Vol316.日常英语学习8 Habits to Fix Your Finances

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Welcome back to the Learn English podcast, my friend. I'm Leo.And I'm Gwen. It's great to have you here with us today. Leo, you sound pretty excited today. What's on your mind?Hmm, I've been thinking about something interesting. Let me ask you this. Have you ever opened your bank account and thought, "Wait, what happened to my money?"Oh, yeah. That already feels a little emotional to talk about. Right? Sometimes you check your balance and think, "Okay, I'm doing fine." And other times it just gives you a heart attack looking at your account.Yeah, that's definitely not just you. I've been there, too.Wait, Gwen, seriously? You, too?Of course. I can talk about money very logically in theory, but in real life, money has its own way of teaching me harsh lessons.Wow, that's a bit shocking. There's actually a big gap between knowing about money and understanding your own money. Well, and when we talk about this, there is a phrase for it: financial literacy.Ooh, sounds fancy.Financial literacy means truly understanding where your money comes from, where it goes, and most importantly, being able to control it.That sounds great, but I don't have a finance degree or anything. And that's exactly the good news in today's episode. You don't need any degree. You can still manage your money with small habits, simple things that you can stick to over time. So, this episode is not going to turn us into millionaires in 1 week.Nope, silly. Today, we're going to share eight simple money tips that school never teaches you. They won't make you rich overnight, but they will help you fix the way your money is flowing in your life. And as always, we'll thoroughly explain everything so you can actually use it in your daily life. This episode is at a B2 level, so the vocabulary might be a bit richer. But don't worry, we'll repeat the key ideas and explain any new phrases when they come up. If you're at a B1 level, don't be afraid. It might feel a bit challenging, but that's exactly how you improve. All right, then what are we waiting for? Let's get started. The Problem with Modern SpendingSo, Leo, I'm guessing that what you said earlier was about how you handle your money, right? Mind sharing?Well, you know how it is. I've got a pretty steady job. I also do some side jobs.Sounds like you stay busy.Yeah, there was even one time I almost bailed on you just because of a side job.I remember that, but hey, it's in the past. Keep going. So, yeah, my income is honestly not bad. Sometimes I open my banking app, I actually feel pretty good about myself. That sounds great, though. One day, I was out shopping and when I tried to pay, my card got declined.Wait, what?It was so awkward. Luckily, I had some cash on me, so I could still cover it.Oh, no.When I got home, I just sat there thinking it through. Then it hit me. Wait, where did all my money go?That sounds really familiar. I don't think you're the only one. Right? You get paid, you feel great, you even tell yourself you're going to save this month, but money just disappears anyway.Exactly, and you have no idea what happened.Leo, honestly, most of the time it's rarely the big purchases that drain your bank account. It's all the little things you don't even notice.Yeah, the way we spend money now is just so different from before.Totally. Like in this digital age, you can shop online in seconds. A few clicks and it's done. No real thought involved.I agree. Sometimes I finish checking out and I can't even remember what I just bought. It's because paying has become way too painless. You just tap a card, scan a QR code, and you're done. There's no real feeling of losing money. That's true. You spend without feeling it. On top of that, you have those sneaky everyday expenses: coffee runs, takeout, random subscription services.Ugh, don't even get me started. I pay for Netflix every month, but I barely have the time to watch anything.See, each of those charges seems tiny on its own, but when you look at the monthly total, it's a completely different story. That hits. The convenience of modern life is genuinely such a financial trap. And that's not even the worst part. Think about the pressure from social media, like seeing everyone else living this amazing life and feeling like you should, too.Yep. What's actually the problem here? The problem isn't how much you earn, it's that you don't have control over how money leaves you.Okay, so if the problem is that I can't control my spending, should I start writing down every single purchase I make?Actually, that's not the best first step. You might keep up at first, but it's easy to forget when you're busy.Oh, I see. So, what's a better approach then?

    Vol315.日常英语学习Shopping for a Social Event

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hello. Today, you will listen to a real English conversation about going shopping. A man needs to buy clothes for an important social event. But, there is a problem. The event is very modern and youthful, and he's not sure how to dress. He wants to look good, make a great impression, and feel confident. But, will he follow fashion or his own style? Let's listen to their conversation.Conversation: Part 1Hello. Excuse me. I need some help.Of course, sir. How can I help you?I have an important social event this weekend. And I need to look presentable. That sounds great. What kind of event is it?It's a young and modern event. Many young people will be there.I see. And what style do you usually wear?Well, I usually wear classic clothes. Simple, elegant. Nothing too modern. That's a good style. But, for this event, maybe we can try something more fashionable.Yes, that's why I'm here. I want to look good. Maybe a little more modern.Perfect. Let me show you some options. Okay. This is a slim-fit shirt. It's very popular now. The material is light and comfortable.Mhm. It looks nice. What color is it?It's light blue. It gives a fresh and modern look.I like the color. But, is it too young for me?Not at all. Anyone can wear this. It's about how you combine it.I suppose so.I understand. You can combine it with these dark jeans.Jeans? For a social event?Yes. Nowadays, it is very common. These are elegant jeans, not casual.Mhm. Interesting. Also, you can add this jacket. It's modern, but still elegant.Let me see. Oh, it's very stylish.Yes. And the material is very soft. You will feel comfortable. What about the size?I think you are a medium. But, let's check. Okay. Yes, medium fits you perfectly.Good. I am medium size then. Now, let's talk about shoes. These sneakers are very trendy.Sneakers? I usually wear formal shoes.I understand. But, these are clean and elegant sneakers.Um... I'm not sure. You can also add a watch. Accessories are very important.Yes, I like watches. This one is simple, but modern. Mhm. It looks nice. So, you have shirt, jeans, jacket, sneakers, and a watch.Yes, everything looks good, but...But, what?I don't feel like myself. What do you mean?It looks good, but it doesn't feel like my style.Mhm. That's important.I think I prefer something more... more classic. That's okay. Let's find something that matches your personality.Yes, please. And sorry for wasting your time. No, you don't have to apologize. That's okay. Here is a white shirt. Very classic and elegant.Mhm. I like that. And these formal pants. Perfect for any social event.Yes, this feels more like me.You can add this blazer. It's simple, but very elegant. This is perfect. And formal shoes?Yes. Definitely. Great choice. You know, I wanted to try something new.And you did.Yes, but I think it's more important to feel comfortable.I agree, sir. Fashion is important, but your essence is more important.Exactly.You can follow trends, but you should always be yourself. That's true. In the end, confidence is the best style.I couldn't agree more. Thank you.

    Vol313.日常英语学习Own Your Worth

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888All right. Welcome back to Podcast and Chill, where we talk about real stuff in real English at a pretty chill pace. If this is your first time here, hi, I'm Gwen. And I'm Leo.We're basically two people who think too much and talk about it so you don't have to think alone. That's actually a nice way to put it. Because today's topic is one of those things that a lot of people feel but never really talk about out loud. Yeah, we're talking about self-worth. And to be clear, we are not talking about the kind of self-worth that comes from your job title, your GPA, or how productive you were today. We're talking about that quiet internal question that always pops up: Am I actually enough? It sounds heavy, I know. But we're going to keep it honest, keep it light, and hopefully keep it useful. We'll be here helping you build your own self-worth step by step at your own pace. You don't have to have it all figured out right now. Just being here, listening, and reflecting. This podcast is designed for people around the B2 level. So we speak naturally with richer English, but we also don't throw in a hundred idioms a minute. Right, it's that sweet spot where you're slightly challenged but never lost. And as always, we've got a vocabulary recap waiting for you at the end. So if you miss a word, don't stress. Just stay with us.Language and life lessons, two for one. So, grab your coffee, your tea, or just get comfortable wherever you are. Let's dive in.The Root of the Problem: Outsourcing Self-WorthMaybe I should start with the root of the problem. When you don't have a strong sense of your own self-worth, how do you even measure it?You outsource it. You look for it outside yourself, mostly in other people's approval. Because if you can't see your own value, you desperately need someone else to tell you that you are enough. Exactly. It's like floating without an anchor. You start relying on a compliment, a like on Instagram, or just someone noticing you to feel okay about yourself. And the crazy part is, you don't even realize you're doing it.Until something tiny happens.Right. Let's look at a real-life example. Imagine you see a friend post a story that they are nearby. You feel excited, so you text them, "Hey, want to hang out?" with a big smiley face emoji. You're totally pumped. Yeah, a good vibe. But then they reply, "Hey, kind of busy. Catch up later." No emoji, no exclamation mark, just a dry simple text.Oh, no. The dreaded dry text. Now, a secure person would just think, "Oh, they're busy. Cool." But if your self-worth depends on them, your brain immediately calls an emergency meeting. Yes, you start completely spiraling. Your brain goes, "Wait, are they mad at me? Did I do something annoying? Do they not want to be friends anymore?"Your entire mood for the day is ruined just because of a missing emoji. And that shows exactly how vulnerable you become when your value is tied to someone else's reaction. So, it's not about them at all. It's how we interpret their response. Right, your reaction is tied to their approval.

    Vol312.日常英语学习The Weight of the Past

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888It feels so strange being here again, you know? Sitting in this same garden. Looking at the same old walls, the same sofa, even the same smell. It's like nothing changed. But at the same time, everything feels different. Now, I was walking here and I started remembering so many things. Like when we were kids, running around, fighting for stupid things, laughing for no reason, and thinking life was simple. Do you remember how we used to stay up late watching TV, even when we knew that mom would get angry the next day? It was so funny. Those nights felt so big. Like we owned the world. Like nothing bad would ever happen to us.Yeah, I remember. I remember almost everything. Sometimes more than I want to, actually. But yeah, those nights, they were good. We didn't have much, but it didn't feel like we were missing anything. We had each other and that was enough. You were always so full of energy. Always asking questions, always following me everywhere. Like I was some kind of hero or something. It was annoying sometimes. I won't lie. But also, it made me feel important. Like I had to be strong for both of us.You were important. For me, you were everything. I mean, dad was not really around. And mom was always tired, uh always working, always stressed. But you were there. You helped me with homework. You walked me to school. You even made me food when mom couldn't. I didn't understand it back then, but now I see it. You were just a kid, too. And still, you acted like an adult. That's crazy when I think about it now.I didn't have a choice, Lucas. Someone had to do it. And honestly, I didn't think about it too much. I just did what needed to be done. That's how things were in this house. You adapt or you break. And I didn't want you to feel what I felt growing up. So, I tried to protect you from that. You did a good job. At least most of the time. I mean, I have good memories, really good ones. Like when you taught me to how to ride a bike, even though I kept falling again and again. And crying like a baby. Or when you defended me that time at school. When those older kids were making fun of me. I remember how scared I was. But when you showed up, everything changed. I felt safe again. I always felt safe when you were around. That's all I wanted. For you to feel safe. That's why I used to do it.Yeah. But not everything was like that.Um, what do you mean? I don't understand. Tell me.I mean, there were things I didn't understand. Things that didn't make sense. Things that I remember, but I never really talked about. Maybe because I was a kid. Or maybe because I didn't want to think about them too much. But now, being here again, all those memories are coming back.Lucas, we don't have to go there. That's not necessary.W- what? Why not? Why don't you want to go there?Well, because some things are better left in the past. That's it.Well, that's easy for you to say, but not for me.I'm not saying it's easy. I'm saying it's necessary. Come on. Don't do it.No, I don't think it is because those things didn't just disappear. They stayed here. And I never understood them. Like that night. Do you remember that night? When mom left and didn't come back until the next morning? I was scared, Daniel. I was really scared. And you... you locked me in the room.Lucas, don't. We don't have to talk about that. Really.

    Vol311.日常英语学习Real Life Conversations

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Conversation 1Hello.May I speak to Nancy, please?Speaking.Uh hi. Um my name is Mari and I'm calling about the room for rent. I saw your ad at the campus housing office.Oh, right. Okay. Uh are you a student?Well, right now I'm just studying English, but I'm planning to start college full-time in March.I see. Where are you living now?I've been living in a house with some other students, but I don't like it there. Why? What's the problem?Well, first of all, it's really noisy and it's not very clean. The other people in the house are real slobs. I mean, they never lift a finger to clean up after themselves. It really bugs me. I need a place that's cleaner and more private.Well, it's really quiet here. We're not home very much. What do you do?I teach English at the college. Wait a minute. Didn't we meet yesterday at the placement exam? Oh, you're the girl from Japan. What was your name again?Mari.Right. What a small world. It really is. By the way, who else lives in the house? The ad said there are three people.Well, besides me, there's my husband, Andrew, and my cousin, Jeff. He's a musician and a part-time student. Uh are you okay with having male roommates?Sure, as long as they're clean and not too noisy.Don't worry. They're both easy to live with.Okay. Um is the neighborhood safe?Oh, sure. We haven't had any problems and you can walk to school from here.Well, it sounds really nice. When can I come by and see it?Can you make it this evening around 5:00? Then you can meet the guys, too.Yeah, 5:00 is good. What's the address? It's 3475 Hayworth Avenue. Do you know where that is?No, I don't.Okay. From University Village, you go seven blocks east on Olympic Avenue. At the intersection of Olympic and Alfred, there's a stoplight. Turn left and go up one and a half blocks. Our house is in the middle of the block on the left. That sounds easy.Yeah, you can't miss it. Listen, I've got to go. Someone's at the door. See you this evening.Okay, see you later. Bye.Bye-bye.Conversation 2Hello.Hi, Dad.Jeff, how are you?I'm fine, Dad. How's Mom? Did she get over her cold?Uh yes, she's fine now. She went back to work yesterday. That's good. Um Dad, I need to ask you something.I'm sure, son. What is it?Well, uh the truth is I'm broke again. Could you lend me $200 just till the end of the month?Broke again? Jeff, when you moved in with Nancy and Andrew, you said you could make ends meet. But this is the third time you've asked me for help.I know, I know. I'm sorry. But see, my old guitar broke and I had to buy a new one. I can't play on a broken guitar, right?Look, Jeff, if you want to play in a band, that's okay with me. But you can't keep asking me to pay for it.Okay, okay, you're right. But what do you think I ought to do? Everything costs an arm and a leg around here.Well, first of all, I think you'd better go on a budget. Make a list of all your income and all your expenses. And then it's simple. Don't spend more than you earn. But that's exactly the problem. My expenses are always larger than my income. That's why I need to borrow money from you. Then maybe you should work more hours at the computer store.Dad, I already work 15 hours a week. How can I study and work and find time to play with my band?Come on, Jeff. When I was your age—I know, I know. When you were my age, you were already married and working and going to school. That's right. And if I could do it, why can't you?Because I'm not you, Dad. That's why.All right, Jeff. Calm down. I don't expect you to be like me, but I can't lend you any more money. Your mother and I are on a budget, too, you know.Maybe I should just drop out of school, work full-time, and play in the band in the evenings. I can go back to school later.I wouldn't do that if I were you.Yeah, but you're not me, remember? It's my life. All right, Jeff. Let's not argue. Why don't you think about this very carefully and call me back in a few days. And in the meantime, you'd better find a way to pay for that new guitar.Yes, Dad.All right. Goodbye, son.Bye.Conversation 3Hey, Jeff. What's going on?Oh, I'm looking at the classified ads. It looks like I have to get a job.I thought you had a job at a computer store or something.Yeah, but that's part-time. I need something full-time.Really? But what about school? What about your band? How can you work full-time?Well, to tell you the truth, I'm probably going to drop out of school for a while. I'm just not in the mood for studying these days. I'd rather spend my time playing with my band. But my father won't support me if I'm not in school.I see. Well, what kind of job do you want to get?Well, ideally, something involving music, like in a record store. But if that's not possible, I don't know. But whatever I do, it'll be better than my first job.Oh, yeah? What was that?Believe it or not, the summer after I finished high school, I worked at Burger Ranch. You? In a fast food place? What did you do there?I was a burger flipper. You know, I made hamburgers all day long. That sounds like a pretty boring job.It was the worst. And I haven't gone inside a Burger Ranch since I quit that job.Hi. What's so funny? Do you remember my job at the Burger Ranch?Oh, yeah. That was pretty awful. But actually, it doesn't sound so bad to me right now. Why, Nancy? What's wrong?Oh, I'm just really, really tired. I'm teaching four different classes this term and two of them are really large. Sometimes I think I've been teaching too long. How long have you been teaching?12 years. Maybe it's time to try something else.Like what?Well, I've always wanted to be a writer. I could work at home.Oh, don't listen to her, Mari. She always talks this way when she's had a bad day at school. At least you have a good job, Nancy. Look at me. I'm broke and Dad won't lend me any more money.Oh, stop complaining. If you're so poor, why don't you go back to the Burger Ranch?Listen, you two, stop arguing. Look at me. I can't work at all because I'm an international student.Okay, okay. I'm sorry, Nancy. Tell you what. Let's go out to dinner. I'll pay.But you're broke. All right, you pay.

    Vol310.日常英语学习Start Managing Energy

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey everyone, welcome back to Podcast and Chill where you learn English while growing up through real-life topics. I'm Leo.And I'm Gwen. Today we want to talk about something very real. Why is it that in such a modern world we're actually getting busier and more tired?Great topic, Gwen. Honestly, I wonder about this, too. We have vacuums, dishwashers, and washing machines, blah, blah, blah. All kinds of gadgets to make life easier.Right. We've got online shopping, food delivery, literally everything comes straight to your door. But somehow time just disappears. And yet, instead of actually relaxing with all that saved time, we end up burning so much mental energy on the little things. Our brains just get completely mentally crowded.Oh, mentally crowded. Like having too many tabs open in your brain all loading at once, right?Exactly. A dozen phone notifications, scrolling through random videos, catching up on trending posts on Instagram, then boom, the day is gone. So, in today's episode, we'll break down the core reasons behind this problem. And of course, we'll offer some simple, practical solutions so you can finally take back control of your time. This episode is aimed at around the B2 level. But if you're B1, feel free to challenge yourself. Don't worry if you hit any tough words, we'll recap the key vocabulary at the end. All right, no more waiting. Let's get started. The Generational Gap & Fast-Paced Modern LifeHey, Gwen. Before we get into the causes, I think we should talk about something first.Like what?Like the difference between generations. Especially the gap between life before and after technology.Okay, then. I've been thinking about that, too, actually. It feels a little strange.Right? Like why did our grandparents and parents seem so much more relaxed and happy back then? Clearly, they didn't have modern technology. Almost everything was done by hand. And yet, they seem to enjoy life more. I think I know why.Ooh, look at Leo getting all wise today.Hey, stop teasing me. I'm trying to be serious here.Okay, okay. I'm just messing with you. Go on, tell us why. Why did our grandparents live happier lives without all this technology?I think it comes down to one word: Freedom.Oh, that actually makes sense. Freedom is the feeling of being able to do what you want without being controlled or rushed.Yeah. Back then, they didn't have much. But they had time. More than that, they actually enjoyed the process of doing things.I totally get that feeling. When I was little, I used to bake cookies with my grandma. That sounds so sweet. One time, I burned a whole batch. But instead of getting upset, we just laughed at my clumsiness and started over.Love that. So, what about now? Now we have all this technology, but we're living way too fast. Work pressure, endless emails, complaints, deadlines, life goals. It feels like sometimes you need to clone yourself just to keep up.I'm kind of shocked about you today, Leo. Very impressive.Thank you. But anyway, that's true. There's so much going on that we just keep our heads down from morning till night.Yeah. And the crazy part is after all that rushing around, we crawl into bed and think, wait, what did I even do today? Or worse, where did my time even go today? So, why does it feel like our time is constantly slipping through our fingers?Time vs. EnergyOn the surface, I'd say it's because our brains are getting way too much input every single day. Got 5 free minutes? Next thing you know, you've been scrolling for an hour. That's super common.Yeah, it happens all the time. But I don't think that's the real problem. What do you mean?

