उदारम् आचरणम्

लक्ष्मणमेघनादयोः युद्धे लक्ष्मणेन प्रयुक्तः बाणः मेघनादस्य हस्तम् अकर्तयत् । सः हस्तः रावणस्य अन्तःपुरे मेघनादस्य पत्न्याः सुलोचनायाः पुरतः अपतत् । दुःखितः सुलोचना सहगमनं कर्तुं निश्चयं अकरोत् । किन्तु दाहसंस्कारार्थं मेघनादस्य शिरः आवश्यकम् । सा धैर्येण श्रीरामस्य दर्शनाय प्रस्थिता । श्रीरामः तस्यां महान्तम् आदरं प्रदर्शयन् मेघनादस्य शिरः दत्तवान् । मेघनादस्य अन्त्यसंस्कारं निमित्तीकृत्य एकं दिनं युद्धस्य विरामम् अपि घोषितवान् ।(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)In the battle between Lakshmana and Meghanada, Lakshmana’s arrow cut off Meghanada’s arm. The severed arm fell in front of Meghanada’s wife, Sulochana, in Ravana’s inner palace. Grief-stricken, she resolved to perform sahagamana (self-mmolation). But for the funeral rites, Meghanada’s head was required. With courage, she went to meet Lord Rama. Rama honored her greatly and gave her Meghanada’s head. Out of respect, he even declared a one-day pause in the war so that Meghanada’s funeral rites could be performed.
