Tutoring chat and a chat: Why do some bright children stop believing in themselves

from The Clara James Approach to learning · host Dawn Strachan

I think the short answer is that confusion, comparison, pressure or misunderstanding can take even very capable children start to doubt themselves. Over time the story in their mind changes from "I can't do this yet" to "I'm just not that clever".I think often what also happens is that they don't like to celebrate their results with their peers, because they don't want to "brag" which means they are not celebrated in the same way that others are, again adding to that internal feeling of self doubt. But sometimes a different way of explaining something and giving them a place to celebrate their wins, will help them to completely rewrite their story
