Vicor Stock (VICR): It Beat Big and Fell 10% — Why We Say HOLD on the AI-Power Play

from Charged Alpha Stock Encyclopedia · host Colton Thomas

Vicor (VICR) Q2 2026 — Vicor (VICR), the Andover-based maker of modular power chips increasingly aimed at AI data centers, reported a strong Q2 2026: total revenue of $143.4M grew ~49% YoY once you strip last year's one-time $45M patent settlement, royalty revenue nearly tripled to $30.4M, gross margin rose to 58.0%, operating income was $34.9M, and backlog jumped 145% YoY to a record $380M (+26% sequential). Diluted EPS of $1.04 crushed the ~$0.62 estimate — but a $10.9M income-tax benefit (vs a $7.8M charge a year ago) flattered it; on a normalized tax rate EPS is closer to $0.64. The balance sheet is a fortress: $453.6M cash, essentially no debt. Yet the stock (~$208, down ~10% on the print) fell hard, sitting ~46% below its $383 high after a near-9x run off ~$42. The catch: even after the drop it trades ~20x sales and ~110x free cash flow, the first ChiP fab is at capacity (a second is heavy capex and years away), and much of the AI-power upside is already priced in. Our call: HOLD, 3/5. Vicor is one of the most fascinating setups in tech right now — a once-sleepy power-chip maker that went nearly 9x, from ~$42 to $383, on the bet that its 'vertical power delivery' technology becomes essential to feeding power-hungry AI accelerators like GPUs and TPUs. Q2 2026 was genuinely strong: revenue of $143.4M (+49% YoY ex-settlement), royalty revenue nearly tripling to $30.4M, gross margin up to 58.0%, operating income of $34.9M, and a record $380M backlog (+145% YoY, +26% sequential) as demand from AI OEMs and hyperscalers surged. And yet the stock fell ~10% on the print. Why? First, the headline $1.04 EPS beat leaned heavily on a $10.9M income-tax benefit — normalize the tax rate and it's closer to $0.64, barely above the ~$0.62 estimate. Second, the CEO said the first ChiP fab is nearing full capacity, so a record backlog can't convert without a second fab that's heavy capex and years away. Third, valuation: even after a 46% pullback from the high, VICR trades ~20x sales and north of 100x free cash flow — richer than proven analog giants like ADI and TXN, and in line with high-flyer Monolithic Power. Our owner-earnings DCF, giving real credit to the AI-power ramp (a bull case to ~$275) but respecting the capacity and tax-quality caveats (a bear near $100), lands a probability-weighted fair value near $180 — below today's ~$208. A genuinely exciting, debt-free, AI-power inflection story, but with no margin of safety after the run. Our call: HOLD, 3/5. We're materially more cautious than the Street's ~$388 average target (Buy, 6 of 7 analysts) — and note those targets were mostly set near the June highs, so watch whether they get cut toward the stock, not the reverse. Get interested in the $150s; watch the second fab and real AI design wins. Not financial advice. THE CALL: HOLD (3/5, A REAL AI-POWER INFLECTION — BUT PRICED FOR PERFECTION, AND THE EPS BEAT WAS TAX-FLATTERED) — base-case value ~$180 vs ~$208 today. What to watch: concrete progress on the second fab plus named AI design wins and the record backlog actually converting to revenue at strong margins — which would justify the premium multiple and prompt an upgrade toward a Buy; the risk to respect is that the first fab is already at capacity, the headline EPS beat leaned on a tax benefit, and at ~20x sales any disappointment (backlog stalling, royalties plateauing, or the fab timeline slipping) could re-rate the stock hard, as its 46% drop from the high already shows Also on YouTube: @ChargedAlpha DISCLAIMER: For informational and educational purposes only.
