Sinds Erdogan aan de macht is leek hij eerst een prowesterse en seculier beleid te gaan vormen. Vanaf 2012 veranderde dat langzamerhand in een meer repressief bewind. Op dit moment komen zo veel vrijheden in het gedrang dat veel hoogopgeleide Turken besluiten te vertrekken. De torenhoge inflatie in Turkije is een andere, economische reden. De Turken die deze kant op komen worden leidinggevenden bij grote internationale bedrijven in Duitsland en in Nederland. Turkije verandert daarmee van leverancier van arbeidsmigranten naar leverancier van kennismigranten.Froukje Santing heeft zelf lang in Turkije gewoond en is daar ook correspondent geweest voor de NRC en NPO Radio 1. Samen met Floris Vermeulen schreef ze voor De Groene een artikel over de Turkse expats. Nadat in de vorige eeuw veel Turkse mensen als arbeidsmigrant naar Nederland zijn gekomen, zien we nu in een migratiegolf van kennismigranten.