Actually, I've been waiting for that guy to ask me out since he started working here.Hey, Alex. Can I talk to you for a moment? I feel a little nervous today. I can't focus on my work and my mind is somewhere else. I keep thinking about something or someone. Actually, I don't know why it feels so hard to say it out loud, but I really need your advice. Because you are my best friend here at work. You know that. And you always listen to me without judging me. I need your help.Calm down. Take a breath and tell me, what's going on? Is it about work, stress, or is it about someone? I can see it in your face. You don't need to rush. I'm here.O-okay. I'll say it. I like someone from work. I've liked her for a long time now. Every time I see her, I feel nervous. My heart beats faster and my mind goes blank. I want to invite her out. Maybe for a coffee or a simple walk. But every time I try, I can't find the right words. I don't know why. I feel stupid. Like I'm back in the school. I don't know what to do.Ah, I knew it. That explains everything. And let me tell you something important. Feeling nervous means you really care. And that's not a stupid at all. It's human. It's normal. So, tell me, who is she? Do I know her? I want to know.Yes. You know her. It's Emma. She works in accounting. She's kind, calm, and always smiles at everyone. Sometimes we talk a little about work or about small things. But nothing personal. I'm afraid of making things awkward or uncomfortable.Okay. I understand. Mark, listen to me carefully. Inviting someone out doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be honest. You don't need big words or dramatic speeches. Just be yourself. Why don't you go talk to her today? Start with a normal conversation. You just need to be natural, my friend. I know you can do it.Do you think so? Well, I suppose I can try. What can I lose, right? That's the right attitude. I think you will do it fine. Don't worry.Okay. I think she's in her office right now. I'll go talk to her.Hey, Mark. Good morning. How are you today?Oh, uh hi, Emma. Good morning. Um um I'm good. Just busy, you know? Work is a little crazy today.Yeah. I understand. Mondays are always like that. But tell me, did you have a good weekend? My weekend? Uh yes. Yes, I stayed at home mostly. Watched some movies, relaxed a bit. Um what about you?I visited my sister and spent some time with my family. It was nice. Sometimes you really need that break.Yeah. Family time is important. Important. Very important. Is everything okay, Mark? You seem a little distracted today.Oh, yes. Yes, I'm fine. Everything's fine. I I just I well, I should get back to work. Nice talking to you.Okay. See you later. Um that was weird.Mark. Hey. So, how did it go? Did you do it?

    Vol308.日常英语学习Midwest American Accents

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hi everybody. Welcome back to my YouTube channel. In today's video, I will be interviewing my friend Marcellus who is from Cincinnati, Ohio. Let's get started. I'm with my friend Marcellus. So, Marcellus, how many siblings do you have?I have three. I have a sister and I have two brothers. What's it like having two brothers and one sister?I got built-in best friends, so it's great. Are you the oldest, youngest, in the middle?Me and my younger brothers share the middle. I grew up the middle and then we had my sister like just way later. So then I end up sharing the middle. But yeah, middle. What do you do for work?I do three things. I work at a skateboard shop. I serve. And then I also cut hair at my house. So it's kind of like a side gig.Marcellus said cutting hair is his side gig. A side gig is a job you do in addition to your main job, usually to make extra money. It's casual, flexible, and not your main source of income. For example, I work at a school, but I also sell jewelry online. That's my side gig. You'll also hear side hustle. Same meaning. I work at a bank, but I also do photography on weekends. That's my side hustle. The word gig alone just means a job. Musicians use it all the time. We have a gig tonight at 9:00.What's your favorite job out of the three of them?Cutting hair. Cutting hair is probably the best one. It's like talking with the homies, pretty much.He mentioned spending time with the homies. So what does that mean? Homie or homies for the plural means a close friend. Someone you grew up with, live near, or just feel really comfortable around. For example, I'm not going out tonight, just chilling with my homies. The word comes from homeboy, which originally meant someone from your same neighborhood or hometown. Over time, it got shortened and spread everywhere. Now people use it all across the US, not just in one region. What kind of music do you listen to?All right, that I know a lot of people say everything, but everything. I love French music, UK rap, even R&B, American R&B. I love rap. Um, some bachata, some Brazilian funk. Oh man, like everything. I've recently started liking country, so I've even been dabbling in country music.Did you catch that word? He said he's been dabbling in country music. What does dabbling mean? To dabble means to try something casually. You use it when someone does an activity just for fun without becoming an expert. I dabble in photography, which means I take photos sometimes, but I'm not a professional. She dabbles in cooking. She cooks occasionally and tries new recipes, but it's not her main thing. He used to dabble in music. He played music a bit in the past, but never seriously. What kind of sports do you follow here in America? Like what do you like to watch?Football. I fell back in love with football. Not soccer, football. No, not soccer football. American football.American football. American football. Growing up, I always played football. I started playing when I was about four. That was my first love and then I've always been a fan of the Bengals. I stopped being a fan for a few years only because I just didn't watch the sport. Recently, I've been picking up a bit of baseball as well and that was another one of my like first sports I played growing up. I've got to be honest. I honestly just go to the games for the food.Nothing wrong with it. Nothing wrong as long as you're supporting the right team. Are you from Cincinnati originally? Cuz you said you grew up like playing football and stuff. You like the Bengals?Born and raised. I'm from Madisonville.Marcellus said he was born and raised in Cincinnati. This means he was born there and grew up there. Same city his whole life. Yeah. Born and raised here. I don't know if I'll say. What is your favorite thing about Cincinnati and your least favorite thing?Just to get the negatives out the way, least favorite thing are probably the drivers and then the amount of construction we always have and then how bad the roads can be. Like I just feel like I'm always hitting a pothole.A pothole is a hole or crack in the road, usually caused by cold weather or old pavement. They can damage your car's tires and wheels. I hit a pothole and got a flat tire. The city needs to fix all these potholes. Cincinnati and many Midwest cities are famous for bad potholes in winter. So now you understand exactly why Marcellus is complaining. The roads, they are bad.The roads are bad.I mean, my car has been in the shop like twice in the past year cuz I went over three, four potholes and it costs a lot of money to repair your car. My favorite thing in Cincinnati, honestly, the atmosphere, especially when it comes to events and sports and then also the diversity of people. You could like go somewhere and just meet someone you never thought you'd meet and then also like take a few steps down the road and meet a completely different person.Since you're from Cincinnati, do you think you have a Midwest accent?I never thought about me having an accent until I was a little bit younger. I was like a teenager and I was on the Xbox and somebody was like, "Yo, where are you from?" I was like, "I'm from Ohio." They're like, "You got an accent." I'm like, "What?" And then like as I got older and like I will like recognize that I'll say some words with like a little bit of like twang to it or like just like I'll emphasize it a different way someone else would.

Vol307.日常英语学习Train Your Brain to Speak English

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey everyone, welcome back to Pod Chill, the chill place to practice English without stress. I'm Leo.And I'm Gwen. You can listen to us while walking, cooking, or even sleeping. Today's topic is train your brain to speak English. Gwen, quick question. Why do so many people think they can't speak English?Because they think they're not good enough.Ouch, harsh. But is that true? Many people think they can't speak English because they're not smart. Not really. The real problem is translating word by word in their heads.Which is why their brain loads.Buffering.Still buffering. Yes, and in this episode, we will share simple strategies you can implement right away. And help you internalize the language so speaking feels natural, not like solving a math equation. This episode is around B1 level, slightly touching B2. So if it feels hard, take a deep breath. That's just your brain warming up. Stick around till the end for English Word Journey because one word might change your English life.Or at least make you sound cooler, which is basically the same thing. Let's go.The Illusion of FluencyGwen, I've met so many learners who understand almost everything in English. But the moment they have to speak, they freeze like a paused video.Oh, yes, the classic "I know it, I just can't say it" situation.Exactly. Why does that happen? If they can read and listen well, shouldn't speaking be easy, too? You'd think so, but nope. Many people fall into the illusion that being good at studying English grammar means they can speak it.The illusion of fluency? Sounds dramatic.Dramatic, but very real. Think about it. They studied English for 10 years. They can ace grammar tests. They get high exam scores. Parents are proud, teachers are proud, certificates all over the wall. Then someone asks, "How was your day?" The brain just shuts down.Exactly. Because studying from books without speaking practice is like learning to drive only from a manual. You mean they know the theory, but never sat in the driver's seat.Yes.So the problem isn't intelligence. Not at all. It's not an IQ problem. It's a muscle memory problem.Right. Your mouth, tongue, and vocal cords all need training. Think of it as gym training for your mouth. How does this connect to learning English success?Through retention. If you only read words, your brain remembers them passively. But when you say them, your body remembers, too. That doubles your retention.Oh, it's like playing the guitar. The first time you're really clumsy. After practicing a hundred times, you simply pick it up and your hands move automatically.Perfect example. That means learners don't actually lack vocabulary.Yeah, they lack the number of times they open their mouth and actually speak.Wow, the real issue isn't I don't know English, it's I don't practice using English.Oh, everything's starting to make sense now. Right. We've identified the problem clearly. So, what do we actually do?Simple Strategies to Think in EnglishLet's start with a super easy strategy you can practice right away. No preparation, no textbook, no stress.I like the sound of that already.Strategy number one: name objects around you in English. Just look around and say what you see. Desk, door, window, laptop, ceiling, floor. That's it?Simple doesn't mean useless. After that, upgrade to short sentences. For example, "This is my desk," or "My desk is by the door and there's a laptop on it."Nice. Now we have a complete sentence. And here's the important part. When you do this, you're building a direct link between objects and English words. Without translating through your native language. So you're training your brain to recognize English instantly.Exactly. You're helping your brain get used to English as a natural response, not a translated one.Okay, that's actually smart. If we can name simple objects around us, the next step feels very natural. You mean talking to yourself?Yes, talking to yourself. It's our next strategy.Yes, it's powerful. Say things like, "Okay, I need to take a shower." Or, "What should I eat today?" Or even, "Why am I so tired?"I ask that last question in French every morning. This technique is called internal rehearsal, practicing language inside your own safe space.Meaning no one interrupts, no one corrects you, no one judges you.Exactly. You're creating a 100% safe speaking environment. And when your brain feels safe, it learns faster.Well, it's that simple. Just overcome hesitation and you can do it. No shame, no money, no stress.I love strategies like that. Simple, practical, and you can start thinking more in English. You know, talking to yourself is a great part, but it doesn't end there. The real shift happens when your brain starts processing English directly without translating. All right, Gwen. I can't wait. What's the next strategy?

    Vol306.日常英语学习House, Apartment, and Home

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888An apartment is not a piece of land. It's just a piece of structure. I would like to own something real. Not something that floats in the air.Lucas, come with me. We need to look at these numbers again. I think today is the day. I feel it in my heart. Maybe, just maybe, we finally reached our goal after all this time. Do you think so?All right, love. I have all the documents here. The savings account records, the salary balance, the list of expenses, even the little notebook where we wrote every coin we saved. It feels unreal. For 2 years, we refused eating outside. We walked instead of taking taxis. We avoided vacations. And now, here we are.You know, I am proud of ourselves. Yeah.Yes. Me, too. I am so happy. We sacrificed so much. Do you remember when I wanted a new phone and you wanted a new computer? But we said no. We said, "Our house first." Remember? We held on to that dream like life depended on it. And now, these numbers, Lucas, look. Look carefully. We finally have enough for the initial payment of either a house or an apartment. What? Wait. You mean... Oh God. We did it? After all those nights eating pasta because it was cheap. After saying no to cinemas, no to restaurants, no to unnecessary clothes. After all that effort, we really made it. Did we?Yes, honey. We did it. We saved enough. For real. This is not a dream anymore. This is our new life right in front of us. I feel like crying. I feel like jumping. I feel... I feel like hugging you forever. I am so happy. Come here. Let me hold you. I am proud of us. Of you. Of your patience, your discipline, your strength. We talked about this so many times imagining our home. A place that belongs to us. And now comes the big question. A house or an apartment? We have to choose.I knew it. I knew you would go there fast. You want a house. I know that. You imagine a big backyard, a dog running, a grill, maybe a garden, a big parking space. But, Lucas, I have to tell you, a house is expensive. The maintenance, the repairs, the taxes, everything costs more.Of course, I know that. But a house gives us space, Emma. Real space. We could have our own yard, our privacy. No noisy neighbors. No elevators breaking every month. No rules about pets or music. A house feels like freedom. I dream of waking up and hearing birds, not people fighting in the hallways or footsteps from upstairs. That's an idea I hate.Yeah, I get it. Space is nice. Yes. But think of safety. An apartment often has security, cameras, guards, controlled access. We could feel safer at night, traveling, working. And cleaning a house is a big job. We are only two. An apartment is easier, faster, more manageable for our time and lifestyle.Easy, yes. But small, confined, limited. What if we want a family one day? Kids need the space to run, to play, to fall without hitting a neighbor's door. A house gives life room to grow.I understand. But an apartment gives life stability. Lower cost, fewer repairs, heating and cooling are easier. We could use the saved money to travel someday. Just imagine. Imagine us in Paris or walking on some beach with drinks in our hands. An apartment could help us live more, not work only to pay bills.I totally understand. But we're going for the house anyway.

Vol305.日常英语学习Why is the Chicago River GREEN

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888 Introduction & Chicago River TraditionHello everybody. It's Arian Laginga and welcome back to my YouTube channel. Today we are in the Windy City in Chicago and today we are celebrating St. Patrick's Day. Look at the beautiful green river behind me. They dyed this river green this morning. It used to be blue, but now it's green. The first vocabulary word is dye. This means to change the color of something using a liquid or a substance. And we can use this word in four different ways: with your hair, clothes, food, or in this instance, the Chicago River. For example, they dyed the river green this morning.I dyed my hair last week.In the 1960s, it was super common to tie-dye your shirts. We dyed the frosting on the cake red. Now, if you're writing this word or spelling it, try not to confuse it with the worddie, which means to stop living. Use the correct word dye, which means to change colors. For example, you wouldn't say, "I died my hair." You would say, "I dyed my hair with a Y."Right now, the river looks like a giant green highlighter. It's honestly one of the coolest traditions in the US. A tradition is something a group of people have done for a long time. So, this city has been dyeing the river green for more than 60 years. And why green? Well, green is the color of Ireland, and over 400,000 people come to Chicago to see this. What is St. Patrick's Day?Now, what is St. Patrick's Day? St. Patrick's Day celebrates the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. This was originally a religious holiday, but now it celebrates Irish culture all around the world. In many cities, people celebrate with parades, music, Irish food, green clothing, and decorations. Chicago actually has one of the most famous celebrations in the world, including the Chicago St. Patrick's Day parade.Interviews:Arian: Lauren, how do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day?Lauren: I just like to have fun and like I go over the top. You know, my great grandma was from Ireland and my great grandpa. I don't know if this is how they would like to celebrate it, but I'm definitely having a good time.Arian: Hi, Ellen. How are you celebrating St. Patty's Day?Ellen: I just ate like 30 Tostito pizza rolls and they were delicious. And I'm out with my friends, all my girlfriends here and we were out on a trolley earlier and it's a good time.A lot of people come here during St. Patrick's Day to be on the river. They have kayaks, canoes, so you can really enjoy the Green River. One fun activity you can do this St. Patrick's Day is go on a boat ride in Chicago. It costs around $45 per person, but you'll have amazing views of the city, the architecture, and the Green River. Wearing Green & Leprechaun FolkloreToday, people are dressed in the color green. But why green? There's actually a funny reason for this. In American culture, if you don't wear green on St. Patrick's Day, you get pinched. Yes, pinched. Basically, when you pinch someone, you grip their skin with your thumb and your index finger. But since I'm not wearing green today, I might get pinched. Ouch. That's why almost everyone today is dressed in green shirts, green hats, green beads, and sometimes even green hair. Why do we do this? Well, it comes from a bit of folklore stories that are passed down through generations. The legend says that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns. Invisible means you cannot be seen. If a leprechaun can see you, he might pinch you. So, people started pinching each other as a playful reminder to wear green, so the leprechauns wouldn't get them.Interviews:Arian: Why do people wear green? Like you're all dressed up in green. Your hair, is that your real hair?Interviewee 1: No. You know, I just wanted to like just live, laugh, love, have a good time.Interviewee 2: Well, I mean, I got these overalls at Goodwill. But I got this from Barstool. I go to Dayton. We do this theme where it's like 40s at 4:00 a.m. when we do St. Patty's Day. I got this from a bar like years ago. But well, no, no, no, no. One of these I got from the parade. The other one I lost, but this one I'm staying at my friend's girlfriend's place and like let me have this for free. So, I'm definitely in the holiday mood.Arian: Can you tell me a little bit more about what you're wearing?Interviewee 3: Sure. I have a top hat from Amazon, jacket from Amazon, fake blouse from Amazon, some extra large pants from Amazon, and then a Celine purse and a Chanel necklace. Not from Amazon.Arian: Do you believe in leprechauns? Do you think they're real?Interviewee 3: 100%. I am a leprechaun. So, I believe that they're real. I met a guy from Ireland. He was from Charlie and now he lives in Cork, Ireland. And I asked him about the leprechaun thing. You know, I think it's just a thing where if a husband doesn't come home, they just blame it on the leprechaun. You know what? The leprechaun did XYZ and that's why I didn't come home like to take care of the kids or something.

    Vol304.日常英语学习Don't Quit in the Quiet

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey guys, welcome back to Pod Chill. I'm Gwen. And I'm Leo.All right, be honest with me. How many times have you started a new goal, felt like a superhero for exactly 3 days, and then just completely stopped?Ugh, the classic 3-day motivation. We've all been there.Today's topic sounds simple, but honestly, it's incredibly personal. Yeah, today we are talking about quitting, but we're not talking about a big dramatic breakdown. We're talking about the quiet quitting, the "I'll just do it tomorrow" that slowly turns into never.Exactly. People love to think they quit because they're lazy, but that's usually not true. We quit because the progress becomes invisible. The journey gets boring, and suddenly your brain tells you, "Maybe this just isn't for me."So, today we're going to break down the actual stages of starting a goal, why the middle part is the hardest, and a few real practical tips to keep you going when you want to give up. Don't stress if you miss a word, just relax and vibe with us. And make sure to stick around until the very end because we have a vocabulary recap waiting for you. If you enjoyed Pod Chill, don't forget to like, subscribe, and join our family. All right, you ready? Let's get into it.Stage One: The Beginning EnergySo, whenever we set a new goal, any goal, there's usually a pattern, and it happens to almost everyone. But really, in this first stage, everything feels possible. You feel excited, motivated, and full of hope. And I think most people are completely sincere in that moment. Like, they're not pretending. Not at all. They genuinely mean it when they say, "This time I'm serious." I say that every January.Everyone does because in the beginning, the goal still lives in your imagination, and your imagination is very generous.Yeah, it's very generous. In your imagination, you already speak perfect English. You're confident, calm, and fluent. Your future self has great posture. And somehow you're at an international party chatting effortlessly in English with your American idol. Or suddenly, you're sitting in a glass cabin doing simultaneous translation like a complete pro. Always. This sounds great, actually. So, what's the problem? The problem is that feeling is beautiful, but also a little dangerous.Dangerous? How?Because many people think that strong beginning energy is proof that they will keep going. But excitement is not the same as endurance. Starting strong is lovely. Staying strong is different.Stage Two: The Messy MiddleExactly. And that brings us to the next part, the part where things start to get hard.Okay, how hard are we talking?Well, the beginning was exciting, but the middle is repetitive. Oof. You keep showing up, but you're not really seeing much. At first, you feel motivated, then normal, then bored, and then suddenly, you're just staring at your goal like it personally offended you. Like, why are you still here? What do you want from me?Yes. In this stage, people start to delay and start avoiding, then tell themselves, "I'll do it later." Later never quite arrives. Right. The thoughts start coming in. "Maybe this just isn't for me. Maybe I'm not cut out for this."Okay, but isn't that just being honest with yourself? Like, maybe the goal really isn't right.Sometimes, yes, but most of the time it's not honesty, it's just exhaustion mixed with a little disappointment. That's different. Exactly, it's completely different. And the sad truth is, this is exactly where most people stop. They don't quit at the finish line, they give up right here in the messy middle. And that's what makes it so heartbreaking. Because if they just held on a little longer, they would realize there is actually a stage three.

