Maybe you are on a crowded subway, maybe in a busy living room, or perhaps, if you are lucky, you are in a room with the door closed. In our modern lives, we often feel that our time and our space are not truly our own. We are constantly interrupted—by notifications, by demands from others, by the noise of the world. We carve out tiny slices of time to be ourselves, but often, it feels like stealing.This feeling of having no space, no silence, is what brings us to tonight’s masterpiece: A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf. Although she wrote this in 1929, speaking specifically to women, her message resonates with anyone who struggles to find the freedom to create, to think, or simply to be.Before we listen to Woolf’s piercing voice, let’s hold a few words in our minds. The first is Material. Woolf argues that intellectual freedom depends on material things—money and space. It’s a hard truth. The second is a beautiful word: Incandescent. It means glowing with heat and light. Woolf believed that to create great art, the mind must be incandescent—free from hatred, bitterness, or fear. It must be Unimpeded—not blocked by the world.Now, imagine Virginia Woolf standing at a podium, her voice sharp yet poetic. She is explaining why genius is not just about talent, but about the opportunity to let that talent grow. Let’s listen to her argument for the necessity of independence."Intellectual freedom depends upon material things. Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom. And women have always been poor, not for two hundred years merely, but from the beginning of time. Women have had less intellectual freedom than the sons of Athenian slaves.
