VS heft sancties op: feest in Syrië & Trumps aanval op persvrijheid

In Syrië klonken dinsdagavond vuurwerk en gejuich, toen Donald Trump aankondigde dat de VS alle sancties tegen het land opheft. Volgens de Amerikaanse president is het nu tijd voor Syrië om verder te gaan en wil hij het land kans geven om ''groots'' te worden. Daarmee lijkt er een cruciale fase aangebroken voor Syrië. Mohammad Kanfash is Syrië-onderzoeker verbonden aan de Universiteit Utrecht. (10:39) Trumps aanval op de persvrijheid in de VS “Fake News!” – het klonk vrijwel dagelijks, in hoofdletters en met uitroeptekens, vanuit het Witte Huis tijdens Trumps eerste termijn. In zijn tweede termijn zet de Amerikaanse president zijn aanval op de media voort, met kostbare rechtszaken, plannen om de publieke omroep financieel droog te leggen en voorkeursbehandelingen voor pro-Trump media.