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Conversation 1: The House TourSo, Mr. Thomas, we've just finished the tour of this lovely home. What do you think?Well, first of all, thank you for showing me the house. It's a beautiful place. And I can see that it's in good condition. The neighborhood is quiet. And I like the big windows in the living room. It gives the house a lot of natural light.Yes, that's one of the best features of this house. Many buyers love the open space and the natural lighting. The large windows make the living room feel bright and welcoming. That's true. I also like the modern kitchen. The cabinets are nice. And I love the marble countertops. The backyard is also great. Especially with the small patio area. But, to be honest, I think the house is a little too small for my family.I see. Well, can you tell me more about what you need?Sure, I have a wife, two kids, and a big dog. We need at least four bedrooms. One for me and my wife, one for each of my children, and a guest room for when family visits.Well, that makes sense. This house has only three bedrooms. So, it might not be the best fit for your needs. Don't worry, I understand.Exactly. Also, the living room is a bit small. My kids love to play and we like to have family movie nights. We need a bigger space for that.Understood. And what about the backyard?I love that it has a yard, but I was hoping for something a little bigger. My dog loves to run around and my kids enjoy playing outside. So, a larger backyard would be perfect for us.For sure. Got it. So, you need a bigger house with at least four bedrooms, a spacious living room, and a larger backyard. Anything else?Yes, I also want a house with a garage. This house only has a driveway. But I prefer a closed garage to keep my car safe and to store some tools and equipment. That's a great point. A garage can be very useful, especially for extra storage. Let me ask you, what is your budget for the new home? I'd like to know.I was thinking of something around $400,000. But if I find the perfect home, I might be willing to go a little higher. That's helpful to know. I have a few houses in mind that might be a perfect fit for your family. One of them has four bedrooms, a big backyard, and even a two-car garage. It is beautiful. Would you like to see it?Yes, that sounds much better for my family. When can we see it?I can normally schedule a visit for tomorrow afternoon. But since you look really interested in this house, I can show it to you right now.Really? Oh, that's amazing. Thank you so much. Let's go then.(Later)So, Mr. Thomas, we've just finished touring the house. What do you think?Wow, I have to say this house is exactly what I was looking for. It's spacious, modern, and has everything my family needs. The living room is huge, the backyard is perfect, and I love that there's a two-car garage.I'm glad you like it. This house has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a big open kitchen. It was built just five years ago. So, everything is in great condition. Plus, it's in a very safe and quiet neighborhood.Yes, I noticed that. The streets are clean and I saw a park nearby. I like it. That's perfect for my kids and my dog.Exactly. Families love this area because there are good schools, parks, and shopping centers nearby. Now, let's talk about the details of purchasing this home. The listed price is $395,000.That's within my budget. But tell me, what is the process of buying the house? I want to understand everything before making a decision. Please.Of course. The home buying process usually follows these steps. First, you submit an offer to the seller, me, with a price you're willing to pay. Sometimes, buyers negotiate the price. Now, if the seller accepts your offer, you need to make a down payment. This is an initial amount of money to secure the house. Usually, it's 10 to 20% of the total price. Then, if you are financing the home with a loan, you'll need to get a mortgage approval from the bank. Then, a professional inspects the house to make sure everything is in good condition. Finally, you sign the legal documents, pay the remaining amount, or finalize the mortgage, and receive the keys to your new home.

    Vol302.日常英语学习Full Ski Trip Vlog

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey everybody, it's Arianita Lringa and welcome back to my YouTube channel. Today we're doing a special kind of video. I'm doing a ski trip vlog. Yes, I'm here in Denver, Colorado at Copper Mountain. Let's start skiing.Getting Ready: Tickets and RentalsBefore skiing on the mountain, you need to buy a lift ticket. Yes, I bought a 4-day pass and that cost me around $400. This is my little ID card. It's my lift ticket and it'll go right in my jacket and I'll scan it before getting on the lift. And where do I buy a lift ticket? This is the correct place. Yes, you'll walk inside, go to the customer service desk, and they have several different options like a 1-day pass, a 2-day pass, a 4-day pass, or a season pass. After picking up your lift ticket, you need to go and rent skis, or a snowboard. Over here, they have different snowboards. They have junior, basic, performance, and demo. I do not know how to snowboard. So, today I'm going to rent a pair of skis. Over here, you're going to rent some skis, poles, a helmet, as well as boots. This is the place to grab your ski boots or your snow boots for snowboarding. So, they have different kinds of boots for skis versus a snowboard. I'm a 9.5 or a 10, but I usually go with a 10 because I wear thick socks when I ski.As you can see, they have different sizes of skis. Some are shorter and some are taller. I picked up my skis yesterday. And normally, if you do ski, they should go up to your chin level.Snowboarding vs. Skiing Stances Snowboarding is way different than skiing. For example, you have two skis, one for each leg, but with snowboarding, your feet are sideways on one board. And when you rent a snowboard, they'll ask you how you want your foot position. For example, they'll say,"Are you a regular or are you goofy?"* Goofy: If they ask you if you're goofy, that doesn't mean you make a lot of jokes. No, they're talking about the foot position. If you're goofy, your right foot will be at the front.Regular: If you're regular, your left side will be at the front. Are you goofy or are you regular? Let me know down below. These are my rental skis, as well as my poles. And I'm going to leave them over here by the racks to show you guys around the ski resorts. When you rent skis, how do you know which skis are yours? Because look, there are snowboards here, multiple skis, and sometimes it could be difficult to remember. Well, when you rent skis, you have your initials. My initials are a D. So that way I'll remember them. And I'll also remember the color of my skis as well as the color of my straps, which are red. Let's leave these skis here on the rack. Let's walk around a little bit before we go ski.Exploring Copper MountainCopper Mountain, Colorado is one of the most popular ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains. It's about 75 miles west of Denver and sits at 9,700 ft. It's known for great snow and beautiful views. With over 150 trails and 24 lifts, there's something here for everyone. Copper Mountain also hosts international competitions and is a popular training spot for Olympic athletes. This place is not only known for skiing or snowboarding. No, they have many different restaurants or cafes in case you get hungry and if you do get cold. So, let's go ahead and check out a coffee shop. Something I've noticed here at this ski resort is that the prices are a bit expensive. For example, if I want to buy a bottle of water, this will cost $7. Would you pay $7 for a bottle of water? Let me know down below. At this resort, they also have a huge store that sells jackets, vests, hats, just in case if you forgot anything at home or in case you just want a souvenir from Copper Mountain. Something that I've noticed here at this store is they sell oxygen. So, I'm going to ask Emma. So, why do people buy oxygen here?Emma: Yeah, honestly, we get a lot of people who are coming from lower elevation and literally the air is thinner, so they can get elevation sickness or they find it hard to breathe. It takes a couple days to get used to it. I don't know if this actually does anything, but it does make them feel less like they're dying.Gearing Up and Hitting the SlopesAfter giving you guys a tour around this ski resort, I think we're ready to hit the slopes. But first, I need to put on my ski boots as well as change my gloves because I have heated gloves. And the last thing is a helmet. So, let's go inside and change. This area is where you can put on your ski gear, like your snowboarding boots or your ski boots. If you guys need extra help with your skis or snowboards, then you can come to the tuning center where they have a full tune. They'll give your skis or a snowboard a hot wax. They can also bind your skis and they can also adjust them as well. And if you already know how to adjust your skis or your snowboard, you can just come over here and adjust them with a screwdriver.I changed into my ski boots. I finally am wearing gloves that are nice and warm. I have a helmet on. And I also have my ski goggles. I think it's time to hit the slopes. Let's start skiing. Today is one of the coldest days. It's 18°F. The snow is so fresh and light. We call this powder, which means it's perfect for skiing.I'm carrying my skis and poles and I'm heading to the lift line. Right now, I'm waiting in line to go up the lift. As you can see, the line is pretty long. But that's okay. We have time to wait. And before getting on the lift, you have to remember to bring your lift ticket or your ID card. And I have that right in my pocket to scan. We are getting on the ski lift. You let the chair come behind you. Then you sit down.I am sitting on a chairlift. This is a safety bar so I don't fall off the chairlift. And this is a blue covering to protect me from the snow and the wind. This chairlift is very nice. You have a beautiful view of the trees, of skiers, and the snow. And it's very safe and it takes about 5 minutes to get to the very top of the mountain. I just went up the ski lift. That's the ski lift. And a ski lift takes you all the way up to the top of the mountain. And this is the unloading area. As you can see, snowboarders and skiers are unloading and they're going on to their trails.

    Vol301.日常英语学习Speak with Confidence

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888What's up everyone? Welcome back to Podcast and Chill. I'm Leo.And I'm Gwen. This is our little space for learning English. No stress here, just real talks.Today we're talking about something I'm not great at. Walking into a room full of people......and feeling like you're on the outside looking in.Exactly. My brain immediately goes, "Don't say anything stupid. Just stay quiet."And what happens next?I say nothing. Then I leave thinking, "Why didn't I just talk to them? It's the worst."That's exactly what we're talking about today. How to speak with confidence. But Gwen, here's the weird part. The more I want to be confident, the more tense I get. So why does trying make us freeze? That's the big question, isn't it? Well, we're getting into that. We'll look at what's going on inside our heads and how to change it in simple ways.By the way, this episode is B1 level English. So, if you hear new words, don't panic. We'll break down key vocabulary in our English word journey at the end. For now, just listen and let it flow. You don't need to catch everything. It'll come naturally. All right, ready to talk confidently? Let's do this. So Gwen, do you ever join a conversation but just can't focus? Like your body's in the room nodding and smiling, but your mind's somewhere else.Oh, I know that feeling. It happens to me sometimes.Right? I just don't know why that happened. It's like there's this force or voice controlling my mind. It keeps whispering things to me while everyone else is talking.Whispering what? So, every time I'm about to speak, it shuts me down with something like, "Don't say that. Nobody cares. Just stay quiet. It's safer."Uh-huh. While that voice is whispering, what's happening in the real conversation? It keeps moving without me. I'm standing there like a garden statue, watching life move past me while I'm just frozen.Well, Leo, that means you're actually having two conversations at once. Two at the same time. Whoa.Yeah. So, there's one conversation happening out loud with people. Meanwhile, the other is inside your head with yourself.Hm, feel like I'm arguing with myself more than I'm talking to anyone.I know, but that's normal. You probably think that voice is there because you have nothing to say, right?I mean, yeah, it feels that way sometimes. But that's not true. You do have things to say. The problem is you're too busy thinking about whether you should say something or not.And by the time I decide to speak, the moment's gone.Exactly. The conversation already moved on and you're still stuck on the last topic.True. It's so exhausting. So where does this voice even come from? Like who invited it?Well, it comes from caring too much about what other people might think. Might. Key word. Half the time they're not even thinking about me.Yeah, in your head though. What if I say something wrong? What if they think I'm weird? What if I sound stupid?Stop reading my diary. Seriously, I ask myself those exact questions every single time.Right. So, when you walk into a conversation with your mind full of those thoughts......it makes you feel so timid before you even open your mouth.Exactly. But you're not really a shy person. You're just letting that voice run the show. And when that voice runs the show, there's no room left to actually listen.Bingo. You spend so much time watching yourself that you can't be there with people. So, I'm basically watching a movie of myself instead of being in the actual scene.Yep. Your attention should be on the people you talk to, not on the voice in your head putting you down. But Gwen, it's so hard to stop. It just turns on by itself.I know. The worst part is that those negative thoughts create what I call a mental wall.A mental wall.

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Stop right there. Look at me when I'm talking to you. Don't just walk away like that. Why do you act like I don't exist? I'm your father and lately it feels like you don't respect me anymore.I'm not trying to ignore you. I'm just tired of having the same conversation again and again. Every time we talk, it turns into an argument. And honestly, I don't want that right now. That's exactly what I mean. You avoid me. You don't listen. You don't respond properly. This is not how a son should behave. When I talk, you should pay attention, not act like it doesn't matter.I do listen. I just don't agree with everything you say. And when I try to explain myself, you don't really listen either. It always feels like your opinion is the only one that matters.Because I have more experience. I've lived more. I know how things work. You're still young. You don't understand life yet. And I'm trying to guide you before you make mistakes. But that's the problem. You don't guide me. You control everything. There is a difference between helping someone and deciding everything for them.I'm not controlling you. I'm protecting you. The world is not easy. And if I don't teach you discipline, no one will.Protection shouldn't feel like pressure all the time. Sometimes it feels like I can't even think for myself without you correcting me.So now I'm the problem. After everything I've done for you, after all the sacrifices, you're telling me I'm the problem.I didn't say you are the problem. I'm saying the way you treat me sometimes feels like I'm not allowed to be myself. That's not true. I just expect respect. Basic respect. That's all I'm asking for.Respect goes both ways. It's not just about me listening to you. It's also about you listening to me.I do listen to you. You just don't like what I say, so you call it not listening. No, you hear me, but you don't really understand me. You already have your answer before I even finish speaking. You've changed a lot. Before you used to listen. You used to respect me. You used to care about what I said. Now it feels like you don't care at all.I didn't change. I just started thinking for myself. And when I do that, you don't like it because sometimes your decisions don't make sense. And I can see where they will lead you. I don't want you to fail. But it's my life. Even if I fail, I need to learn from my own mistakes, not just follow everything you say.And what if your mistakes destroy your future? What if one bad decision changes everything? You don't think about that.I do think about that all the time, but I can't live my life based only on fear. It's not fear. It's reality. Life is hard. And if you don't understand that now, you will suffer later.I already feel pressure every day from school, from life, from everything. And when I come home, I feel even more pressure from you.I push you because I believe in you. I know you can do better. I know you can be more. And I don't want you to waste your potential.

    Vol299.日常英语学习From Mud Hut to Skyscraper

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Imagine being told that you were born to fail. That because you grew up in a tiny village with no money, your dreams were, well, nonsense. That is exactly what they told Patrick. But today, we're following a journey that proves the doubters wrong. It's a story about a village boy who went from washing greasy dishes to owning a skyscraper. I'm Marco, and today we're doing more than just storytelling. We're going to dive into the heart of this story and pull out the powerful English vocabulary you need to tell your own success story.I'm Emma, and stick around because by the end of this episode, you'll not only feel inspired, but you'll have leveled up your English with some really advanced, natural expressions.Chapter 1: The Dusty VillageThe story begins in a place called Oak Ridge. It was dusty, it was quiet, and for Patrick's father, the work was brutal. Let's dive into Chapter 1.In the dusty village of Oak Ridge, life was simple but hard. Most people were expected to live and die in the same small houses they were born in. But a boy named Patrick was different. He didn't want to follow the dusty path of everyone else. He wanted to see the world. Patrick was the only child of Maria and Thomas. His father was a quiet man who spent his days breaking stones at a nearby quarry. His hands were covered in cracks and calluses from years of brutal work. His mother, Maria, worked just as hard washing clothes and cleaning houses for wealthier families. Their home was a tiny one-room hut with a leaky roof and mud walls. But for Patrick, it was the starting point of a great journey. While other children played in the dirt, Patrick would sit at the local tea stall, staring at the old crackling television. He saw images of glass skyscrapers and glittering cities. To him, those images weren't just a dream. They were his future. By the time he was 10, Patrick had one goal: to go abroad. To him, that word meant a life where his mother didn't have to wash other people's clothes and his father didn't have to break stones. One evening by the village pond, he shared his dream with his friends. "I'm not going to work at the quarry," Patrick said firmly. "I'm going to go abroad, study at a big university, and live in a building that touches the clouds."His friends didn't cheer. They laughed. "Abroad? You?" The group went silent. Then Leo, one of his classmates, said to him, "Dreaming is for rich people, Patrick. Look at us. We were born for the quarry and the fields." Leo sighed and looked at Patrick's old, dusty feet. "Your father can't even buy you new shoes. How do you expect to buy a ticket to the other side of the world? Stop talking nonsense and face reality."The words hurt, but they didn't stop him. Patrick's teacher, Mr. Palai, was the only one who believed in him. He often lent Patrick books and told him, "Don't let them dim your light. Listen to the voice that tells you what you can do." Every night, lying on a thin mat on the dirt floor, Patrick would look through the small window at the stars. He imagined himself flying through them, leaving the dust of the village behind. He didn't stop dreaming. He just learned to keep his dreams a secret.Vocabulary Discussion: "Brutal"Wow, Emma, that description of Patrick's father really paints a picture. Working at a stone quarry for years. The story calls it brutal work.It sounds exhausting. Brutal. Let's practice the pronunciation: Bru-tal. It's a short word, but it carries a lot of weight, doesn't it?It really does. When we say something is brutal, we mean it is extremely cruel, harsh, or violent. It's work that breaks the body. There is no comfort in it.Exactly. It's not just hard work. A long day at the office might be hard, but working in the hot sun, breaking rocks with your hands, that is brutal. We use this in daily life, too, and not just for work. For example, if the weather is minus 20° and the wind is blowing, you could say, "The winter cold today is absolutely brutal."Or imagine a professional athlete. After a very, very difficult training session where they are completely exhausted, they might tell their coach, "That was a brutal workout." So, if something is brutal, it's so tough that it's almost painful to endure. And that is exactly what Patrick wanted to save his father from.Chapter 2: The Journey AbroadYears passed, but Patrick's fire never went out. While Leo and the others spent their evenings resting, Patrick stayed up with the books Mr. Palai lent him. His hard work finally paid off. Against all odds, Patrick won a scholarship to a university in a famous city across the ocean. The day he left Oak Ridge was quiet. His father handed him a small bag of coins—savings from years of breaking stones. His mother cried as she hugged him, her hands still smelling of soap from washing clothes. Patrick promised them, "I will come back for you."When Patrick stepped off the plane, his heart raced. The city was exactly like the images on the old tea stall television. The buildings were so tall they seemed to touch the stars, and the streets were filled with thousands of people. But for the first time, Patrick felt small. In Oak Ridge, he was the dreamer. Here, he was just a stranger with a strange accent and old clothes.Life abroad was not a movie. It was a struggle. His scholarship covered his classes, but he had no money for food or a proper bed. To survive, Patrick found a part-time job at a busy city restaurant. While other students went to parties, Patrick spent his nights washing greasy dishes until his hands were raw, just like his father's.During the day, he sat in the back of the lecture halls. He was often tired and hungry. Sometimes when the other students spoke fast, he couldn't understand them. He felt self-conscious about his background. He remembered Leo's voice saying, "People like us don't belong here."But Patrick didn't give up. He used his work at the restaurant as a second school. He listened to how the customers talked. He practiced their phrases while he mopped the floors. He wasn't just studying books anymore; he was studying the world. He lived in a tiny cold room, and every night he would look out his window at the city lights. He was exhausted and his back ached from the heavy lifting, but he wasn't breaking stones in Oak Ridge. He was exactly where he said he would be. He was finally on the other side of the world, and he was just getting started.Vocabulary Discussion: "Stepped off" & "Mopping"Wow, Patrick finally made it. I can almost see him standing there at the airport. The story says, "When Patrick stepped off the plane, his heart raced." I loved that phrasal verb, stepped off. It sounds so much more alive than just saying he left the plane. It's that exact moment your foot touches the ground in a new place.Exactly. You can step off a bus, step off a train, or even step off a curb onto the street. It's a very common, natural way to describe exiting a vehicle, right? Imagine you were visiting London for the first time. You might say, "The moment I stepped off the train, I saw Big Ben. It marks the beginning of an adventure."But the adventure wasn't all glitter and lights for Patrick. He had to work. The story says he practiced English while he mopped the floors. Now, Emma, some people might confuse mopping with sweeping, right?

