Klipperne her er tørre, sprukne, som om de er blevet brændt og derefter glemt. Intet grønt. Kun støv, grus og mørke formationer, der bryder horisonten i ujævne linjer. Ud af mørket mellem klipperne træder en mand. Hans tøj er slidt ned til det nødvendige. Stoffet er stift af sved, støv og gammel regn. Rygsækken hænger lavt og tungt, trukket af vægt og mange dages march. Hans hår er tyndt og trukket til siden som hentehår, fedtet af rejsen, og huden er mærket, små ar, sprækker, støv der har sat sig fast i hver fold. Han går ikke hurtigt og hans blik er rettet mod vest.
