Trump Just Made It Illegal for the IRS to Ever Audit Him

At 7:50 this morning, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, formerly Donald Trump’s personal criminal defense attorney, scanned a one-page document and uploaded it to the Department of Justice website. The document permanently bars the IRS from ever auditing Donald Trump, his family members, his trusts, his businesses, or anyone “affiliated” with him. No one at the IRS signed it. No one from Trump’s legal team signed it. Just Blanche.The addendum was the secret final piece of Monday’s IRS lawsuit settlement, in which Trump dropped his $10 billion suit against the IRS in exchange for a $1.776 billion taxpayer-funded “Anti-Weaponization Fund” that Trump personally controls and that explicitly includes payments to the 1,600 January 6th insurrectionists he pardoned. Senator Ron Wyden called the deal “the most brazen theft and abuse of taxpayer dollars by any president in American history.” Congressman Jamie Raskin called it “pure fraud and highway robbery.”Hours after uploading the audit immunity addendum, Blanche testified for two hours before the Senate Appropriations subcommittee. The addendum was technically public during the hearing, but no Senator asked about it. Meanwhile, Treasury Department General Counsel Brian Morrissey, a former clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas appointed by Trump himself, resigned in protest. Ninety-three Democratic House members have filed an emergency motion to block the settlement, arguing the Judgment Fund cannot legally pay people who were not parties to the lawsuit and that Congress, which holds spending authority, never authorized the fund.The New York Times previously calculated that just one of Trump’s pending audit losses alone could cost him over $100 million. The audit immunity could be worth hundreds of millions to Trump personally.This isn’t a settlement.