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey everyone, welcome back to Podcast and Chill. I'm Gwen. And I'm Leo. And yes, seriously, chill is literally in the name. Sit back and relax.Especially because learning a foreign language already puts enough pressure on your brain.Oh, absolutely. I once spent 30 minutes typing a 15-word message in French.15 words. Let me guess. Type, delete, and type again.Pretty much.I'm sure a lot of our friends know that feeling. But once I had an argument with my French friend, and somehow my French just worked. So, one time you stressed over a message, and another time you spoke well because you didn't care.Yep. It's like the good version of empty head, full mouth. Maybe language learners need that more instead of head full, mouth on mute. That's what today's episode is about. Stop thinking, start speaking. We're talking about why it's hard to communicate in a foreign language and some simple tools and habits that help you improve your speaking. No boring textbook tips, just real life ideas that actually work. Before we start, leave a comment with your name, where you're from, and why you're learning English. We'd love to hear from you.And if you stress about your level, don't. Today's episode is B1, but strong beginners are very welcome, too. We'll also go over some key vocabulary at the end, nice and slow, so stay with us.All right, let's get started. The Coffee DisasterSo, I have to tell you about a small coffee disaster I had.Gwyn and disaster. That already sounds interesting. Go on.A few years ago, I traveled to another country. At that time, I was learning the local language.Oh, and you tried to use it during the trip.Of course, I wanted to buy a coffee, so I went into a cafe.Ordering coffee sounds simple. That's what I thought. I practiced the sentence in my head about 10 times. I felt ready. Very confident.I'm still waiting for the disaster.Well, when it was my turn, everything went wrong. You forgot the words.No. Worse. I said all the words clearly, just in the wrong order. I basically said coffee by me.Ah, so you didn't buy coffee. You offered yourself.Exactly. I was very embarrassed, but the cafe staff was kind. He smiled and helped me order.Or maybe you weren't the first person who tried to sell themselves for coffee.Probably not, but his kindness helped me feel confident again. Why Our Brains Shut Down: Fear & PerfectionismI'm glad. But why does our brain shut down like that? That seems pretty common among language learners.I thought about that, too. And I think there are two main reasons. All right, tell me.The first one is fear.Fear of making mistakes.Yes. And fear of people judging you or thinking you sound stupid. That fear usually comes from the past. That's right. Maybe a strict teacher corrected you in a hard way or friends laughed when you made a mistake. And after that, your mouth just closes. You stop trying. That makes sense. But not everyone has this kind of fear. Some people have a different problem.Really? What kind? They're not scared of mistakes. They're scared of not being perfect.Ah, perfectionism.Yes. Perfectionism means you want perfect grammar, perfect pronunciation, perfect everything. And you wait until the perfect sentence is ready.Right. But when you're finally ready, the moment is gone. It's like waiting for the perfect bus. You wait and wait, but all the other buses pass by and they all go to the same place. That's spot-on. You miss your chances because you're waiting for perfection. So, you stay silent.Yes. Fear and perfectionism. Those are the two big reasons people don't speak. That actually explains a lot. Before we continue, friends, if you're enjoying this episode, hit the like button and subscribe so you don't miss more useful conversations like this. Now stay with us because the next part is about simple things you can do to stop thinking and finally start speaking. What exactly can we do?

They get angry and they don't listen to each other. But there is a problem: while they are fighting, something very important happens. And when they finally realize it, it's too late. Let's listen to their conversation.Person A: Hey, excuse me. What are you doing? That is my suitcase.Person B: What? No, this is my suitcase. I just took it from the belt.Person A: You are wrong. I saw it first. It is black, medium size, and has a small scratch.Person B: Wait, what? My suitcase is also black, medium size, and it has a scratch, too.Person A: Then you are confused. This is mine. Look at the handle. It is a little broken. That is my suitcase.Person B: Oh, really? Because my suitcase also has a broken handle.Person A: This is impossible.Person B: Yes, this is very strange. Now look at the tag. It says Daniel. That is my name.Person A: Wait, let me see. Uh oh. Okay. But maybe that is an old tag.Person B: No, it's not old. I remember this suitcase very well. I traveled with it last month.Person A: Me too. I use this suitcase all the time.Person B: Then open it.Person A: No, you cannot open my suitcase.Person B: Then how can we know?Person A: Um, wait. I have a small red sticker on my suitcase.Person B: A red sticker?Person A: Yes, right here. Look.Person B: Oh, wait. My suitcase has a green sticker.Person A: Then this is not yours.Person B: Oh, no. I think I made a mistake.Person A: Yes, I think you did.Person B: I'm really sorry. Our suitcases look exactly the same.Person A: It's okay. It happens sometimes.Person B: I feel very embarrassed right now.Person A: Don't worry. At least now everything is clear. So, where are you going?Person B: I'm going to New York. And you?Person A: Wait, what? Me, too?Person B: Seriously? You're kidding, right?Person A: No, it's true. Same destination.Person B: Wow, that's crazy. Maybe we are on the same flight. Um, let me see. What is your flight number?Person A: My flight number it is AA245. And yours?Person B: Mine too. What a coincidence.Person A: No way. We were arguing and we didn't even check the time. What time is it now?Person B: Let me see. Oh no.Person A: What? What happened?Person B: The flight boards in 5 minutes.Person A: What? Let's go now.Airport Staff: Excuse me, gentlemen. You cannot stay here. You are blocking the way.Person A: Oh, I'm sorry. We were confused about a suitcase.Person B: Yes, sorry. We are going to flight AA245 to New York.Airport Staff: AA245. Yes, that flight already left.Person A: What? There's no way.Person B: No, that's not possible.Airport Staff: I'm sorry. The gate is closed. The plane is gone.Person A: We were here arguing. We didn't pay attention to the time because of the suitcase. We missed the flight.Person B: This is a disaster.Person A: Yes, the worst day.Airport Staff: You need to talk to the airline desk now.Person A: Ah, okay. Thank you.Person B: Well, at least now we have the correct suitcase.Person A: Yeah, but no flight.

    Vol296.日常英语学习From Pigsty to Spotless

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hello everyone and welcome to English Pod. My name is Marco. My name is Katherine. And today we're talking about someone who's very, very dirty. That's right. And actually, not only are we talking about something being dirty, but also that we want to clean everything.Okay. So, you'll learn how to call someone who likes clean things in English today. Let's take a listen to our dialogue.DialogueFriend: This bathroom is a pigsty. Helen, why do you keep flushing the toilet? What's wrong?Helen: I just can't stand it. It's really gross in here. There's a stain on the toilet seat and the floor was wet and slippery, so I cleaned it.Friend: You did what? Helen, I know it's gross, but I've seen many public washrooms that are much worse. Why are you cleaning the countertop? Are you out of your mind?Helen: I can't help myself. It's just so disgusting in here.Friend: Helen, this is not like your own bathroom. Just leave it to the cleaners.Helen: Okay, hang on. I'm just going to quickly wipe the sink and sweep the floor.Friend: You're such a neat freak. I'm out of here.Language TakeawayAll right, we're back. So, this girl was very much of a neat freak, and we're going to take a look at that word a little bit later on. Why don't we go back to the very beginning and take a look at some vocab on Language Takeaway. The first word we have here on Language Takeaway today is pigsty.Right. "This bathroom is a pigsty."Okay. So a pigsty is a place where pigs live. Now obviously, the bathroom is not really a place where pigs live. So if you call something a pigsty, you're saying that it's very dirty. You're saying it's disgusting. It's very, very dirty, like a pigsty. So actually, if you go to a farm and you see where all the pigs are, that is actually called a pigsty, right? There's mud and dirt, and yeah, that's a pigsty. So someone who is very, very dirty, you can also call a pig.Okay, now she was saying that the bathroom is so dirty and it's really gross in here.Okay, so gross means something she doesn't like. It's really dirty and, you know, makes her uncomfortable. So something that doesn't taste good, you can say it's gross. That's right. So I don't like to eat snake. I think eating snake is gross.Okay, very good. So something that is gross is something that's not really nice. Maybe it tastes bad or it smells bad. Something that is bad in general.Okay. So she went on to talk about the toilet seat and that there was a stain on the toilet seat.Okay, a stain is usually a bad thing. It means that there's a color or a mark that's permanent or maybe can be washed away on something. So, in this case, the toilet seat has a mark on it. Maybe it's brown or yellow. But I can also say, um, I was drinking wine and I spilled the wine on my shirt, and it left a stain. So, now there's always this red part on my shirt. It won't go away.Okay. So, a stain is a mark that usually won't go away.

    Vol295.日常英语学习Stop Translating in Your Head

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey everyone, welcome back to Learning English Podcast. I'm Leo.And I'm Gwen. Great to have you with us today. So Leo, do you have anything interesting to share today?Oh, yes. I was talking to a foreign friend yesterday. He's learning English, but he has some problems with speaking.Let me guess. He has trouble speaking, but he can read and listen well, right? How did you know, Gwen? He said, "My brain is fast when I listen, but when I speak, it just dies."Uh, yes. The classic brain shutdown. Many English learners struggle with that.He told me he keeps translating in his head. He thinks in his mother tongue, French, and then translates word by word into English. And in the end, he can't say a single word in English. Right.Exactly.That's translation mode. Many learners fall into this trap.I realized he's not alone. A lot of learners feel the same way.Yes, Leo. So, today we're here to answer one big question. How can you train your brain to think in English without translating first? That's an important question, Gwyn. This episode might be a bit longer, but it's packed with key ideas and practical tips you can actually use. It's designed for B1 learners, but strong beginners can follow along, too. We'll explain useful vocabulary and recap everything at the end.All right, ready to stop translating and start thinking in English?Let's do it.Have you ever had this moment, Leo? You can read books, watch videos, even listen to podcasts in a foreign language just fine. But the moment you need to speak, your brain suddenly goes offline.Oh, I know that feeling. That was exactly me when I started learning a new language. And many people learning English feel the same way.Yes, they often think, "I can't speak English well because I'm not good at languages." But that's a lie your brain tells you. If you can understand English when you read or listen, your brain is clearly not stupid.Exactly. Speaking problems are usually not about intelligence. They're about thinking habits and training. Most learners were trained to understand English, not to actually use it. They memorize grammar rules, learn long vocabulary lists, and do exercises where the answer is already there. So their brain becomes really good at recognizing English but terrible at producing it.Yes. Then comes the speaking moment. The brain says, "Okay, first think in your native language, then translate it into English, then check the grammar, then panic." That's four steps for one sentence. No wonder the brain freezes. It's like trying to run while doing math in your head. Of course, it feels slow, stressful, and exhausting. The real problem is not you're bad at English. It's your brain is using the wrong system.Your brain needs a new habit. Thinking directly in English, even if the English is simple or imperfect. And the good news is habits can be retrained. You don't need to be smarter. You just need to train differently. That means anyone can speak English fluently if they change the way they practice. I can't wait to know if we want our brain to think in English. What's the first step?Easy. You need to feed it first.Feed it like breakfast.Yep. English doesn't magically appear in your brain overnight. Your brain needs food. And that food is input.Input through your ears and your eyes. Listening and watching.Right. And here's the key point. The input must be easy and suitable.Yes. Many learners make the same mistake. They jump straight into very hard content and think, "It's okay. I'll get used to it." But instead of getting used to it, their brain just gives up and says, "Nope, too much. I'm out."That's why we recommend starting with easy English, even A1 level content. Some learners feel shy about that. They think A1 is too basic for me.But that step is incredibly important. Think of it like food. If the food is too heavy, your brain can't digest it.Easy English is like light, healthy food. It helps your brain get used to English sentence structures and the natural rhythm of the language. For listening, simple podcasts are amazing. For example, our learning English podcast. You hear common sentences again and again, and repetition is not boring. It's powerful.Exactly. Your brain starts to recognize patterns without translating. You know what? Music works really well, too. Especially songs with repetitive lyrics.Oh, that reminds me of my cousin.Your cousin?

    Vol293.日常英语学习Talk About Phobias

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hello everyone and welcome to English Pod. My name is Marco. My name is Katherine. And today we're talking about fear. That's right. Today we're going to talk about phobias. Different types of fears that you have. Many people are scared of different things and that's what we're going to talk about today.Okay. So let's listen to today's dialogue and find out what the people in our dialogue are very, very afraid of.DialoguePerson A: Are you excited about your trip next month?Person B: Yes and no. I can't wait to go to Europe, but at the same time, I'm terrified.Person A: Why?Person B: Well, I have aerophobia. I have a chronic fear of flying.Person A: Oh, really? I have an uncle who is also terrified of flying. It's not that bad, though. I mean, it is pretty scary to be up in this big machine flying through the air at 700 mph. I actually have arachnophobia.Person B: You're scared of spiders? I actually have two more phobias. Acrophobia and glossophobia.Person A: I guess that explains why you're afraid of flying. But public speaking is not that bad.Person B: Are you kidding? When I get on stage, my palms start to sweat. I get really nervous and I can hardly speak.Person A: Well, I must confess that I am a bit claustrophobic. I hate being in an elevator for more than 5 seconds.Person B: We are such weirdos, right?Language TakeawayAll right, we're back. So, let's take a look at those phobias on Language Takeaway. The first phobia that we have is called aerophobia. That's right. Aerophobia. And that means that you are scared of flying.Okay. So, we can tell because phobia means, you know, fear of something. But it's not just a fear. It means that if you go on an airplane, you get very very upset. You think that you're going to die. That's right.Okay. And so phobia is a very serious fear. But aero- is like a prefix. So aerophobia is a fear of going on airplanes. That's right. And another phobia that we have is arachnophobia. So again, as you see in the prefix, arachno- is related to a spider. That's right. So this comes from the origins of English. I'm not sure if it's Greek or Latin, but arachnophobia, like arachnid, has to do with spiders. So I'm afraid of spiders if I have arachnophobia. That is right. And now taking a look at two more types of phobias. Here we have acrophobia and glossophobia. So let's take a look at the first one. Acrophobia. So acrophobia. Acro- has to do with heights. So I don't like to be on tall buildings. I don't like to maybe look down from heights. That means I'm afraid of heights. That's right. You're afraid of being at a very high altitude. Acrophobia. Now, glossophobia is an interesting one because this one, you are scared of public speaking or you get very nervous when you're in front of a group of people, right? So, this is actually a very, very common fear. But if it's a serious fear, it's a phobia. So, glossophobia means that when you go in front of people, you get very very anxious, upset, your stomach hurts, you have wet hands. So, that's a very serious fear. That's right. And for our last phobia, we have claustrophobia. I think it is one of the most common ones. If you have claustrophobia, you're afraid of smaller tight spaces. That's right. So, people who suffer from claustrophobia don't like to be in small tight places like elevators for example, tunnels.Tunnels. Mhm. So, now you brought up an interesting point. Our last phobia we said claustrophobic and now we must make the difference between, for example, claustrophobia and being claustrophobic. So a phobia, you hear the ending -ia, claustrophobia is a noun. Okay, that means I can talk about "I have it. I have this fear." But when you're talking about the adjective, something that describes you, you would have to use the -ic ending. I'm claustrophobic. He is acrophobic. They are aerophobic.Okay, so that is the adjective form. So if I say I have arachnophobia, it means I have this fear, or I can say I am arachnophobic.Great. So this can be used for all other kinds of phobias. So when you learn those words remember that there are two different kinds. There's the -ia (phobia) which is the noun, and -ic which is the adjective. All right, let's listen to our dialogue again and we'll be back in a bit with Fluency Builder.

    Vol292.日常英语学习Small Habits for Real Progress

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Leo, have you ever looked back at your day and thought, "What did I actually do today?"You mean like nothing bad happened, no big mistakes, but nothing really moved forward either.Exactly. No dramatic failure, just another day gone. That sounds like wasting your life with no sound.Yes. It doesn't come with a loud crash. It comes from small habits repeated every single day. It's like one more click, one more scroll, one more later. And suddenly tomorrow becomes a habit. Not going to lie, but everyone's done that.Well, the most dangerous part isn't failure. Then what is it?It's the feeling that you're waiting for the right time. Waiting until you're less busy to study English. Waiting until you feel confident enough to start. Waiting until you're not tired to change.Yep. Yet the truth is we're not actually waiting. We're procrastinating.Exactly. Waiting without action is like sitting at a train station watching the board update again and again, but never buying a ticket.Yep. You feel ready. You feel close and that's the illusion. No ticket, no train. And while you're sitting there, time keeps moving. It never waits. So, today we're breaking down this waiting trap. Why it tricks you into thinking you're making progress and how to finally leave that station.Love this topic, Leo.And don't worry if you can't understand everything in this episode. Just stay with us until the end. We've prepared a PDS and a word journey guide to help you reflect on your habits, redesign your actions, and finally step onto your train. So, what are we waiting for? Let's begin. Before we talk about big goals or big failures, let's start with something much smaller. Not the dramatic mistakes, not the life-changing decisions. Just five more minutes.Really, Gwen? Just five more minutes? That doesn't sound much.Exactly. And it doesn't feel dangerous, right? One more scroll, one more video, one small task pushed to later.Yeah. None of that feels like ruining your life. And that's the trap. The trap of it's comfortable.Well, it does make sense to me. I mean, we all want everything to feel easy. How could it even be a trap?Oh, Leo, it's because small comfort now always feels better than long-term progress later.I see what's happening. Everything feels easy, so we tell ourselves, "Relax. You deserve a break. Start tomorrow."And tomorrow looks exactly like today.Yep. Individually, those moments look harmless. But together, they create something bigger.Sounds scary. So, what's that bigger thing? It's not some big collapse. It's quieter than that. A slow drift. That sounds deep. Not crashing, not burning out, just slowly drifting away from the person you said you wanted to become. So, you're not failing, you're just drifting.Exactly. And drifting is dangerous because a slow drift doesn't feel like danger. It feels familiar. It feels safe. And that's why you don't fight it.So drifting doesn't always look like laziness. No, sometimes it looks like effort. It looks like planning, researching, getting ready.Wait, that sounds confusing. How can drifting look like we're actually putting in effort?Drifting rarely looks like doing nothing. It often looks responsible, strategic, thoughtful. You feel busy. You feel productive. So busyness isn't the same as movement. That's right. And when activity replaces action, you end up trapped in the illusion of progress. That sounds a little too real.Yep. Sounds just like your old buddy Daniel.Oh yeah, Daniel. Always got a plan and a bunch of study stuff ready. But honestly, that sounds more organized than me, right? He looks so serious. Do you still remember how you met him 6 months ago?Well, I expected him to be speaking English with me, but it turned out he was still buried in all that study stuff. You see what I mean? He wasn't lazy. He just kept preparing, but never really started. No real conversations, no mistakes, no uncomfortable moments. So, he felt busy but wasn't actually moving.Exactly. He was getting ready to swim but never jumping in because jumping in is scary. And that's the problem. Planning feels like progress. But eventually, a perfect schedule just turns into a hiding spot. And it feels safe. Maybe too safe.Well, when repeated long enough, that spot becomes a cage. You don't even try to escape.A cage? Come on, how can a cozy plan become a cage?Tell me why not. At first, it feels safe, warm, inviting. You think, "I'm prepared. I'm organized."Yeah, that sounds comfortable.Exactly. Cozy even. But the danger is subtle. Slowly, the windows close, the light fades, the air feels heavier.Whoa. So, it's like a room that slowly shrinks around you.Yes. Comfort that lasts too long becomes chains you don't even notice. And the worst part, you don't even realize you're trapped. So, we are stuck in that cage, still holding on to our dreams and expectations that we will do something someday.Yes. And that's the tricky part. Dreams are like fruit sitting on a table. Bright, ripe, giving off a sweet, tempting aroma.Ah, so we just keep smelling it, enjoying the scent, but not actually eating it.Exactly. Every day we admire it from afar. We plan, we imagine, we savor the idea, but we never take action to peel it, to taste it, to enjoy it fully. And the longer we wait, the more it quietly rots slowly, almost without noticing. That sweet aroma fades. The colors dull. The fruit starts to decay.Wow. So, our dreams don't die because of failure. They die because we get stuck in comfort. Just smelling them every day instead of taking a bite.Exactly. The danger isn't dramatic failure. It's the slow drift. Day by day, they quietly eat away at the dreams we thought we'd reach.

