And to make this video even more helpful I'm going to incorporate them into situations you might encounter in everyday life.What is a phrasal verb? So what exactly is a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is when you take a verb and add something after it like a preposition or an adverb.Let's talk about the verb blow. For example, if someone blows a trumpet it means they push air from their mouth to make a sound. So, one meaning of blow is to push air. Now up is a preposition and it means above. But when you combine blow with up you get the phrasal verb blow up. Blow up has a completely different meaning. It can mean to explode. For example, they blew up the car. This shows that adding up can change the meaning of blow creating a new phrase with a new meaning.Transitive/Intransitive and Separable Phrasal Verbs Some phrasal verbs need an object. For example, please take off your shoes. Your shoes are the object. When you use the phrasal verb take off in this way, you always need to say what you're taking off. So in this case, your shoes.Some phrasal verbs are separable. For example please take your shoes off. The object your shoes goes between the verb and the particle.Some phrasal verbs don't need an object. For example I wake up.Now let's look up some of the most commonly used phrasal verbs.
