Understanding Narcissism

from Thriving Your Love

In this episode of Thriving Your Love, we explore how nature and nurture may interact in developing narcissistic traits. Genetic predispositions, temperament, childhood experiences, and relationships with caregivers can all play a role. Growing up in an abusive, neglectful, or emotionally unsafe environment—or with caregivers who display narcissistic traits—may contribute to the development of narcissistic patterns. However, narcissism cannot be attributed to any single cause or simply blamed on parents or caregivers. We also discuss how narcissistic traits often develop outside a person’s awareness as ways of coping with vulnerability, insecurity, or unmet emotional needs. Because these patterns can protect a person’s self-image, individuals with stronger narcissistic traits may have difficulty recognizing them in themselves and may be more likely to see the problem in others. Understanding how these patterns develop can help us move beyond labels and better understand ourselves and our relationships.