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey Gwen, have you ever just been lying on the couch staring at the ceiling thinking about big dreams? Like building a whole empire?OMG, did you put a hidden camera in my house or something? No, I'm asking because I had an afternoon exactly like that.Oh, please. I don't stop at building an empire. In my mind, I'm also standing on a stage winning an award, giving the most inspiring speech ever. But in real life, we're just lying there scrolling Tik Tok until our thumb gets tired. Right.True. It's like two different people fighting inside one body. One side is ambitious Gwen, who wants success so badly. The other is lazy Gwen who just wants to sleep in.I know a lot of you feel the same way.Guys, if you feel discouraged because you think you're lazy, I just want to say you are not alone. Maybe you have a lot of big questions in your head right now. Why can we imagine success in such clear detail, but we can't even do something simple like open a book? Today we're sharing simple strategies to outsmart your brain and see results fast. You can just listen, relax, and still change your mindset. Are you ready, Leo?Ready. Let's start this journey to rewire your brain.First, I want to clear everyone else's name a little. Leo, do you really think we are born lazy?I'm pretty sure we are, Gwen. Sometimes I feel like I have a lazy gene that just waits for a chance to show up.Come on, put that negative thought away. Science shows that our brain is actually very responsible and it's not lazy in a bad way.Are you kidding me? It stops me from studying and tells me just go to sleep when I need to work. And you say it's responsible. It sounds strange, but it makes sense. You have to go back to prehistoric times for a minute. The human brain was designed with one main goal: help us survive. What does that have to do with lying on the couch and not studying English?Well, in ancient times, food was rare and danger was everywhere. To survive, the brain always tried to save energy. It keeps energy in case you suddenly need to run away from a tiger.Oh, so the brain sees energy as something very valuable and it doesn't want me to waste it on things that are not urgent for survival.Exactly. When you make a big plan, like 1,000 hours of speaking practice, your brain doesn't see career growth. It sees a huge overload and turns on the alarm. Danger. Too much energy. That explains a lot. Every time I open my study app, my eyes suddenly get sleepy, even if I just woke up.Yes. And it pulls you back to your phone because scrolling Tik Tok uses much less energy.Ah, and looking at a one-year goal feels like standing in front of a 42 km marathon.Yes, you're not scared of running. You're scared of running 42 km on the first day. That feeling is a real mental barrier. Just thinking about it makes me want to sleep to save energy. It's a great deal for my brain, but a disaster for my dreams. Right, Gwen?Yeah. Besides saving energy, there's another hidden enemy that is just as strong. It's called perfectionism.Oh, perfectionism. I'm the king of that. I always want everything to be perfect before I start. How does your perfectionism delay your study time?Well, I always tell myself I'll start when I feel fully ready. Sometimes I even wait for a perfect opportunity because I'm afraid to start. After everything is finally perfect, what do you do next? Then I feel too tired. So I tell myself I'll do it tomorrow with better energy. That's the trap. In reality, perfectionism is just fear of failure wearing a nice mask. What? I thought I was just someone with high standards. How is that fear of failure?Because you're afraid that if you start and don't do well, you'll have to admit you're not that good. Perfectionism doesn't make you better, Leo. It only makes you start later than everyone else.Oh. Oh, so my perfectionism was actually fear of failure pretending to be high standards.Yeah. Instead of waiting to be perfect, accept mistakes as part of growth. No one is born ready to run a marathon without falling.I get it now. So friends, from now on, you should allow yourself to be a bad beginner as long as you start. That's the first step to truly outsmart your brain. When we remove the pressure to be perfect, we finally have space to take action. So, what should we do next? I'm afraid the sofa will pull me back in again. We need action strategies. The first thing I want you to try is this: write small success stories. That sounds kind of big and serious. Do I need to sign a million dollar contract before I can call it success? Not at all. We often misunderstand what success really means. Our mistake is that we only recognize huge goals. For example, you probably write, "I will be fluent in English in one year." Right?

Or were you going somewhere alone? Tell me.I wasn't alone. I was meeting someone. I was spending time with a friend. We were talking and laughing. We weren't doing anything illegal. While you were walking near Central Avenue, a man reported that someone was stealing his cell phone and wallet. Were you standing close to him? Were you watching him?No, I wasn't standing near him and I wasn't watching him. I was focusing on my conversation. I didn't even notice anyone losing anything.Witnesses said you were looking around nervously. Why were you looking around like that? Were you waiting for the right moment?I wasn't waiting for anything like that. I was looking around because the street was busy. No way am I watching that. I don't understand why everyone is so excited about these films about vampires. It doesn't make sense.A: Of course it does. It's like a modern tale of Romeo and Juliet. You have a couple that is in love but can't be together because they are so different. Add in the fact the immortality and superhuman strength is really sexy. And there you have it. 获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey friends, welcome back to Pod Chill. I'm Leo.And I'm Gwen.Gwen, I feel a bit strange today. Since morning, my thoughts have been all over the place.Oh, right. You seem a little distracted. That's exactly it. I listen carefully when people talk, but when they finish, the meaning just slips away. Sometimes I remember the words, but my brain turns them into something else. What you're describing is super common. This isn't just your problem.Really?Yeah. A lot of people are dealing with that, too. A whole generation that struggles to stay focused. And that's why today's episode exists. We'll talk about why concentration feels so hard, why the mind feels tired even without heavy work, and most importantly, how we can gently improve focus. This episode is around B1 level and strong beginners can follow comfortably. We'll explain new words clearly and recap everything at the end. Before we start, I'll ask you one honest question. Why did you click on this episode today? And do you often feel distracted or mentally tired, too? Leave a comment and share your reason with us because your stories matter. What you said earlier actually helped me relax. I really thought this was just me being careless or slow. Most people start there. But the moment you hear the same story everywhere, it stops feeling personal.Yeah, now that I think about it, my friends sound exactly like me. They forget things mid-sentence and feel tired without doing much.Well, that similarity is the clue. When a lot of people struggle in the same way, there's usually a bigger reason behind it.H. So it's not weak focus, it's the environment we live in every day.Exactly. We live in a distracting environment that never really slows down. When I think clearly, I start to see why. My attention doesn't disappear by itself. It gets taken away. Right.Absolutely. They don't shout, but they quietly pull my attention all day. That's a good way to describe it.Notifications, social media, and short videos are like small thieves. They steal your attention little by little. At first, it feels harmless, but it adds up over time.I tell myself, I'll check one thing quickly. Then suddenly my brain jumps from one screen to another. And that jump puts the brain into reaction mode. Instead of choosing what to think about, the brain just responds. So I'm not really focusing. I'm just reacting again and again.Friends, what kinds of thieves do you usually face? Comment below and share with us.Let's see who faces them the most. All right. Now, we move to something important in how the brain works.Oh, yeah. I learned a fact about how the brain works, and it surprised me. The human brain was designed to focus on a few important tasks, not many at once. But we keep asking it to do everything together. Be honest, Leo. You thought multitasking meant you were productive, right?Well, you caught me texting, listening to music, working, and scrolling at the same time.Research from Stanford University actually talks about this exact habit.Let me guess. Turns out we're bad at it, right?

Tell me.School was normal that in the first class we studied math. The teacher explained some exercises and we wrote them in our notebooks. It was the same as always. Nothing new. Why do you ask?Oh, really? What kind of exercises did she explain? Did she give you homework? I'm curious because last week you said math was difficult.Yes, she gave us homework. We solved some equations and she told us to finish them at home. It wasn't very difficult today. That's good. And where did you sit today? Did you sit next to your usual friend Marcus or did you change seats?I um I sat next to Marcus like always. We worked together on the exercises. He helped me a little.Interesting. When did you have your science class? Before or after the break? And what experiment did you do?We had science after the break. We didn't do an experiment. We just read from the book and answered questions. It was a simple class. And how was the cafeteria food? What did you eat for lunch today?I ate rice and chicken. It was okay. Not very good, but not terrible either.Rice and chicken. That's strange. Yesterday you told me Thursdays were pasta days and today is Thursday. When did they change the menu?Oh, maybe I confused the days. Maybe it was pasta. I didn't really pay attention.I see. And who was absent in your class today? You usually tell me when someone doesn't go. So tell me.Um I think Carlos was absent or maybe it was Anna. I don't remember very well. You don't remember very well? That's unusual. You normally tell me many details about your day. What time did your last class finish? It finished at the usual time around 3:00.Yes, 3:00. Around 3 or exactly 3 because your teacher called me at noon. What? My teacher? She uh she called you?Oh, yes, she did. She asked me where you were. She said you weren't in math class. You weren't in science class. You weren't in any class today. So, I'll ask you again. Where were you this morning?Where? Well, Dad, I can't explain.Good. Then explain. Where did you go after you left the house? What did you do instead of going to school? Tell me, son.I didn't go to school. I walked past the bus stop and I decided not to get on the bus. I felt tired and bored and I wanted to do something different. So I went somewhere else. I uh Dad, I can explain.Where did you go? Who were you with? And how long did you stay there?I went to the city center. I walked alone at first and then I stayed there for a few hours. I looked at different stores and compared prices.Compared prices for what? What were you planning to buy?I wanted to buy a gift. I I wanted to prepare something special in advance.A gift for who? Whose birthday was coming?Yours, Dad. Next week is your birthday. I wanted to surprise you. That's why I didn't tell you. I wanted it to be a surprise. You skipped the school to buy my birthday gift. When did you decide that was a good idea?I I decided this week. I thought if I waited, I couldn't find something good. I wanted to choose it carefully and make you proud. What did you buy then? Show me the gift.I didn't buy it yet. I saw something nice, but I wasn't sure.Daniel, I was very angry when the teacher called me. I thought you were irresponsible. But now you are telling me you skipped a school to buy a gift for me. That changes how I feel. I am happy, excited.

    Vol284.日常英语学习The Power of Persistence

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hello friends, welcome back to a brand new session. I'm your host Marco and I am so excited for today's episode. And I'm Emma. Now Marco, our listeners know we usually use movie clips to teach. Are we doing something a bit different today? We are. Today we're trying something special. We have a story that I promise will change the way you think about learning. You definitely won't be disappointed. That's right. We're going to follow a beautiful story chapter by chapter. After each part, we'll stop to break down the most important words and phrases to help you level up your English. The story is about a boy from a tiny village and his journey to becoming fluent. It's a story about heart, struggle, and inspiration. Let's dive into chapter 1.In a small, dusty village where the green fields met the horizon lived a boy named Alex. His life was simple. His father was a hard-working farmer and his mother was a dedicated housewife. While other children played with sticks and stones, Alex carried a heavy old English dictionary. Alex was the English king of his school. He got the highest marks on every exam. He knew every grammar rule by heart. However, Alex had a secret fear. He couldn't speak. One afternoon, Alex approached his best friend, Sam under a large mango tree. "Sam," Alex said nervously, "let us try to converse in the English language today."Sam laughed so hard he nearly fell. "English? Alex, we live in a village. Only people in movies speak English. It's too hard for us. Just speak our language and be normal."Alex asked everyone in his class, but they all denied him. He realized he was being a bit naive. He thought that because he had high marks, everyone would want to practice with him.Wow, poor Alex. He has all the knowledge in his head, but no one to talk to. And did you hear that word at the end? Naive. Let's look at that.Yes, naive.Let's practice the sound first. Naive. Marco, what does it actually mean to be naive?Being naive means you lack experience or wisdom. You believe things are going to be easy or perfect because you don't know the real world yet. You are a bit like a child who thinks every person they meet is a best friend. Alex was naive because he thought that just because he got 100% on his exams, everyone would want to speak English with him in a small farming village. We see this in real life all the time. Think about this. Imagine your friend sees an ad online that says, "Give me $10 and I will give you $1,000 tomorrow." Your friend believes it and sends the money.Oh no. I would tell that friend, don't be so naive. If it sounds too good to be true, it's probably a scam.Exactly. Or think about a new worker at a big company. He thinks he can finish a huge project in just 1 hour. His boss might smile and say, "It's a great goal, but you're being a bit naive about how much work this takes."So being naive isn't stupid. It just means you haven't learned the hard lesson yet.Alex didn't give up. While his friends were out playing or accepting that English was impossible, Alex was searching for a doorway out of the village. He found it in an unexpected place. A dusty drawer containing an old cracked smartphone left behind by his uncle. In a village where the internet was slow and English speakers were non-existent, that phone became Alex's digital window. He would sit behind the cow shed, the only spot with a decent signal, and watch clips of cartoons and movies over and over again. He wasn't just watching, he was shadowing. Every time a character spoke, Alex would whisper the words back, trying to match the rhythm, the speed, and the vibe. But his new obsession caused a storm at home. His mother, who had spent her whole life working with her hands, couldn't understand why her son was wasting his time staring at a glowing box. Every morning the same routine began."Alex, are you still on that machine?" His mother shouted from the kitchen. "The cows haven't been fed. Your father is already in the field. Why are you so lazy?"She would follow him from room to room. "I've told you 10 times already. Put that phone down and help us. Go clean the yard. Go check the crops."His mother was nagging him constantly. To her, he was just a boy avoiding his chores. She didn't realize that in those clips, Alex was discovering a secret world. He was learning that people didn't actually say, "I shall go to the marketplace now." They said, "I'm heading out."One day his mother caught him talking to the phone. "Who are you talking to? There is no one there."Alex looked at her and smiled. "I'm talking to my future, mom."Wow. Alex is really dedicated. He's hiding behind a cow shed just to get a signal. But did you hear how his mother was acting? She was nagging him constantly.Oh, I felt that. Nagging. Let's practice that together, friends. Nagging. It's a very common word, but it's quite different from just talking or asking, isn't it, Marco?Exactly. Nagging is when someone asks you to do something over and over and over again in an annoying way. It's like a broken record that won't stop playing.Right? It's usually about small things like chores, homework, or cleaning. The person nagging usually has good intentions, but the person listening feels like their ears are going to explode. We've all been there. Think about a typical Saturday morning. Your mom or your spouse walks into the room and says, "Clean your room. Why haven't you cleaned your room? I told you yesterday to clean your room."Exactly. You would say, "Stop nagging me. I'll do it in 5 minutes." It's that feeling of being pressured about the same thing repeatedly. Or imagine you were at work. Your boss emails you every 10 minutes asking, "Is the report done yet? How about now? Is it finished?" You might whisper to your colleague, "The boss is really nagging me about this report today." So nagging is basically repetitive complaining or constantly reminding someone to do something they don't want to do.

    Vol283.日常英语学习The Power of Grit

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888What's up everyone? Welcome back to Podcast and Chill. I'm Leo.And I'm Gwen. Leo, I stayed up way too late last night reading.Let me guess. Romance novel.Excuse me. No, it was about this basketball player who got cut from his high school team.Wait, are you talking about Michael Jordan?Yeah, you know him.Gwen, that's the legend himself. Coach said he wasn't good enough and boom, six championships, five MVPs, and 10 scoring titles. The man could fly.Yes. But here's what got me. It wasn't just talent that made him great. He had grit.Grit? You mean like tough determination?Exactly. And that's our topic today: grit. That's right, everyone. In this episode, we'll find out the sneaky reason our brains trick us into quitting, and also how grit really works, and then six easy ways to build more of it.This episode is B1 Level English, but if you're a strong beginner, you'll be fine. We will keep things clear, explain key words, and do a recap at the end. Ready to stop quitting and start growing some grit, guys? Let's get into it.What is Grit?Leo. The best way I can describe grit is that it's not just trying hard. Tell me more about it.Hear me out. Grit is a passion that lasts for years and the perseverance to stick with it. Just like your jeans, the more you wash it, the more comfortable and stronger it gets.Oh, I'm with you now. Grit is not the "new year, new me" energy that's gone by next week.Exactly. That's just a spark. Grit is the whole campfire you keep going through the night.Got it. But what about talent, though? Everyone loves a natural.Well, talent helps you start fast. It's like getting a head start in a race. It's awesome, right? But grit decides who finishes it. The marathon winner isn't always the fastest starter. It's the one who runs through the "why am I doing this" moments. So often talent gets you ahead early, but grit gets you to the end. That's a great way to put it. And that means grit is the real key. No matter how much talent you have.Exactly. What do you think matters more for success? Passion, natural talent, or perseverance? Drop your thoughts in the comments. Honestly, Leo, talking about this reminds me of how many things I've quit. Piano lessons, drawing. You quit things? I thought it was just me. I have a room full of half-started hobbies. Why Do We Quit?Weird, right? If grit's the answer, why are we all so good at quitting?I think it's because we expect results way too fast. We live in an instant world anyway.Oh yeah. That's the biggest reason ever. And the fact that modern life totally trains us for it. Instant noodles, instant delivery, instant success. We get used to everything being fast. Not to mention, we often mix up interest with commitment, too.I know this one. Interest is "Oh, fun." Commitment is "I'm doing this even on the bad days."Yep. Big difference, but easy to mix up.What makes you think people give up that fast? Mine is definitely when things start to feel uncomfortable. That can definitely be a reason, too. But mostly, we lose motivation when progress is slow.Ouch. The "I'm not seeing results, so why bother" part is so real.Totally. And to make it worse, we often see someone else succeeding and think we'll never get there. Social media definitely messes with our heads. Also, we don't value slow daily progress. We just want the big win and forget how important doing it every day is. Just like the tortoise and rabbit story. The Science of GritThat. And get this, it's not just a nice story. There's actual science proving the tortoise wins. For real? What science?

    Vol282.日常英语学习Hard Work Pays Off

Good morning. I want to talk with you today. But don't worry, this is not a problem. I just want to ask you some questions about the story and also about you. You are an important part of this business.Good morning, boss. Thank you. I am a little nervous, but I am ready. I always try to do my best at work. So, I hope everything is okay.Everything is fine. Okay, let's start with the inventory. I want to understand how the store is doing. How much rice did we sell this week?Uh, we sold a lot of rice. We sold about 20 bags this week. Right now, there's not much left. We have only five bags in the storage room.Okay, that's good information. How much sugar did we sell?We sold around 15 kilos of sugar. There is still some sugar left, but not too much. We have about 6 kilos now.I see. And how many bottles of cooking oil are left?Let me remember. We started the week with 30 bottles. We sold 22 bottles. So there are only eight bottles left now.Oh, that's good. How many cartons of milk did we sell?We sold many cartons of milk. We sold almost all of them. There are only four cartons left on the shelf. I checked that today.Wow. That means milk is very popular. Very good. Now, how much bread do customers usually buy every day?Customers buy a lot of bread every day. On average, we sell about 40 pieces of bread daily, sometimes more, sometimes less.Very good. Now tell me how many customers come to the store in the morning.Um, let's see. In the morning we usually have many customers. Around 30 to 40 people come before noon. And how many customers come in the afternoon? In the afternoon there are fewer customers, not like in the morning. About 20 people come between noon and 6:00.What about the evenings? How many customers are there? In the evening, there are many again similar to the morning. I could say around 30 customers, especially people coming back from work. That's more people than in the morning and in the afternoon coming to the store.

