Trump Ordered Signs Outside the Smithsonian Telling You the Museum is Lying & Park Service Pays

Trump signed an executive order Friday putting the National Park Service to work building warning signs on the sidewalk outside the Smithsonian, because in his own written words the National Museum of American History “has failed to appropriately honor the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.”The rest of the charges are in a 162-page report the White House dropped on the Fourth of July. It objects to the Hamilton costumes. It objects to Mickey Mouse. It objects to P.T. Barnum, to Wild West shows, and, I am not embellishing, to ukuleles. Somewhere in the West Wing a grown adult got handed the ukulele file.It also flags a magazine cover it calls “nude young women,” filed under material inappropriate for children. That cover is Entertainment Weekly, 2003. It’s the Dixie Chicks, who said they were ashamed the President was from Texas, got run off country radio for it, and posed nude to protest the Iraq War. That’s an Iraq War artifact. I was in Iraq. It belongs in a museum.On Hamilton, the complaint is that a placard called Alexander Hamilton an “influential and flawed founding father,” which the report says was “likely” because he owned slaves. Likely. They guessed. No citation. A federal report on historical rigor invented somebody’s motive and printed it.The author is Vince Haley, who runs the Domestic Policy Council. He has never curated anything. He spent twelve years working for Newt Gingrich, helped produce a Gingrich documentary about Ronald Reagan, then wrote campaign speeches for Trump. A man who writes applause lines filed 162 pages of notes on the historians.His conclusion, quoted in the order itself, is that Smithsonian leadership can’t be trusted to tell America’s story with “honesty and gratitude.” Gratitude. The 1846 act says the place exists for “the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” Gratitude appears nowhere. He invented a job requirement and then failed them on it.So why signs on a sidewalk. Why not walk in and take the exhibits down.Because he can’t. Congress handed the Smithsonian to a board of seventeen in 1846, chaired by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In May of 2025 he announced on Truth Social that he’d fired the director of the National Portrait Gallery, and the Board of Regents had to publicly explain that he cannot do that. He sent JD Vance in to clean out the collections, and Vance found out he holds one vote out of seventeen. My dude. You deployed the Vice President to a board meeting and he came back outvoted sixteen to one.So the most powerful man on earth is out on the pavement with a sign, like a guy who got banned from a Dairy Queen.Section three puts Haley in charge of those signs, announcing findings from the report Haley wrote. Section two lets Haley, Interior, OMB and GSA use “any and all available authorities,” naming the lever: “funding or contract conditions.” Two thirds of the Smithsonian’s budget is federal. He wrote the charges, he writes the signs, he holds the money.The bill goes to Interior. The Park Service is down about four thousand permanent employees since January 2025, a quarter of its workforce, hiring one for every four who leave, carrying a twenty-five billion dollar maintenance backlog, the largest in its history. Washed out trails. Closed bathrooms. Buildings rotting.Rangers are getting pulled off that to hang placards.Fifty-six men signed the Declaration of Independence.
