Vancouver Island food shed. Production and security working group first meeting on May 4, 2022, 1130
from #Waterfowl · host Sarah Fowler
Our first day. In school 🏫 again, learning to grow food. Figuring out how best to get back to the 100% local food once produced, harvested and 😉 enjoyed on these lands. We know it can be done because that is how it used to be. Currently vancouver islanders import 96% of their food from off 🏝 island. But we export fish, timber and probably a few other things. How secure do we feel mining and canning? What happens to our 🍄 mushroom picking spots when that area is slated for logging? How can we build a 🐚 shellfish industry when 🚢 ships unload sewage in the waters surrounding our island. Still we are hopeful when we see a school in Nanaimo starting a childrens 🚜 farm. We know that we need to teach our children well, about what it means to live a heathly and ❤ hearty life.