    Vol281.日常英语Returning a Defective Product

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hello everyone and welcome to English Pod. My name is Marco. My name is Katherine. And we're going shopping today at English Pod.That's right. Today we are going to the store because we want to return a product. So maybe the product that we bought had some problem and we want our money back. That's right. So let's take a listen to today's dialogue and we'll be back in a moment to talk more about what's going on.Dialogue (First Listen)Customer: Hi, I would like to return this TV.Clerk: Sure. Do you have a receipt?Customer: Yeah, here you go. Actually, I also want to return this keyboard.Clerk: Okay. May I ask what the reason for returning these products is?Customer: The TV flickers a lot when I am watching a movie and at times the image is not very clear.Clerk: I see. And what about the keyboard?Customer: I spilled some coffee on it and now it won't work.Clerk: I'm sorry, ma'am, but we can only exchange or refund defective products. We cannot take responsibility for misuse or damages.Customer: Fine. I don't know why they make these things so delicate. Anyways...Language TakeawayAll right, we're back. So, now let's take a look at some of those key words on Language Takeaway.Language Takeaway. So, we've got a great bunch of words for you here today. The first three are nouns, and then afterwards, we've got a couple of adjectives to describe those nouns. But first up, we have the word "receipt".That's right. So, we want to return the television, and the worker there asks us if we have the receipt.Okay. A receipt is a small piece of paper that you receive from a clerk or a server after you buy something. So, if I buy a TV, I will have this small piece of paper that says that I paid $500 for the TV.That's right. So, usually they will ask you for the receipt to see when you bought the product and if you bought the product at that store. That's right. So, the receipt has all sorts of information: date, time, method of payment, cost, all those things. Right. And it's very important if you ever want to return something. Now, later on in the dialogue, the character explains why he wants to return the TV. Now, Marco, why does he want to do that?Well, he has a problem with the TV when he's watching a movie. Basically, the image is not very clear. So, this is the keyword "image".So, image can mean a couple of different things. You might hear the word image to mean a photograph or a picture like on a computer. But in this case, the image is how well you can see the images on TV, the things on TV.That's right. So on TV, it's like you're seeing many, many images all at once or very rapidly together. So maybe if you can't see clearly, you say that the image is not clear on the TV.All right. And so if it's fuzzy, like there's gray and black, the image is not clear. You can also say that, "You know, I really like my new TV. The image is very clear." That's right. Okay. And not only are we returning a TV, but we're also returning a keyboard. All right. A keyboard. A key is something that you can push. But a keyboard is this thing that you use with your computer to type words. That's right. So many of you who are using the website as we speak are using a keyboard and a mouse. So, these are probably one of the two most well-known objects when you're using a computer. That's right. And keyboards come in many different shapes and sizes. You can buy French keyboards and Russian keyboards. So, keyboard is the general word for this tool.Okay. So, we are returning the keyboard and the clerk explains that we can only return it if it is defective. If the product is defective. All right. So, this is one of those adjectives I talked about a minute ago. Adjectives describe things. So, "my keyboard is defective" or "this TV is defective." That means it doesn't work. That's right. So, we have a defective product. It's not working properly. It has some problem. And well, the guy was complaining that he didn't understand why these things like the keyboard are so delicate. All right. Delicate is something you might see written on the side of a box when you receive a package. Something that is delicate breaks very easily. That's right. So you have to handle with care. So for example, glass is very delicate. It can break easily. All right. Glass is delicate, but stones, a big rock, that's not delicate. That's right. All right. So that's all we have for Language Takeaway. Let's review everything and listen to our dialogue.Dialogue (Second Listen)Customer: Hi, I would like to return this TV.Clerk: Sure. Do you have a receipt?Customer: Yeah, here you go. Actually, I also want to return this keyboard.Clerk: Okay. May I ask what the reason for returning these products is?Customer: The TV flickers a lot when I'm watching a movie, and at times the image is not very clear.Clerk: I see. Anyways...Fluency BuilderAll right, we're back. So, now let's take a look at a couple of phrases we've picked out. Four, to be exact, on Fluency Builder.Fluency Builder. The first verb we have today here in Fluency Builder is the main verb in today's dialogue: "to return". So, "I would like to return this TV."Okay. So when you want to give back a product, you don't say "I want to give back" or anything like this. You say, "I want to return this product."Well, it's not just giving back. It's giving back and getting your money back. That's right. So "to return" means that you bring back the product and the store will give you back your money. That's right. And he wanted to return the TV, as we mentioned, because the image was not very clear. But he also mentioned that the TV flickers a lot. So what is this "to flicker"? "To flicker" is another verb. And flicker is something that things with light do. The light flickers, the TV flickers. It means the light comes on and off, on and off, on and off. A dark light, dark light. It's not very steady. It's not like there's a light or dark. And so this is very annoying when you're watching TV because it goes light, dark, light, dark, and it's hard to see what's happening.Exactly. So it's basically just imagine someone is turning on and off the light all the time. That's the same thing that's happening with the TV. It flickers.Exactly. Or like when a light bulb in your lamp, when a light bulb is dying...It flickers. That's right. All right. So we wanted to actually return these goods and the clerk explained that we can exchange or we can refund defective products.Okay, these are two important verbs. "Exchange" means to trade one thing for another, right? So when I go to a foreign country, I exchange money, right? I can exchange Japanese yen for American dollars. But at a store, like an electronic store, I can exchange my TV that I don't like for maybe a really good MP3 player or something like that.So that's what happens usually if maybe your TV is broken or it had some problem, you exchange it for a new one, right? But maybe you don't want the TV anymore. Maybe you changed your mind. So you want to get a refund. So "refund", you hear this word "fund" that has to do with money. A refund means that the store will give you all your money back. So, if I refund my TV, I give my TV to the store, the store gives me $500 or whatever the money for the TV was, and I can buy anything else anywhere else. That's right. So, this is what happens when you get a refund. Very different from exchanging the goods. And finally, the clerk explained that they cannot take responsibility for misuse or damages. So, remember this as a phrase. This is really important: "to take responsibility". It means that if something goes wrong, you will take responsibility for it. You will handle it.Mhm.All right. So, for example, the store says that it can't take responsibility if something is broken. That means that they won't pay you back money. That's right. So, if you buy a TV and you accidentally get it wet or you get water inside and this is why it gets damaged, then the store cannot take responsibility for this damage. Or you could say the other way around. You could say if you're at the office and you make a mistake on a report, you say, "Listen, boss, I'm really sorry. I take full responsibility for this mistake. You can, you know, punish me or you can make me do it again, but I take responsibility." It means that I say it's my fault.Right. You're guilty. All right, so that's all we have for Fluency Builder. Let's listen to our dialogue one last time and we can review everything we've just learned.

    Vol280.日常英语学习Be Your Own Safe Place

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey hey hey everyone. Welcome back to Pod and Chill. I'm Leo.And I'm Gwen. It feels nice to sit down and talk with you again today. Some days feel light, some days feel heavy, and both are okay to bring into this space.Speaking of heavy days, something happened to me yesterday. What happened, Leo?Yesterday I met a close friend of mine. Her boyfriend just dumped her, you know. She kept blaming herself again and again.Oh, that must be really hard for her.Yeah. She said she wasn't good enough and asked, "What should I change for someone to love me?" But she never paused to ask if she was already enough.Well, that's today's topic. Learning to love yourself more than anyone else. This episode is for B1 listeners and strong beginners. There'll be vocabulary and a PDF so you can review later. Now, let's begin. Before we go deeper, hold one thought with us. Loving yourself is not pushing yourself to be better every day. Yes, it is choosing to stop being unkind to yourself. To do that, we first need to understand what self-love really means. Self-love sounds simple, but it feels heavy. I think many people feel a little confused right away. Like, am I allowed to love myself that much? And if I do, does that make me narcissistic?Oh, Leo, that's a very normal reaction. Some of us imagine loving yourself means having a big ego, like you always put yourself first and never say sorry. But that's not what real self-love looks like at all. It often shows up in small moments that most people don't even notice.Yes. And loving yourself actually starts with self-acceptance. When you practice accepting your imperfect parts, you stop building your worth on emotional dependency.Yes. You accept that some days you feel clear and confident and other days you feel tired, lost or unsure.Instead of fighting those days, you stay with yourself through them. That's a big part of respecting yourself.Well, imagine it this way. Loving yourself is like staying in an old house that you've lived in for many years. And it has seen every version of us, right?Yes. Some walls are cracked, some rooms are full of things you don't use anymore. And some corners are a bit dark and forgotten. But you don't destroy the house just because it's not perfect.Yeah. Instead, you try to clean one small corner at a time, open the windows, let fresh air and light come in, and slowly the house starts to feel different. That's when you start to notice new things.Yeah. Like a quiet spot where you feel safe or a window where the morning light feels gentle. Those things were always there, you just didn't slow down enough to see them before. That's how inner stability is built, by staying, not escaping. So, loving yourself is choosing to stay with who you are. You decide to care for yourself instead of judging yourself. Before we move on, let's pause for a moment together. Ask yourself softly, am I treating myself with kindness? You don't need to answer it perfectly. Just notice what comes up. And we'll explore why this feels so hard in the next part. So, if loving yourself sounds gentle and simple, why does it still feel so hard sometimes?I think one big reason starts very early in our lives. When we were children, love often felt like something we had to earn by being useful, being easy to love. When love comes from outside, it can be taken away. Slowly our value becomes something fragile.Yes. One failure, one rejection, and everything feels like it collapses. I've seen people who are very kind to others. They listen. They help. They show up when someone is tired. But when it comes to themselves, they never let themselves rest or admit they're really tired. Right.

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hey son, are you ready now? It's my weekend with you and I was really looking forward to it. I thought we could go for a walk, maybe get some food or just sit somewhere and talk. We don't have to do anything special. I just want to spend time with you and enjoy the day.No, I'm not ready. I don't want to go out today. I just want to stay here. What? You don't want to go out? That's strange. You usually like going out, even if it's just for a short walk. Did something happen? Are you feeling sick or tired or is something bothering you?I'm not sick. I'm just not in the mood. That's all. And honestly, I don't really want to spend the day pretending everything is okay.Pretending? What do you mean by that? I'm not asking you to pretend anything. I just want to have a good weekend with my son. That's all. That's the problem. You always say that, but it never feels real. It feels like you want everything to be fine without talking about what's actually wrong.I don't understand why you are so upset. If something's wrong, you can tell me. I'm your father. I'm here to listen to you. You can trust me.You say you listen, but when I talk, you get defensive or you get angry or you change the subject. So, what's the point? All right, I hear you. Maybe I didn't listen well before, but right now I'm asking you, please tell me what's going on inside your head.I don't know where to start. There are so many things that I keep inside. And every time I see you, they come back. It's not easy for me to talk about them.We don't have to rush. We are not going anywhere today. Take your time.Okay, let's see if that's true. Then I'll ask you something. Something I've wanted to ask you for a long time, but I was scared to do it. Why did you and mom really divorce? I don't want a short answer. I want the truth. That's a difficult question. Your mother and I had many problems and things were not working anymore. She was unhappy, always complaining. And no matter what I did, it was never enough for her.So, you're saying it was her fault, that she was the problem.I'm saying that she changed. She became distant, cold, and angry. I tried to keep the family together, but she pushed me away. That's not how I remember it. I remember both of you arguing. I remember silence at dinner. I remember you coming home late and not talking to anyone.I was there too, you know. Yes, I know you were there, son. But you were just a kid. You didn't understand everything that was happening between adults.Maybe I didn't understand everything. But I saw enough. I saw mom crying in the kitchen when she thought no one was looking. I saw you ignoring her when she tried to talk to you. That wasn't only her fault.Son. I was tired. I was stressed. I was working all the time to provide for this family. Nobody ever talks about that.I know. I know you worked hard. I'm not saying you didn't. But working hard doesn't mean you can disappear emotionally. Mom needed you and I needed you, too. That's the truth. I didn't know how to show it. I thought bringing money home was enough. That's how I was raised. My father never talked about feelings either.I understand. But mom told you many times that she felt alone. She asked you to go to therapy. She asked you to talk more. You didn't want to listen. You never wanted to listen.Son... I thought therapy was a waste of time. I thought we could fix things by ourselves. You always said mom was exaggerating, that she was dramatic. But from my side, it looked like she was desperate.I was wrong about that. But son, I didn't want to. I just— Your mom always—Stop blaming my mom. You were also part of that problem. Dad, I think it's time you take responsibility for your actions, right?Well, I suppose yeah, you're right. I see that now. At that time, I was too proud. I didn't want to admit that I was part of the problem. It was easier to blame her than to look at myself. You also shouted a lot. You think I don't remember, but I do. Even when you didn't shout at me, I felt scared. You must know that.I know. I know that. And that's something I regret deeply. I was angry—very angry at life, at work, at myself. And I took it out on the people I loved the most. That was unfair. After the divorce, you always told me that mom broke the family, that she destroyed everything. But I felt like I was losing both of you, not just her.I was hard and I was bitter. I wanted someone to blame. I didn't realize that I was hurting you by saying those things.I felt like I had to choose sides. When I was with mom, I felt guilty for loving you. I mean, when I was with you, I felt guilty for loving her. That's not something a child should feel. Am I right?Yes, son. You are right. I failed you there. I should have protected you from our problems instead of pulling you into them.

    Vol278.日常英语学习Talking About Horoscopes

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hello everyone and welcome to English Pod. My name is Marco. My name is Katherine and we're talking about the stars today. That's right. Today we're going to talk about a very popular uh subject. Many people believe in the horoscope. So horoscope is basically a system, very old system of determining your future and describing your personality. And so it all depends on when you were born and where you were born. So, what stars were in the sky when you were born? That's right. So, basically, as many of you may know, there are 12 signs and we're going to talk about a couple of them and a little bit more about horoscopes and this uh I don't know. I guess it's kind of like a branch of science or pseudoscience.Pseudo science. Yeah, I don't think there's much testing that's going on, but it's definitely something that a lot of people believe in. So, let's take a listen to today's dialogue and we'll be back in a moment to talk more about it.Hey Lydia, what are you reading?I'm looking at my horoscope for this month. My outlook is very positive. It says that I should take a vacation to someplace exotic and that I will have a passionate summer fling. What are you talking about? Let me see that. What are horoscopes? It's a prediction of your month based on your zodiac sign. You have a different sign for the month and date you were born in. I was born on April 15th, so I'm an Aries. When were you born?January 5th.Let's see. You're a Capricorn. It says that you'll be feeling stress at work, but you could see new exciting developments in your love life. Looks like we'll both have interesting summers. That's bogus. I don't feel any stress at work, and my love life is practically non-existent. This zodiac stuff is all a bunch of nonsense. No, it's not. Your astrology sign can tell you a lot about your personality. See, it says that an Aries is energetic and loves to socialize.Well, you certainly match those criteria, but they're so broad they could apply to anyone. What does it say about me?A Capricorn is serious-minded and practical. She likes to do things in conventional ways. That sounds just like you.All right, we're back. So, a very interesting dialogue between these two girls talking about one of them believing in the horoscope and the other one doesn't. But, uh, they mentioned a lot of interesting things. So, we're going to have two language takeaways today. Let's start with language takeaway part one.Language TakeawayAll right. So, one of the most common things you'll hear when we talk about the horoscope in English is an outlook. And an outlook can be positive or negative. So what exactly is an outlook?Well, if you notice, Lydia said, "My outlook is very positive." So basically, she's talking about her future, right? So the way that she sees the future or the way that the horoscope talks about the future is a positive one.So you could say, "Uh, you know those eight-balls? They're black and they have like a message and you shake it and it gives you a message. You ask a question. It says outlook positive."That's right. Outlook negative. So that means in your near future things will either be positive or negative.Mhm. So I guess you can apply it for example to a company. You say that a company has a positive outlook or even a person, you know, he's a very positive person. So he has a positive outlook. He thinks good things are going to happen.Okay. Very good. So talking about horoscopes obviously we must mention the 12 zodiac signs.Okay. So each month has its own sign and they're not exactly the months. They're a little bit different, but um each sign is a kind of an animal or a symbol. That's right. So, for example, a lot of August is part of the Leo sign in English. So, that's the lion. And so, the lion is the animal, the zodiac.Mhm. So, the zodiac sign is one of these signs like Leo is one of the zodiac signs. And I guess the all 12 signs are considered the zodiac or the horoscope.Exactly. And you can actually talk about the zodiac in terms of other cultures. There is a Chinese zodiac. So we could say it's the year of the horse, but that's a little bit different from what we're talking about here with the western horoscope.Okay, very good. So all of this actually comes down to the as we say the pseudoscience or the branch called astrology.

    Vol277.日常英语学习The Art of Saying No

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hello everybody. Welcome back to Podcast and Chill. I'm Leo.And I'm Gwen. Leo, you look really tired today. You okay?Uh, yesterday I stayed super late helping a coworker with his project, then woke up this morning to a text from my cousin asking for a ride to school.Don't you guys live in different areas?Yeah, completely out of my way to work, but she asked. So—So why didn't you just say no?I don't know. I just worry they'll be upset with me.But saying yes to everything only makes you more tired and unhappy.I know. I just give in. Now I feel bad about myself like I'm being used. Then today we will talk about the art of saying no.Yep. We'll learn how to set clear boundaries, share useful tips for work and personal life. Also, how to spot and handle emotional bullying. This episode is B1 level English, but strong beginners can follow along. We'll explain key words and do a full recap at the end.The Work Trap: Why We Say YesLeo, picture this. You're packing up to leave work. Laptops closed. Bag is zipped.Ah, the best moment of the day. Then our boss walks up behind you. "Hey, Leo. Do you have a minute? You're really good at this. So, can you help me with this document?" What do you do?Honestly, I'd probably just say yes, even though I'm already thinking about dinner. Why though?Because I'm afraid saying no could hurt my chances of a promotion. So, it's the fear. Fear of being seen as difficult or that it might hurt your chances.Yep. And that fear is why I'm sitting here looking like I haven't slept in 3 days. That's the trap, Leo. When you live to please others, you put their needs first every time. Your mouth says, "Yes, sure," but your brain is screaming, "No way."And what's the real cost of that?Everything. Your bandwidth.Hold on. What's bandwidth? It sounds like a sandwich. No, it's not. It means how much time and energy you have. If you don't take care of yourself first, you'll get tired and grumpy. You might even start hating the people you're trying to help.Wait, so boundaries aren't about being selfish? Not at all. They're about self-respect and building your self-esteem. When you respect yourself and your own needs, others start to respect you, too.Strategies for the WorkplaceInstead of saying no right away, take a breath. Build in a pause to stop the "yes" and buy yourself time to think.Oh, like a simple list? "Just so you know, I'm finishing the Johnson report for Friday. So—"Perfect. Keep it simple and true. If they say, "I understand, but I really need this," ask for their help to decide what comes first: "I can do this, but which of my tasks should I move or delay?"Whoa. Making them choose what's less important. Sneaky. It's just smart. You're showing personal agency by protecting your time. Most bosses respect that. Ask questions to understand the real ask. When is it really due?Or I can give them a new plan: "I can start this first thing on Monday with a fresh mind, or I can do part A if someone else takes care of part B."Exactly. Stay cool, polite, and resolute. No shaky voice, no fake sick grandma excuses.Handling Coworkers and FriendsFor coworkers, my favorite move is the checkback. Say: "I'm busy until after lunch. Can you check back with me at 2:00 if it's still urgent?"Oh, I see. If it's really urgent, they'll come back. If not, they'll solve it themselves.Another great move is the better fit. Say: "This isn't really my area. David would be better at this. Need me to call him?"So I'm not saying I won't; I'm saying here's who can. Now, about friends. I once skipped a concert because I was tired. My friend Emma was a little hurt at first, but I stayed friendly and warm. Saying no early is the best way to protect a friendship from bad feelings. But what if they keep pushing? "Come on, just for one drink."A good friend will stop. If they make you feel bad on purpose, that's emotional bullying. A calm response is: "Hey, I care about you, but when I say no, I need you to respect that."The Final Boss: Family and PartnersWhat about family? The "but we're family" excuse is tough.Set a clear rule. If a cousin wants to borrow money: "Sorry, I have a rule that I never let family borrow money. It keeps things simple."Just like that? A personal rule.Yes. And for the "tech support" uncle, set a time limit: "I can help you on Saturday, but I only have from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. free." Also, don't reply too fast to texts. A pause teaches them you aren't always available. And partners? If they want you to go hiking at 4:00 a.m., say: "I know you love hiking, but waking up that early isn't for me. Why don't you go with the group and I'll have lunch ready when you get back?" It supports them without losing yourself.

