerika' en bezochten daar met name in de swingstates diverse verkiezingsbijeenkomsten. Met welke indrukken kwam hij terug naar Nederland? CDA Europarlementariër Tom Berendsen is zeer betrokken bij de haven en industriestrategie van Europa. Zijn we klaar voor Trump? Hoe snel kan Europa en dus ook Nederland zichzelf strategisch autonoom noemen? Ron ging er met hem over in gesprek. Tot slot sprak Ron met Simon Wiersma van het ING Investment Office.
