Un 12 de junio de 1942 fallecía el compositor inglés Walter Leigh. Leigh nació en Wimbledon. Su primer maestro fue Harold Darke, con quien trabajó desde los ocho años hasta los diecisiete. Fue al Christ's College de Cambridge, donde estudió composición con Cyril Rootham y luego estudió con Paul Hindemith en Berlín. En 1930, Leigh rechazó un trabajo docente y comenzó a ganarse la vida aceptando pequeños encargos e involucrándose cada vez más en el teatro. Escribió una pantomima para el Festival Theatre de Cambridge y dos óperas cómicas, la segunda de las cuales, "Jolly Roger", se presentó durante seis meses en el Savoy Theatre de Londres. Compuso la obertura de concierto "Agincourt", encargada por la BBC en celebración del Jubileo de Plata del Rey Jorge V. Su obra más conocida, el "Clavicordio Concertino", es una de varias obras de cámara de la época. En 1941, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se unió al ejército británico y sirvió como soldado en el Royal Armored Corps, 4th Queen's Own Hussars. Murió en combate cerca de Tobruk, Libia, en 1942, justo antes de cumplir 37 años.