    Vol276.日常英语学习The True Meaning of Success

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Son, I want to talk to you about something important, please. Well, I don't know the best way to start this conversation, since today has been a very strange and heavy day for me, full of thoughts and worries. I really need to share them with you calmly because you are growing up. And I believe you deserve honesty, even when the truth is not easy to say.Of course, Dad, I can talk with you. And I am actually very excited today because I was thinking about many things I want to do this month, and many plans I have for school, for my hobbies, and for my future. And I also wanted to tell you how proud I am of you, Dad. Really? Because I always tell my friends that my father has a great job, a good salary, and that he works very hard to give our family a better life.Hearing that makes my heart feel warm and heavy at the same time. Because I love that you feel proud of me and I love that you have dreams, plans, and big hopes for your future. But today, something unexpected happened at work. Something I did not plan, something I did not want. And since the moment I left the office, I had been thinking again and again about how to explain it to you without hurting your feelings or breaking your excitement.Don't worry, Dad. You can tell me anything because I trust you, and I know you always try your best for our family. So, next month I want to join a sports club, buy new shoes, pay for extra classes at school, and maybe even save some money for a small trip with my classmates. And I was very happy because I thought everything could be easy with your job.I love that you want to study more, play sports, and enjoy your youth. But this is exactly why this conversation is so difficult for me. Today my manager called me into his office, looked at me with a serious face, and told me that the company is having financial problems, that they need to reduce the staff, and that my position is no longer available.I am a little confused because you always said your company was strong and growing. I never imagined something like this could happen. You are very good at your job. So I don't understand why they would let you go.Sometimes losing a job is not about being good or bad, strong or weak, but about decisions, about numbers, budgets, and plans that we cannot control. And even though I worked hard, arrived early, left late, and gave my best every day, today they told me that my contract ends this week.I see now. I start to understand why you look so tired and quiet today. I was counting on that money. Now I don't know what our situation is.This is the hardest part, and this is what has been breaking my heart since the afternoon because I know you need support, you need stability, and you need opportunities to grow. But for some time, I will not be able to give you everything you want or everything you planned, and I may not be able to give you extra money for clubs, trips, or new things. At least until I find a new job or rebuild our financial situation step by step.I feel a little sad hearing this because I was dreaming about many things. And now I realize that life can change very fast without warning. But I also see that you are very honest with me and that you are trying to protect me. I don't know how to feel. I wanted to do many things. I know it's not your fault.I understand, son. I know you feel upset. But I will find a better job. I promise. I will get a job soon. It doesn't matter if I have to work on something I don't like. I'm going to do my best to get the money to pay for all your things. No, that's not necessary. I still believe in you and I still feel proud of you. Not because of your job or your salary, but because you are a good father, a hard worker, and an honest man. And maybe we cannot buy everything now, or travel, or pay for all my plans, but we can still study and work together. Better days will come because I know you will not give up. You just take it easy. We will be fine. Just find a job you enjoy. Are you sure about that? But you need a lot of things... and that everything will be fine...Just promise me that you will find a job you like. Are you really sure about that?Wow. I am surprised that I'm sure everything will be fine. I promise. We'll be fine. Thank you, son. Your words give me more strength than any salary or promotion. Let us face this together, because family life is not only about money, comfort, and plans, but about love, support, and staying united when times are hard.

    Vol275.日常英语学习The High School Reunion

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hello everyone and welcome to English Pod. My name is Marco. My name is Katherine. And today we have an elementary level lesson in which we're going to talk about small talk. That's right. Today we're going to talk to an old friend. And so we're going to give you some of the words and phrases you need to talk about your past or talk about how you have been.So let's listen to today's dialogue and we'll be back in a moment to discuss it.The DialogueBill: I hate coming to high school reunions.Dorothy: It'll be great, honey. We will get to see your old classmates and catch up to see how they've been doing.Bill: Uh, yeah, I guess so. Oh, look. There's Robert Matthews. Rob!Rob: Hey, Bill. Wow. Great to see you.Bill: Likewise. It's been a long time. This is my wife, Dorothy.Rob: Pleasure to meet you. So, Bill, how have you been?Bill: Can't complain. We have two children who are in college and my business is going well. How about you?Rob: Ah, you know me. I'm a dedicated bachelor. I never married, although I do have a beautiful daughter with Mary. You remember her? We were high school sweethearts. It didn't really work out between us, but I really can't complain either.Bill: That's good. Have you seen Frank? I was hoping he would come tonight.Rob: You didn't hear? Frank passed away last year.Bill: Are you serious?Rob: Nah, I'm just yanking your chain. He'll be here soon. I saw him last week. He told me he would show up.Language TakeawayAll right, we're back. So, now let's get started with our language takeaway. The first phrase we have here in language takeaway is a very important one because it is the setting for today's dialogue. We are at a high school reunion. That's right. So, everyone knows what high school is, but a high school reunion is when you go back to your high school for a party, maybe 5 years or 10 years after you graduate. So, then you meet all your old friends from high school. You talk about, you know, how you have been and just meet up with everyone that maybe you haven't seen in a very long time.Exactly. So, a reunion usually happens every 5 years, 10 years or 20 years. It can happen at different times, but this is important because you can have many different kinds of reunions like a college reunion or a high school reunion. I've even heard of some people who had an elementary school reunion.Really? Wow. Imagine seeing your classmates when you were maybe 10 years old.I couldn't imagine it. All right, so we're at a high school reunion and we are there because we're going to meet our old classmates and to catch up and see how they have been. Okay, so this is exactly what you do at a reunion. You catch up with people that you maybe lost touch with. To catch up means to find out about what people have been doing since the last time you talked. So maybe Marco and I were classmates in high school and we haven't talked in 10 years. I say, "Marco, I want to catch up. I want to learn about what you do, who you married, where you work," things like that.Right? So when two people get together, they catch up. Maybe it doesn't even have to be a very long time. Maybe you haven't seen your friend for a week and so you want to get together, have a cup of coffee, and catch up and see how the relationship has been going or how is work. So you want to catch up.So you can say this in a very simple way: "Let's catch up" or "It's been nice to catch up."That's right. All right, moving on to our next word. This guy Bill meets up with Robert Matthews and they're saying, "Hey, wow, great to see you." And he answers by saying likewise. So "it's good to see you," "likewise," right? That means it's good to see you too.So you don't have to repeat everything that person just said. For example, if I just meet someone new and I say it's a pleasure to meet you, you can say...I could say likewise.Likewise.Cause I don't want to say "it's a pleasure to meet you, too." That's so many words. So likewise is a very short way to say all of those things. That's right. So, we were finding out about Robert Matthews and he says that well, he is a dedicated bachelor. So, a dedicated bachelor, what is a bachelor, Marco? So, a bachelor is a person who is not married, a person who is single.A man, a woman cannot be a bachelor. So, a bachelor is specifically a man and he's not married. And we often have a stereotype—that means we have an idea of what a bachelor lives like. You know, he has only beer in his refrigerator and he has many relationships and no wife. That's right. So a dedicated bachelor is a person who is not married and doesn't really seem to want to get married or any of this. He wants to stay single.Exactly. Okay. And well to finish off, this guy Robert lied a little bit to Bill saying that Frank had passed away. That's really mean. But this phrase to pass away is very important and something we should talk about. So what does it mean to pass away? It's another way of saying he died. That's nicer.

This is my first day at this school, so I don't know where the bathroom is or anything.I see. Well, welcome. This is a small school and town, but you will love it. The teachers are great and the classes are very interesting.Really? I don't think so. Have you ever been to London?London? No, I've never been there. Why? Are you from London? No, I am not from London. I was born in this country but a different city. I have been to London twice. It was amazing. I studied there for 2 years and the teachers are awesome. Nothing compared to these ones.I see. But how do you know? You haven't even taken any class yet. The teachers here are very good. Well, I learned a lot here. You should give them a chance. You say that because you've never had the best teachers. But anyway, I suppose I will have to get used to this, um, school. And tell me, does this school have a cafeteria at least? I imagine it has a place where we can eat, right?Yes, of course. It is a big cafeteria. Mrs. Gomez cooks very well. She always makes delicious meals. You will love it.I highly doubt it. I have tried different kinds of food in London and nothing compares to their food. Plus, the schools there have high standards of care and cleanliness. Something I definitely won't find here. Have you ever tried fish from London?Fish from London? No, I haven't eaten that. Is it delicious? You can't imagine. The fish there is of the highest quality. It's soft fish and is raised specifically for consumption. It is served with fries and salad.Oh, I love rice. They also have fried chicken. Please do not compare refined London fish with your chips served by someone who probably has no idea what basic hygiene standards are. I can't eat there. They serve the best food and it's delicious. Of course, I don't always eat out. Most of the time I eat at home. Mary makes very good meals.Mary? Is that your mom? My mom also cooks delicious food. She makes an amazing spaghetti. I promise. She makes it with mushrooms and it's delicious. No, you don't understand. Mary is not my mother. She works in my house. She's a professional chef who cooks for us. She makes dishes from different countries. Have you ever tried food from France or Greece?I don't think so. I've tried French fries. I'm just kidding. I have never had a chef just for me. That must be something great. It is. And have you ever traveled by plane? I don't think so.Oh yes. Uh, we've traveled many times. I mean, my family and I, we go on vacations once a year and sometimes we go to a city far from here.I travel by airplane every month. It's something that comes naturally to me. Miss Childs will call you to discuss more on Monday or Tuesday. How does that sound?Rebecca: That sounds perfect. Thank you very much for taking the time to speak to me, Mr. Parsons.Mr. Parsons: The pleasure is all mine, Rebecca.Rebecca: I hope to hear from you very soon.Mr. Parsons: Absolutely. Thanks for coming, Rebecca. Goodbye.Language TakeawayAll right, great. So, really good things from Rebecca. She said some very interesting things, key things there. So, why don't we take a look at those on Language Takeaway. At the beginning of the end of the interview, Rebecca says, "Listen, I think you have covered all the main points for me." So, this is after Mr. Parsons asks her if she has questions. And this word covered is very important. That's right. So, if we talk about cover, to cover the main points or to cover a topic, it means to discuss it thoroughly or to have it finished.Right. So, if I still have questions, we have not covered everything.Mhm. But if I did ask all the questions that I have, then we've covered everything. So the verb here is to cover. That's right. Okay. And Mr. Parsons says, "Well, you know what? Here's my business card with my mobile number." So this word business card, key element of any interview or any business situation. As you say, a key part of any business interaction. So a business card is a very small card, usually thick, and it has a person's name, job, phone number, and sometimes email address. Now on the card. So, the information can change, but it's a contact card basically for one person. That's right. So, this is very important to have around, especially in situations like this.Mhm.Okay. And moving on, he also told her that if she has any other questions to not hesitate and to contact him. This is a very common phrase. Don't hesitate to contact me or don't hesitate to ask. That's right. So to hesitate means to be nervous about something or to maybe not do it because you're uncomfortable. So you know, Marco, I want to ask you something, but I'm not sure if I want to ask you. Maybe you'll be angry or concerned. So I'm hesitating. Okay, the verb here is to hesitate. You have doubts.I have doubts. And so he says, don't hesitate to contact me. That means any questions, any issues, please call me. Okay, very good. And Mr. Parsons said that they are finishing the short list of interviews tomorrow. So what does it mean a short list?Well, a short list is something we talk about during the interview process because the interviewer—so in this case Mr. Parsons—will have a long list of people who want the job, and maybe after the first interview he will cut the list down to a very small number of people, 10 or 15.Mhm.And that is called the short list. So, those are the people who did well on the first interview, but who maybe should come back for a second or third interview. That's right. Okay. Very good. So, a lot of great things there. Why don't we take a break? Let's go back and listen to the dialogue. Let's see what Mr. Parsons and Rebecca said, and we'll be back with some really good phrases that you can close off an interview with.Dialogue ReplayMr. Parsons: Well, Rebecca, is there anything else you need to know for now?Rebecca: I don't think so, Mr. Parsons. I think you have covered all the main points for me.Mr. Parsons: Okay. Well, listen. Here's my business card with my mobile number. If any other questions spring to mind, don't hesitate to contact me. Of course, you can also call Miss Childs, too.Rebecca: Great. Um, when can I expect to hear from you?

Vol271.日常英语学习5 Steps to Hack Your Brain

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hi friends, welcome back to Podcast and Chill. I'm Gwen. And I'm Leo.So, picture this. You sit down with your English books ready to study, but then—ding—your phone lights up.Your friend just sent you a funny TikTok video. You think, "Okay, it's just 15 seconds." But we all know how this story goes, right? One video becomes 10, 10 becomes 50...And suddenly you look at the clock and one hour has passed. Now you know all the trending TikTok dances, but zero new English words. You feel awful. But the worst part, you repeat the same cycle the next day. Well, if this is you, don't be sad. You're just human. Nobody is perfect. But if you think you're lazy, stop there. Laziness is not the cause. The real bad guy hides inside your brain. And that's exactly what we'll talk about today. In this episode, we'll talk about why you fall into this cycle and how to stop it in five easy steps. We'll also help you learn some useful vocabulary later. So, keep listening until the end.All right, let's get started. Okay, Leo, who are we blaming today?Oh, you want me to be the teacher today? All right, sure. Do you want to?Of course.Well, the one to blame here is dopamine. You know, the famous "happy chemical."Now you make our friends even more curious, Leo. Like, why should we blame something that makes us happy? To answer this question, we first have to look at how dopamine works. So how does dopamine work, teacher?Well, when we see something good, our brain makes dopamine. It tells your brain, "Hey, this looks fun. I like it. Let's try it."Good. For example, Leo sees a new drink at a cafe. He never tried it before, but it looks really tasty on the menu. So, his brain makes dopamine. And one second later, I'm telling the barista, "Hey, I want that new drink, please." Dopamine also comes after you do something good. Let's say Leo really loves that new drink. So next time he goes to that cafe, his brain makes dopamine again. It tells him to buy that drink again. So dopamine is like a helper. It shows us what makes us feel good.Exactly. Dopamine helps you. It's really good for you.So why do you say it's the one to blame? I'm sure our friends are thinking this right now.Good question. Dopamine is good if you get the right type, but if you get the wrong type, it can make your life worse.Right? There are two types: quick and slow. And the bad guy is quick dopamine.Yes. When we get too much dopamine too fast, we call it a "quick hit" of dopamine, or just quick hit for short. Think of it like a spark. It starts fast and ends fast and you get it very easily with almost no work. And social media is the king of quick hits.So true. Social media is full of fun things. Instagram reels, TikTok videos. Um, they're only 15 seconds long. That's shorter than my morning stretch. So, you get dopamine really, really fast.Exactly. Now, let's go back to the picture we talked about earlier. Dopamine makes you feel excited, so you can't stop scrolling. And before you know it, you fall into a cycle. One video, 10 videos, one hour gone, and it's hard to stop because you get distracted so easily. Every video is like a little treasure. Something new and fun.Watch out. That's the trap right there. Once you open it, things can go wrong really fast. Don't feel bad if you can't say no to social media. It's like chocolate. Sweet, tasty, and it makes you happy right away. It's hard to say no to chocolate, right?True. But it's not good for your health if you eat too much.Exactly. That's why we should go for the good type of dopamine. I heard studying can give you dopamine, too. The good type.Yes. But the problem is that studying English is like vegetables. It's good for you, but it's not exciting. And it takes time to make you feel good.Ha. That's why one minute of studying feels very hard. But one hour of scrolling feels like a party. So, what do we do? We go for the easy thing, right? Our brain usually goes for easy things. It's just how we work, a habit, but not a good one. If you've ever spent one hour scrolling TikTok instead of studying for 15 minutes, then give us a like to support us because we're about to help you change this habit.Yep, that's true. We can help you change that habit in only five steps. Let me say that again. Five simple and easy steps. Does your brain like that?We bet it does. Let's get right into it.Step 1: Reset Your BrainWhat's the first step, Gwen? The first thing you should do is to reset your brain. You need to make your brain feel peaceful again, right?Quick hits of dopamine make you feel excited all the time. The endless excitement gives you no rest and that's why you get tired. And when you're tired for a long time, you can't do anything well. So, the first thing you need to do is get your peace back. It will help your brain rest.Wait, does that mean I have to say goodbye to my phone? If this is your worry, the answer is yes, but also no. Yes, you have to put down your phone, but only for a short time. So, here is what you need to do every day for just 10 to 15 minutes: do nothing. No phone, no music, no TV, just sit.It might feel so boring, but that's how your brain gets rest and is really good for your brain, right? When your brain gets easy dopamine from TikTok all day, normal things feel boring. Reading one page of a book feels terrible. You will want to go back to your phone. So, without a phone in our hand, we have to look for interesting things around us. That's how we make learning a new English word exciting again. It's like when we're hungry, even bad food tastes good. That's the idea. So friends, remember: giving your brain a break is the first step. Now let's talk about when you have to do something like studying. How can we find it interesting enough to want to do it?Step 2: Make Things FunThat's our step two. Make things fun.Can you give us an example?Sure, Leo. When I say you must practice speaking, how do you feel? Uh, stressed like homework, right? That's because the word "study" creates stress in your brain, and stress is the enemy of fun.Agreed.Now, what if I say, "Let's pretend you are a character in a movie. Say the lines out loud."Huh? Now, that feels interesting. I feel like Brad Pitt. That's how this step works. You don't change what you do, you change how you see it. Same action, different feeling. This is really helpful. I am sure you all want to be good at English, but the act of studying the language often feels boring. That's when you need to be creative. Think of English like a treasure map. Every new word is a clue. When you understand the whole sentence, you found the treasure. Now you are not studying vocabulary anymore. You are hunting for treasures.Yeah, your brain loves games and adventures. If you think "I am on a treasure hunt," it feels exciting. If you think "I must memorize 50 words," it feels like a house chore.See how it works? I'm sure that once you get into the right vibe, even the hardest task becomes a fun game. So friends, note it down. Step two, make things fun.So when is learning English fun for you? When you sing your favorite English songs, even if you're singing the lyrics wrong? Or when you understand a joke in English? Tell us in the comments below. We'd love to know more about you and what's fun for you.

