¿Cómo se pesa un agujero negro que no emite luz y se encuentra tan lejos que la luz de la galaxia que lo alberga ha tardado más de 10.000 millones de años en llegar hasta nosotros? José María Diego (IFCA-CSIC/UC) nos explica cómo una extraordinaria combinación de lentes gravitacionales producidas por un cúmulo de galaxias, la aparición de dos supernovas en la lejana galaxia MRG-M0138 y las observaciones realizadas con los telescopios espaciales Hubble y James Webb han permitido medir la masa de un gigantesco agujero negro «dormido». Los resultados revelan un auténtico coloso de 6.000 millones de masas solares, unas 1.500 veces la masa de Sagitario A*, el agujero negro situado en el centro de la Vía Láctea. El descubrimiento tiene importantes implicaciones para comprender cómo crecieron las galaxias y sus agujeros negros durante los primeros miles de millones de años de historia cósmica.
