The Mahogany Ship is a legendary shipwreck, first reported by whalers in 1836, believed to lie buried beneath the shifting sand dunes between Warrnambool and Port Fairy in southwest Victoria.While famously theorised by Kenneth McIntyre as a 16th-century Portuguese caravel that would rewrite Australian history, alternative research suggests it may instead be a crudely built 19th-century vessel or a ship constructed by escaped convicts.Despite numerous archaeological expeditions and significant public interest, the wreck remains an unsolved maritime mystery that has been completely obscured by coastal sands since the late 1880s.
