Understanding grapevine inviders

This research article explores the phylogenetic relationships and invasion history of the Scaphoideus genus, with a particular focus on Scaphoideus titanus, a major grapevine pest in Europe. The authors sequenced complete mitochondrial genomes from multiple Scaphoideus species, including S. titanus populations from both North America and Europe. Their results reveal two genetically and morphologically distinct clades within the native range of S. titanus, indicating the need for a taxonomic revision. The study concludes that European populations most likely originated from a single introduction event from the Ontario region of Canada or the Northeastern United States, with a possible secondary introduction from Serbia.
