Un poco de oxígeno para la evolución

¿Por qué la hemoglobina es tan adecuada para el transporte de oxígeno? La respuesta a esta pregunta reside en su estructura molecular. La hemoglobina está formada por cuatro proteínas iguales dos a dos. Cada una de las cuatro cadenas lleva unida una molécula que contiene un átomo de hierro. Esta molécula se denomina el grupo hemo, que da a la hemoglobina su nombre. El átomo de hierro del grupo hemo es el encargado de unir un átomo de oxígeno. Así, cada molécula de hemoglobina es capaz de unir cuatro átomos de oxígeno. Para intentar averiguar cómo pudo suceder, un grupo internacional de investigadores ha conseguido "resucitar", mediante una combinación de técnicas bioinformáticas y de biología molecular, al ancestro más probable de la hemoglobina.
