Week 25 - MAXELL XL3 - old school

from WeeklyBeats.com - Music RSS Feed · host MAXELL XL3

Sometimes I don’t think sampling is the right way to do justice to music that I truly love. I prefer to let it flow as the musicians originally intended, in its complete and unaltered form. Of course, it is not my music, and I have to respect that. In this case, I worked with a rehearsal recording by Zyma, a German psychedelic jazz-krautrock band from the 1970s. My friend Günther gave me a collection of their old tapes, which had been lying forgotten in his basement and slowly deteriorating for almost fifty years. The tape – and especially this track – turned out to be a real treasure. I invested a great deal of time and effort into restoring the recording and bringing it back to life. These were merely rehearsal jams by Zyma and were never intended for release. Nevertheless, I fell in love with this piece. To create an atmosphere that gently draws the listener into the music, I added some subtle, Pink Floyd–esque ambient textures at the beginning. From there, the track unfolds and develops in a direction quite different from where it originally started. I am proud to have helped preserve and revive a wonderful piece of music created by a group of fascinating musicians from my hometown. 2026 CC Attribution Noncommercial No Derivative Works (BY-NC-ND)