You sell secondhand stuff, right?Of course, my friend. Only secondhand, but good condition, good price. Everything you see, I got it from people who didn't need it anymore. Some even from offices that are closed. They are good quality products. Some of them were used by wealthy people. You can take a look.Interesting. Hey, that TV over there, it looks old. Does it still work? This one? Oh, yes, brother. It works perfectly. You'll see. That's a 32-inch plasma TV. Samsung from 2010. It's old, yes, but it works very well. The image is good. Great colors. HDMI port works. Remote control? Yes, included. Plus extra batteries.Interesting. And how much does it cost? I suppose not much.Look, this TV new costs $200 or $300. But for you, because you seem to be a smart guy, just give me $60.Come on, man. 60? It's from 2010. I can't give you 60 for that TV.Yes, but it's Korean quality, not like the new plastic stuff today. I'll tell you something. You take this home, plug it in. Boom. TV time. I can even show you. It works here. Portable battery. It's a great offer.Okay. Okay. Uh, let me think. What about that suit? That black one.Oh, that's a real suit, my friend. Fine wool. Italian brand. Very elegant. Look, feel it. It's a very elegant suit. You love it.Um, yeah. It looks nice. Looks like an important man.Oh, you're right. It belonged to a lawyer. He lost weight. Gave it to me. Still fresh. Only used twice, I think. No holes, no stains. It's perfect.Maybe. I think I like it. I can use it for work. How much?Well, this suit cost like $500 or $600 new, but for you—for you only $25, right? Cleaned, ready to wear. That's cheap. Um, and that PlayStation, are you selling it?Yes, of course. PlayStation 3. But uh... what about the suit?I have to think about it first. But PlayStation 3 looks like the five. It's a new design.I could lie to you, but I am very honest. It is the PS3 classic, brother. Retro for the real gamer. Real men love to play with that. It comes with two controllers and three games. The best games: FIFA 2014, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Call of Duty.Wow. I used to play those games many years ago. I'd love to play those again, but this time with my children. How much?Well, we're talking about the PS3, bro. You know, these things are not cheap.Just tell me. Oh, but first, does it work? How can you ask that? I tested it last night. Works perfectly. Seriously, good for kids, good for adults. It's not PS5, but it's still fun.Yeah, I see. But um... you haven't told me the price. How much is it?Well, this amazing game console with games and controllers... 70. $70.Too much. I can give you $50. That's all.$50? Come on, bro. The controllers alone are worth 30. Let's do 60. Final offer. You won't find it cheaper anywhere.Um, okay. I'll think. And those shoes, they look good.Leather shoes. Real leather, black, beautiful, made in Brazil, cleaned and polished. Size 43. I think that's your size. Lucky you. You're right. That's my size. And it looks great. Uh, how much?Perfect. Just $15. They are in excellent condition. Come on.Okay, that's a fair price. Oh, and those toys over there. I like them. For your kids, take them. Only $1 each. Very cheap. Some are McDonald's toys, others from Disney. They are in good condition.I'll take five of them. And the shoes and the TV for 50. Yes. Is that okay?Um, okay. Okay. Take the shoes, five toys, and the TV for 50. Deal.Deal. Let me get my wallet, but I will pick them up later in 5 minutes.Don't worry. I will be here all day. Great. First sale.Hey there. You sell secondhand things. I'm looking for something.Yes, sir. Vol269.日常英语对话Giving a Presentation

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Hello everyone and welcome to English Pod. My name is Marco. My name is Katherine. And today we've got another episode in our series about giving a presentation. That's right. Today we're going to talk about some key elements of the topic that we're talking about. We're talking about a laptop computer. So we're going to give some more details and characteristics about the computer and what makes it so special. So let's take a listen to what Mr. Ford has to say about what makes this company's computers very special.Mr. Ford: Now, a key question you might ask yourself is what differentiates the new X420 line with our previous models and also of course with some of our competitors. In other words, what makes the X420 stand out from all the others? This is a key question and is something I'd like to explore in a little depth.Firstly, the X420 has a range of USPs that really make it a cut above the rest. The first thing to mention is that the X420 is the first in a new generation of ultra-light laptop computers. It is only 2 lb, which compares very favorably with all our key competitors. In terms of computer performance, for such a light machine, it's very powerful. 4 GB of RAM with an ultra-fast processor. The most advanced video and sound cards on the market are installed with a crystal clear 15-inch LCD display. The X420 really stands out as a next-generation laptop. Compared with our previous X540 range, it really is in a league of its own. Now, if we go on to look at projected sales for the X420, we can see that sales revenue for 2010 is expected to hit at least $20 million. Now, this is really a conservative estimate. If our marketing campaign is successful, I'm confident that we could see a doubling of this figure at the very least. Now, please bear in mind that this is only for the first year of production. I'm certain that in the coming 3 years, the X420 will actually overtake all our existing products, both in terms of sales and revenue. Okay, now let's move on to discuss our marketing concept and look more closely at our key competitors. All right, we're back. So, we obviously heard a lot of vocab here, a lot of interesting things regarding the computer. Why don't we take a look at some of the words that he used onLanguage Takeaway? So, the first word that is pretty challenging is to differentiate. It's a verb. So, Mr. Ford says, "Ask yourself what it is that differentiates this new computer line with other ones."That's right. So to differentiate, that means what makes it different? What is so special about it? Right. That's right. So you can ask a question like this: What differentiates Apple computers from other computers? That's right. So you're asking what makes it so different? That's right. Okay. So then he rephrases the question and he says, "Well, in other words, what makes the X420 stand out from all the other computers?"All right, so this is a verbal phrase, to stand out. It's very similar to the one that we just mentioned, to differentiate. This means what makes this computer special? Why is it unique? That's right. So we're basically saying, why is this one more noticeable than the rest? That's to stand out. So maybe if everyone in the office is wearing white t-shirts today, but somebody comes in wearing a red t-shirt, that person is going to stand out.Actually, Marco, I think today that's you. You're wearing a red t-shirt today, so you stand out. Okay. So, uh, now as he continued to talk about the computer, he used this prefix before an adjective that was very interesting. He said, "This computer is ultra light." And then he said it's ultra thin as well. And that it has an ultra fast processor.Okay. So ultra light. Ultra fast. Ultra thin. This is a way of saying "very very."That's right. So that's what he's saying. He's saying it's very light. It's very thin. So that's pretty much the structure. You can add ultra before an adjective to emphasize that it's very something. That's right. So when I think of cool actors, I think of James Dean. He was ultra cool.Ultra cool. Very cool. That's right. Okay. So, you can do it with pretty much all adjectives, but uh you know, don't really... you can't really exaggerate and use it all the time. That's right. Well, the key is to remember this is an exaggeration. So, yeah, you don't want to use it all the time, but if you want to emphasize that something is special or that it's very very something, you use the word ultra. That's right. Okay. As he continued to talk about the characteristics of the laptop computer, he made reference to the LCD display, the screen of the computer, and he said that it's a crystal clear 15-inch LCD display. What does he mean by crystal clear?Well, crystal is a very special kind of glass, right? And so, it's expensive. It's what some people have as their special glassware, you know, wine glasses and drinking glasses. And so crystal is very special because it's so clear to see through. So transparent. It's transparent. Light goes through it. You can see everything. And so to say something is crystal clear is to say that it's very very clear.Uh it's extremely clear. It's as clear as crystal. Okay. So basically the screen of this computer, you can see very very well everything that's on the screen, everything that's happening. All the colors, all of the words.Mhm.Okay. And then moving away from the characteristics of the computer, he talked about projected sales and uh he expected $20 million. But he said that that is a very conservative estimate. Okay. So an estimate is like a guess. It's how much we think we will earn in a year or how much we think will happen. Um but in this case, a conservative estimate means that it's a low estimate. You know, we might make $20 million next year. That's conservative. Uh, another estimate is we will make $40 million. So that's not conservative. That's right. Okay. So as you said, an estimate is we are more or less guessing how much it would be. And conservative... so what would be the opposite of a conservative estimate? You could say a generous estimate. That means you're giving a lot.Okay.Uh, so a generous estimate is our revenues will be at around $60 million next year.Okay. Very good. So I think we've taken in a lot. Why don't we take a break? Let's listen to the dialogue again and we'll be back with Fluency Builder.[Presentation Clip Replay: Mr. Ford]Mr. Ford: Now, a key question you might ask yourself is what differentiates the new X420 line with our previous models and also of course with some of our competitors. In other words, what makes the X420 stand out from all the others? This is a key question and is something I'd like to explore in a little depth.

    Vol268.日常英语对话Why You Are Always Tired

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Welcome back to Pod Chill, everyone.Hi, friends. We're really happy you're here with us today. Leo, before we start, can I ask you real quick?Of course, Gwen. How are you feeling today?Honestly, I've been tired lately. I wake up feeling drained, and even sleep doesn't really help. Wait, am I getting old already?Yeah, Leo, you're definitely old. Just kidding. But you know what? That's a feeling many adults quietly live with.Really? People like us?Yeah, but many people think it's just normal. But is it really normal to feel tired every day? What do you think, Leo?I also wonder if it's normal to be tired all the time. That's what we want to talk about today. Why you're always tired even when you do nothing. And we'll also show you gentle ways to help the body recover. Please like and follow Pod Chill if this space feels good to you.And stay until the end because we'll learn some simple vocabulary together. Now, let's sit down, breathe a little, and start.Part 1: Why We Feel TiredHey, Leo. The first reason behind this tired feeling is actually connected to something you really love. You know what it is?That sounds dangerous. Let me guess. Wait, are you talking about coffee?Bingo. That's coffee. But why? Coffee feels like the start button of the day.Yeah, coffee helps you feel awake. But when you use it the wrong way, it can do the opposite.Oh, how? When do you usually drink your first cup?Right after I wake up. It's like my daily medicine. But there's something you might not know. Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can actually make you feel more tired.Really? But I feel energized when I drink it.That kind of energy isn't very steady. At first, caffeine gives you energy, but it fades quickly.Oh, that makes sense now. Later on, I can't focus and my body feels heavy again. And when that tired feeling came back, my solution was drinking more coffee—sometimes even in the afternoon because I just wanted to feel normal again. At first, it felt helpful, but having coffee too late in the day can quietly create another problem. Not because coffee is bad, but because caffeine can stay in your body longer than you think.Oh, right. Coffee after the afternoon can make it harder to fall into deep sleep. I used to think it is okay. I can still fall asleep at night. But falling asleep is not the same as sleeping well.Exactly. That's what we call poor sleep quality. It's when you sleep too little or even sleep a lot, but the sleep isn't deep. It's like we don't really feel rested, right?Yep. Many people sleep for enough hours, but they still feel tired the next day. That sounds exactly like me. I wake up in the morning and I already feel tired even before the day starts. One reason can be the way we breathe while sleeping. Breathing through the mouth seems small, but it can keep the body tense. That explains why my mouth is dry and my head feels heavy when I wake up. I thought everyone did that.Another habit that hurts sleep quality is using the snooze button.Oh, right. The button on our phone alarm. Each time you press it, the alarm stops, rings again, and breaks your sleep.I press it every morning like it is a habit. And instead of resting, my brain feels slow and unclear. So even if you sleep eight hours, your body may not fully recover. The sleep looks long, but the quality is missing. My dear friends, how many hours do you usually sleep?Feel free to share. I'd really love to know. Now coming back to my mornings for a moment. When I finally get out of bed, I tell myself, "Okay, today will be better." But then I make the same mistake again.Let me guess, your phone is the first thing you pick up in the morning.Yeah. Every day before my feet even touch the floor, I am already scrolling. Messages, news, videos, random posts I do not even remember later. That kind of start looks active, but it actually makes you more tired. After you wake up, your brain gives you a quick positive feeling. It feels exciting for a short time. Like my brain is awake even if my body is not.But that rise happens too fast. And when it drops, your energy drops too. That's why my head feels slow. I'm awake but my mind is not clear. I sit there looking at my screen feeling tired and unable to focus. Many people call that brain fog. Your mind feels busy but your thinking is slow. And it feels bad because the day has not even started yet. I have not worked. I have not moved but I already feel mentally tired. That's why the way you start your day matters so much. It decides if you feel tired or energetic all day. There's one more area we should talk about because it often gets ignored.Tell us, Gwen. Not drinking enough water can make you feel tired without you noticing. Many adults walk around all day slightly dehydrated and don't realize it. The body then feels slow, heavy, and easily drained. That word again, "drained." It fits perfectly. I don't feel sick, just empty, like my battery is low.Exactly. Coffee and tea don't fully replace water. Your body still needs plain water to work well. That's true.Quick check-in for everyone listening. How much water do you usually drink in a day?Be honest with yourself. You can drop your answer in the comments and stay until the end because we'll share what enough really looks like.Let's continue. The way you spend your evenings also plays a bigger role than you think.Oh, how?Blue light from phones and screens keeps your brain active at night. Even when your body is tired, your mind stays awake.I tell myself I am relaxing, but my eyes hurt and I keep thinking too much. That doesn't feel like rest at all. What you eat at night can add to this problem. A big meal close to bedtime makes your body work when it should be resting.Even after a full night's rest, we can still feel tired in the morning. These habits don't feel serious in the moment, but over time they quietly wear out your energy.I agree.Part 2: The SolutionsAfter hearing all of this, it can feel a bit heavy. But this part is not about blaming yourself. It's about small changes that actually help. Let's move into solutions that fit real life. Finally, the hopeful chapter. My favorite kind. We'll start with caffeine since it's part of many mornings. Coffee isn't the enemy.I'm relieved to hear that. I was afraid you'd tell me to break up with coffee. Not at all. It's about using caffeine in a smarter way. First, have a light breakfast, then wait a bit before your morning coffee. Let your body wake up before you push it.I notice that when I wait, my coffee feels stronger but calmer. I don't feel rushed anymore.Yep. Another habit is to cut back on caffeine in the afternoon. Late coffee can quietly hurt your sleep. That was painful at first, but your nights will become deeper. And deeper sleep helps your body recover. One more simple tip is to pair coffee with some fat or food. It helps keep your energy steady. That stopped the crash for me. I don't feel worn out so quickly anymore. All right. Using caffeine in a better way helps, but it cannot fix everything by itself. If your sleep is still poor, the tired feeling will return.Yeah, I learned that the hard way. Even when I cut back on coffee, bad sleep still ruined my next day.So, let us talk about sleep quality. Not in a strict way, but in a gentle way.Gentle sleep rules sound good. Our body needs support, not pressure. One easy place to start is breathing. Breathing through your nose while sleeping helps the body feel calm and safe. Friends, when you try that, you will wake up more relaxed. I did, and my chest did not feel tight anymore.Give it a go, my friends. Another habit that matters is the snooze button. Pressing snooze breaks your sleep into small parts. I thought I was getting more rest, but I was actually making my brain confused every morning. Waking up at the same time each day helps your body feel steady. Going to bed and waking up at similar times creates a routine.Keeping a steady schedule in the morning can make starting the day calmer. The mind has space to wake up slowly without rushing.Exactly. It helps the brain wake up little by little. When sleep is steady, energy comes more easily during the day. That might be why some mornings feel lighter than others. And the bedroom also matters, right?True. A dark, cool, and quiet room tells your body it is time to rest.Even small lights or noise can make it hard to relax. A cool room helps the body feel comfortable and calm.Exactly. It's like telling the body, "Now it's time to rest."Try changing the lights and opening the window a little. It will feel like your room is helping you sleep. And one last thing many of us find hard: using phones or devices right before bed. That was the hardest habit for me to stop. But when I stopped, my mind slowed down faster. These small changes do not need to be perfect. They simply help your body rest and recover during the night. You know what surprised me the most? What's that?Even on days when I used coffee the right way, I still felt tired. That is when I understood the problem was not only daytime energy. It was about what happened during the night. That is an important thing to notice. Sleep is where energy is built again, not taken from later.Yeah, daytime habits feel obvious, but sleep works quietly. When sleep is weak, nothing else really feels okay.So instead of pushing yourself to sleep better, we can start with something very simple like our breathing. I never thought breathing mattered at night.Breathing through your nose helps your body stay calm. It helps your body stay more relaxed. It is a small change, but it helps a lot. That's cool.None of these are hard rules. They gently help your body return to real rest. After I improved my nights a little, I noticed something interesting. Mornings felt more open, like starting fresh again. That is a good time to add two very simple things. Water and sunlight. They sound almost too simple. Like advice we have heard since we were kids. That is true. But simple things work well when we actually do them. Starting with the first habit, which was easy but not very comfortable. That's drinking water right after waking up.Well, your body loses water while you sleep. So, starting the day with water helps your body wake up slowly. Many people ask how much water we really need. Can you share, Gwen?A simple rule is about 2 to 2.5 Liters a day for most adults.Hearing that made me realize I was drinking much less. How about you, my friends?Yes, think about your own day. Do you drink enough or maybe too much? You can share your number in the comments and later you can check if your habit fits what your body needs. Now, let us go outside for a moment. Morning sunlight tells your body it is time to wake up. I started taking short walks in the morning. That light also helps my body get ready for sleep later. It supports your natural daily rhythm. That surprised me. Being in the sun in the morning helped me sleep better at night.Water and sunlight do not feel dramatic, but together they quietly help your energy last through the day.So friends, even little changes like these can make a big difference over time. They contribute to making your day bright and fresh.Part 3: Vocabulary & Wrap UpOkay, let's pause the deep talk for a moment. This feels like a good time to breathe together.Yes, a short break. Not to stop learning, but to let the body catch up. If you're listening right now, don't forget to support Pod Chill. Please like and follow the channel if this space feels kind to you, and subscribe if you want more calm talks like this in your day. We'll be here talking, reflecting, and chilling together. Before we continue, let's do something simple. Take a sip of water if you can.If you're able to move, maybe stand up for a second, stretch your arms, roll your shoulders, relax your neck. You can even take a short walk if you're listening on the go. Let your mind loosen a little. Now that we've slowed down, let's learn some vocabulary together. Nothing stressful, just words you already heard in today's story. We'll explain them in a simple way, like friends helping friends. I'll start with the word Drained.Drained means you feel very tired, like your energy is empty. Not sick, just low, like a phone with 1% battery. That word described me perfectly earlier. I wasn't busy, but I still felt drained inside. The next word is Steady.Steady means calm and stable. Not going up and down too fast, like energy that stays with you instead of crashing. That's a great word for healthy energy. Yep. And now is your turn. All right. The third word is Recover. Recover means your body or mind gets better after rest. Sleep helps us recover from the day.I like that word. It reminds me that rest is not lazy. It's healing. The next word is Cut back. It's your turn to explain it, Leo.Well, Cut back means to do something less than before. Like cutting back on afternoon coffee. And the last word is Wear out. Wear out means something becomes tired or weak after too much use. Bad habits can wear out our energy over time. That one really hits because I didn't feel broken, just slowly worn out. These words are simple, but they describe real feelings. Feelings many adults live with every day. And now you have words to name them. Sometimes naming a feeling already helps it feel lighter. Before we finish, I just want to say this. You do not need big changes to feel better. Small habits are easier to keep. And small habits are often the ones that stay. A glass of water, a calmer night, a gentler morning. Those small things do not look special, but they give you energy that lasts longer. When your energy is more even, your mind does not have to work so hard. You are not tired all the time anymore. That is when it feels easier to focus and easier to learn. Just keep listening and keep taking care of yourself. Thanks for spending time with us today. This space is always here for you.We will see you again soon on Pod Chill. This is your friend Gwen. And I'm Leo. See you again.

Vol267.How to Learn English in 2026

获取全部文本资料公众号搜索:yymaster888Good morning, teacher. Can I ask you something? Honestly, I've been trying to learn English for years, but I always feel stuck. Now, it's 2026 and I don't know what really works anymore. There are so many apps, videos, AI tools, and courses. I feel lost. That's a very honest question, and I'm glad you asked it. The truth is, learning English in 2026 is very different. It is very different from learning English 10 years ago, James. And I'll tell you why. We have more tools, more information, and more opportunities than ever before. That's the truth. But at the same time, we also have more distractions, more confusion, and of course, we also have more pressure. So the key today is not learning more, but learning smarter.Stop "Studying" EnglishSo the first thing you have to do is stop studying English. What? What do you mean by stop studying English?I don't mean stop learning. I mean, stop treating English like a school subject. In 2026, English is not something you study for exams. It's a tool you use to live, work, and connect with the world. Many students still spend hours memorizing grammar rules, but they never use English in real situations. That's why they feel stuck. What works now is daily use, even if it's imperfect. Listening to short conversations, watching videos about real life, reading comments, sending messages, or speaking to yourself in English.I mean, five to 10 minutes of real use every day is better. It is much better than one hour of boring study once a week.Use AI CarefullyThe other thing you have to do is use technology, but don't depend on it.There are so many AI tools now. Should I use them?Yes, but carefully. In 2026, AI is a powerful assistant, not a teacher. Many students make the mistake of letting AI do everything for them: translations, writing, speaking, everything that feels comfortable. But it doesn't help your brain learn. The smart way is to use technology to support, not replace your thinking. For example, you can ask AI to explain a phrase, correct your sentence, or give you examples, but then you should repeat it, say it out loud, and try to use it in your own words. English grows when you do the work, not when a machine does it for you.Learn From People, Not TextbooksWhat else? Oh, learn English from people, not from textbooks. I mean, textbooks are not bad, but they are not enough. In 2026, real English comes from real people: from conversations, podcasts, interviews, stories, and daily life situations. Textbooks often teach perfect sentences that nobody actually uses in real life. That's why I always recommend learning from conversations. Conversations about family, work, money, relationships, problems, and emotions. When you hear how people really speak, you start to understand rhythm, tone, and natural expressions. It helps a lot. This is what makes your English sound human, not robotic.Connect English to Your LifeOh, also learn English for your life, not for English. Many learners ask, "How do I learn English?" A better question is: "What do I want to do in English in 2026?"English should be connected to your life, your job, your goals, your problems, your interests. If you like business, learn English through business conversations. If you like family topics, learn through family stories. When English is connected to something you care about, your brain remembers it faster and longer. Believe me.
