Trump’s DOJ Is Asking a Court to Erase the January 6th Sedition Convictions

Yesterday, Trump’s Department of Justice asked a federal appeals court to vacate the seditious conspiracy convictions of the leaders of the January 6th insurrection, including Proud Boys and Oath Keepers members who planned the attack with encrypted communications, military-style tactics, weapons caches staged outside the city, and radios. When Trump returned to office he pardoned over a thousand January 6th defendants but only commuted the sentences of those convicted of sedition, implicitly acknowledging the convictions were legitimate. Now he’s using his DOJ to erase them entirely. The filing was signed by Jeanine Pirro, now serving as Washington’s U.S. Attorney. Families of Capitol police officers are calling it a personal affront. Jurors who spent weeks rendering those verdicts are being told they were wrong. If the court agrees, the legal record of January 6th as an attempted overthrow of the United States government gets wiped. Not from history. Not from video. Just from the law.
