En las células existen orgánulos, como el proteasoma o los lisosomas, cuya función consiste en la eliminación de basura molecular que, de no ser reciclada, haría imposible la vida de la célula. En el proteasoma, las proteínas viejas entran por uno de sus extremos y en su interior son cortadas en pequeños trocitos, llamados péptidos, que abandonan el proteasoma por el otro extremo. Los lisosomas rompen, sobre todo, proteínas, pero pueden destruir también otras clases de moléculas, como lípidos o carbohidratos, gracias a que contienen en su interior numerosas enzimas digestivas que se encuentran en un pH ácido. Un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Cincinnatti, en los Estados Unidos, lleva varios años interesado en poder averiguar el estado del pH de los lisosomas de manera rápida y no invasiva, es decir, sin necesidad de extraerlos de las células, matándolas, y destruirlos.
