Week 41 - laguna - OhMyR8!!!

from WeeklyBeats.com - Music RSS Feed · host laguna

I didn't knew much about Aphex Twin early composition process. After I watched some reconstructions of his tracks using the Roland R8 (using the "electronic" sound card) I started craving for a new drum machine, basically because it looks cool and there are somewhat affordable R5s and R8s on the second hand market. In fact, I didn't knew it was so important for all WARP's "Artificial Intelligence" compilation era. Well, this is me proving myself that I just need to take the sound palette and forget about some new gear I don't have space or available connections to plug. Just two instruments on Renoise: my recreation of the (somewhat limited) 808 part of the R8's electronic kit and a floaty pad from a Jungle compilation, heavily filtered. One internal multitap delay in one send and TAL Reverb 4 on the other, as my personal Alesis Quadraverb. No mastering, just some soft channel strip / compressor added in the last minute to elevate the levels. It is not perfect, and I run out of time to add some more elements or find a substitute for that pitched down clave (as the annoying "water drop"), though overall I think it sounds 90s enough :) Looking forward to hear your stuff (slowly catching up)...
