Ubuntu Circles

from Boomer Banter, Real Talk about Aging Well

Melanie C. Gordon spoke about the Reverend Desmond Tutu describing Ubuntu as "my humanity is bound up in your humanity." That is the foundation of what we talked about in this episode. Melanie leads groups in Ubuntu Circles where we learn to connect through our personal stories. When we are open to hearing someone else's story for understanding, we are transformed. It creates a sense of belonging, a shared humanity. She talked about her time in Rwanda after the genocide, and the filming of the interviews she made there while trying to understand the slow Christian response to the geneocide. She even found Ubuntu here. I was curious about how Ubuntu is accepted in Western cultures where the focus is more on individualism. In the Ubuntu circles people learn to listen for the individuality of each person, what makes them unique. Episode Takeaways: 1. Try to find joy and purpose in your life, everyday 2.
