Un grupo de investigadores ha diseñado un implante cerebral que en los primeros ensayos demostró la posibilidad de incrementar la memoria, ofreciendo quizá una prometedora estrategia para el tratamiento de la demencia o de daños cerebrales resultado de traumas, accidentes o de otros eventos que produzcan daños en ella. El implante funciona como un marcapasos, enviando impulsos eléctricos para ayudar al cerebro cuando está peleando para almacenar nueva información y permaneciendo quieto cuando siente que el cerebro está funcionando bien y por ello no es necesario. Los resultados de este primer ensayo, publicados en Nature Communications, informan que el aparato mejoró en un 15 por ciento la capacidad de recordar palabras, que es más o menos lo que se pierde en el curso de dos años y medio de la enfermedad de alzhéimer.
