Gay's five-field-goal day included kicks from 31, 53, 53, 53 and 54. Browns defense is off to a historical start. - The Browns have only surrendered 491 yards through three games, which is the fewest amount of yards that any team has surrendered through three games since 1999 when the Buccaneers held their first three opponents to 430 total yards. Trivia Answer – The all-time record for points by a team in an NFL game is the 1940 Chicago Bears, who, in the NFL Championship game, annihilated Washington 73-0. The Bears had lost to Washington in the regular season 7-3 three weeks earlier. Afterward, Washington’s owner, George Preston Marshall, said the Bears were quitters and crybabies…which may have fired the Bears up a bit. For the Bonus College Record - The college record is Georgia Tech, who went Thanos on Cumberland College, beating them (and I am not making this up) 222-0 in 1916. The story of the game is as crazy as the score... Cumberland, who had disbanded their team the year before, was stuck in a contract to play Georgia Tech and tried to cancel the game. But, John Heisman, Georgia Tech’s coach, was furious that year before the Cumberland’s baseball team had beaten his (he was the baseball, basketball, and football coach at Tech) the year before 22-0, using what he thought were professional players, and wanted revenge. He threatened legal action (he was also a lawyer and actor!) and even offered to pay Cumberland to come…all to get his revenge. Forced to play, Cumberland asked a student, George Allen (who would eventually be President Truman's confidant in the White House and Democratic National Committee Chair), to put together a team and save the school the $3000 (over 100K today) it would have to pay. He recruited his fraternity members and fellow law students and went to Atlanta to place the eventual league champions and national runners-up. To say it went poorly was an understatement. Sportswriter Grantland Rice wrote, "Cumberland's greatest individual play of the game occurred when fullback Allen circled right end for a 6-yard loss." Cumberland never even got a first down. Georgia Tech scored 32 touchdowns and scored on every possession. At halftime, up 126-0, Heisman reportedly told his players, "You're doing all right, team, we're ahead. But you just can't tell what those Cumberland players have up their sleeves. They may spring a surprise. Be alert, men! Hit 'em clean, but hit 'em hard!" Ah, sportsmanship... Heisman eventually called off the dogs, agreeing to reduce the time of the game by 6 minutes, but he and Georgia Tech had their revenge and a record that will never be broken. Cumberland eventually reformed their football team and plays today in Division III, where they are still known as a baseball power. As for Heisman, he would win the national championship the next year, and when he died in 1936, the New York Athletic Club named a certain trophy after him…
