Vengeance Restrained and Truth Rejected: David’s Mercy & Jesus Before Pilate (Day 149)

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

What do you do when taking revenge is entirely within your power? Today’s reading contrasts the power of self-restraint with the tragedy of spiritual collapse. In 1 Samuel, David finds himself in a dark cave with King Saul completely vulnerable at his feet. Urged by his men to kill his pursuer, David refuses to take vengeance into his own hands, choosing to spare the Lord's anointed. We also meet Abigail, a wise and discerning woman who intervenes to stop David from making a bloody mistake against her foolish husband, Nabal. In the Gospel of John, we watch two tragic missteps: Peter utterly collapses under pressure, denying Jesus three times by a courtyard fire, while the Roman governor Pontius Pilate stands face-to-face with the Truth of the cosmos and cynically asks, "What is truth?" before choosing to release a violent criminal instead of the King.Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Samuel 24–25 – Saul pursues David with 3,000 men into the Wilderness of Engedi. Saul steps into a cave to relieve himself—the exact cave where David and his men are hiding. David sneaks up and cuts off a corner of Saul’s robe, but his conscience strikes him, and he forbids his men from harming the king. In chapter 25, the prophet Samuel dies. David seeks provisions from a wealthy, harsh man named Nabal, who insults David’s men. David mounts up for slaughter, but Nabal’s intelligent wife, Abigail, intercepts David with a peace offering, saving David from bloodguilt. God strikes Nabal down days later, and David takes Abigail as his wife.📖 John 18:25–40 – While Jesus stands trial, Peter is questioned by the courtyard fire and denies Him twice more, punctuated by the crowing of a rooster. Jesus is led to Pilate’s palace. In a private interrogation, Jesus explains that His kingdom is not of this world. Pilate attempts to release Him using a Passover custom, but the crowd roars for the release of Barabbas, a notorious rebel.📖 Psalm 68:15–20 – The psalmist compares the majestic mountain of God to the towering peaks of Bashan. He praises the Lord who daily bears our burdens, celebrating Him explicitly as a God of salvation and deliverance who provides an escape even from death itself.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT📧 Questions?
